“Beautiful hotel”
Reviewed 13 October 2009

We visited Arizona at the end of August with our 2 young kids (both under 10) and stayed at this hotel. We visited without our children last summer for a long wknd so this was a repeat visit. While it was exceedingly hot (as we knew it would be), the pool at the hotel was a really fun and relaxing place to hang out with the kids. The rooms are large and very clean. We had a great patio with a beautiful view of the mountains. There were not a lot kids around but the hotel is really more geared toward an adult demographic. That having been said, the service was terrific, the terrain beautiful, and the pools lovely. One last word - the gym is great was well.

We travelled in August and looking back we did have a great time. It is a very relaxing resort - beautifully landscaped, great pool area and some attentive staff. As it was so hot all we could manage to do was collapse by the pool all day and it was perfect for that.

As someone else has mentioned they just cannot do enough for children. My son was given a cuddly horse and cookies with his name piped on them when he arrived - that is enough to get his loyalty forever!

However we did have problems. Our room was supposed to be some form of upgraded room but it was the same as the normal room - just 3 flights of stairs up and facing a rockface. I would prefer a lower floor and a nice view over Scottsdale - but maybe that's just me. It was not worth the extra.

We had also booked 2 rooms well in advance, the resort was not full but our rooms were a fair way apart. I spent a lot of time running between the two as we had shared bags and it was not convenient. They must have initially been even further apart as they were changed when we arrived. I'm sure we could have been in the same block if they had tried harder.

One room was a disabled room for some reason and it wasn't very nice - the bathroom was open plan with an old-fashioned shower curtain round the shower and the toilet was not partitioned off. There were also emergency pulls everywhere - nice if you need help but a bit off-putting if you don't.

There was also a faulty metal inspection hatch in the dressing room ceiling that fell out when the doors were opened. It had been repaired before badly. We called reception and they sent someone to repair it. It was bodged again and fell out again. By this time we were getting upset and angry - it was really dangerous and it was only luck it hadn't hit someone as they would have been badly injured. It was only on the next attempt did they do it properly - not what I expected from a 5* hotel. I would have thought it would have been checked regularly and certainly not repaired in the bad way it had been.

In addition we arrived back one night and found a scorpion on our bathroom floor. Not their fault and they sent someone up to deal with it but it had obviously hitched a ride up on the towels. They said they would change all our towels and mats that night - but no one came back to do this despite us waiting up just in case.

The turndown service was again intermittent - some days one room had it and the other didn't. Some days neither. The parking was a joke - the valet was expensive but the self-park was a walk away. As it was so hot and there was so much space I wouldn't have though some free nearby parking would have hurt when they designed the resort. Also the internet access was expensive - the last Four Seasons we went to it was free. Not very consistent.

All in all I was getting pretty unhappy with it all and spoke to the customer manager lady the day before we left. She was very good and made some adjustments to our bill for us. But it didn't really compensate for the stress it had all caused.

Oh and one final point - it was our honeymoon, they knew this and we got no free upgrade, presents, champagne - NOTHING - despite what other reviews have said. It was never mentioned to us and they certainly did not make us feel special.

It is not always easy to travel with a toddler, but Four Seasons allows parents to enjoy great service and beautiful surroundings without feeling like pariahs for bringing the kids along. Four Seasons at Troon provided two adorable cribs for my daughter - one for my room and one for her grandparents so her dad and I could enjoy a date one night. The kids club had tons of fun toys and everyone at the resort made a point of making my daughter feel at home. The pools were clean, the food was good and the rooms were gorgeous. The only negative was that room service frequently botched our breakfasts, but they always made it right in the end. Highly recommend.

nothing beats the four seasons. they never miss a beat. they are by far the most well run luxury hotel in the business. From having the linens you requested to the most spotless elegant room, staff and service. They have never faltered no matter which property we stay at. they go above and beyond for kids too. kids feel super special and they have every kid sized amenity and always know your kids names and likes and dislikes.

This trip consisted of me, my 2 girls ages 4 and 7, and my friend and her boys, ages 4 and 7. We each stayed in a studio on the timeshare part of the resort.

The resort was amazing. We can not wait to go back next year. The room was clean and absolutely beautiful. The toiletries were luxurious.

The gym was amazing. They provided headphones and each piece of cardio equipment had a personal TV. There were towels and water and a beautiful locker room.

The kids club was awesome. The kids couldn't wait to go every day. They had Wii, XBox 360, a pool table, foosball, ping pong, and tons of games.

The pool areas were amazing as well. As soon as you stepped in, a pool attendant would ask how many, where you would like to sit, and then set up what I refer to as "your bed". They place a fitted towel over the lounge cushion and make a towel into a pillow. They bring a pitcher of water with fruit slices and cups. Every hour, they bring out a special treat. Once it was Edy's Dibs, another time fresh fruit skewers.

Staff everywhere was wonderful. You couldn't open a door for yourself. Even the little ones enjoyed themselves immensely. They couldn't decide if they liked it here or at Disney better. Now that's saying something.

We will definitely be back.

Our family makes an annual visit to the greater Phoenix area. We used to stay at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, but have now become hooked on the Four Seasons. The location is further north than the "main drag" of Scottsdale, but the extra drive is worth is for this quite and serene location. We will continue to return.

Pluses:
Nice accommodations
Great for families - our son begs to go to their Kids' Club
Wonderful and attentive staff

Minuses:
The pool deck needs some serious renovating (concrete and tile crumbling); and a better routine for keeping it clean. The attentive pool staff serves lots of treats to guests (ice cream, fresh fruit, smoothies, etc). As a result, some guests can't seem to keep them out of the pool. There is always "stuff" just all over the place. Cups floating in the water -- yuck!

Bonus:
This trip we found a scorpion crawling around in a light fixture in the bathroom, but the staff was there immmediately to remove it.
