The food was ordinary at best. The prices quite high. Overall , not a great experience. There are much better "french" restaurants in Phoenix

Tried this restaurant for a late anniversary dinner. The food was delicious. Be sure to try the cheese plate, the d'affinois double-cream cheese was the best thing about the whole meal. Ambience and decor were good, although the setting sun kept shining right onto my face. The wait staff kindly moved us over and taped a square of cloth over the window for good measure. The wine list was extensive. As we have no expertise with wine, we went with the waiter's recommendation (one of the less expensive bottles).

I visited Sophie's last night with some friends from Denver. They enjoy good food, and I hadn't been there in a while, but I wasn't disappointed! The appetizers of escargot was exactly as I had remembered (both in Paris and at Sophie's from previous visits) and the onion tarte was divine! The Beef Bourguignon was delicious, and the house specialty of Duck Confit Cassoulet perfect! Our waiter, Thomas, was very helpful - friendly and professional. We sat on the patio, enjoying every minute of our friends' last night in Phoenix. Sure, with the kids we usually eat at a chain - so we know what to expect - but whether you are visiting Phoenix and are tired of Southwest fare, or you live here in the Valley of the Sun, Sophie's is a hidden gem in Central Phoenix. The first thing our friends said this morning was "The food last night was excellent!"

Aside from the glowing reviews entered on Tripadvisor, I must point out one glaring shortfall, our entrees cooled off very fast. One of the many things that separates an excellent restaurant from a average one is the overall experience of enjoying the meal. Our entrees were served hot but on unheated plates which in turn robbed the meal of its heat. Many do not understand that heat transfer takes place very fast. Half way through our meal, the food was just maybe warmish at best. AND that changes the taste and the enjoyment of the meal. My suggestion to SOPHIES: First serve the salads on a cold plate. Second: HEAT the plates before placing the HOT entree on it. This way the food will remain hot throughout the meal. To avoid matters like this, I will now make all future reservations at any restaurant asking, are the entrees served on hot plates? Then noted the name of the person I spoke to confirming this. We are tired of restaurants, with great reviews, that really do not care enough to serve their $29+ entrees on hot plates. If they cannot show pride in their cooking skills, then there are other places to experience. For future reviewers, please note if this issue has been addressed as I would like to try Sophies again.

Hidden in a residential bungalow on a busy street in downtown, this little gem of a French bistro has been our favorite for years -- a best kept secret. French owner and several french waiters, perfectly prepared french food, cozy ambience with hard wood floors, lace curtains, art filled walls, and a lovely wooden bar in the front room -- a favorite with well-heeled locals that never disappoints. The food never disappoints and the service is perfectly polished and as warm and friendly as it gets.
