We all have to expand our horizons. When you're tied to Marriott because you're a member of their rewards program - you tend to go Marriott. We had a chance to stay at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa! I was impressed with the curb appeal when driving up to the resort. It looked and felt relaxing even before entering the resort. The amenities including a golf course, spa, restaurants and the daily activities would keep you on site for a relaxing getaway vacation (had a facial and participated in a yoga class). The extra added bonus is the easy access to 2 shopping areas within walking distance, Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter plus the iPic movie theater.

We have come to this resort for the last three years but I am sad to say this likely will be our last. Starting with Easter when the resort allowed hundreds of non guests to participate in the children's Easter egg hunts, so many that the staff couldn't control the event) and the lines for face painting and petting zoo were in excess of an hour. After brunch we attempted to relax at pool only to find that the staff failed to monitor the fact that all the non-guests were entering the pool. This resulted in no chairs being available on the property, people laying their towels on the cement, and dozens of families walking around waiting for seats. It was so bad that we witnessed two arguments where people were fighting over who saw chairs being vacated first.

The rest of the week consisted of families lining up an hour before the pool opened to stake out their claim. Once they did, they would leave their stuff on chairs and then come back later in the day. Therefore, unless you were prepared to arrive at the pool at 9, good luck getting a seat later in the day.

The resort did have a sign telling guests that possessions on unattended chairs would be removed after 45 minutes but that policy simply was not enforced. Instead the policy should be no saving chairs, period.

At the end of the day when you are spending $600+ per day to stay at the resort, you don't want your experience to be akin to going to your local public pool on a hot summer day.

Dear Jason,
Thank you very much for your feedback and for taking the time to write us and share the details of what you have experienced during your stay. We really appreciate the fact you have come back for three years now and it because of guests like you that this event has become so successful. We take all guest communication very seriously and greatly appreciate receiving detailed comments such as yours so that management is aware, our staff is informed, and we may resolve any and all issues as soon as possible.

We have a very strict wristband policy in place to ensure that only registered resort guests have access. In addition as you mentioned there are strict protocols in place as well regarding the saving of chairs and leaving chairs unattended. Please be assured, your comments have been passed on to our pool management team and they will be looking into the challenges you described.

The Easter Egg-Stravaganza is our biggest holiday event of the year and we spend many months planning to ensure our guests have a great time. We are very aware and disappointed by some challenges we encountered for the first time as you pointed out. The popularity of our event has grown significantly over time and although we were prepared for the amount of people, we were not prepared for the behavior of some participants. Unfortunately, we realize it deeply affected the experience for you. Please know we are taking a very close look at changes we can make for next year in order to preserve your guest experience and will work hard to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Please reach out to us directly at tripadvisor@kierlandresort.com with your reservation details so a member of our management team can follow up with you. Thank you again for coming back to spend the Easter Holiday and Spring Break with us and we hope you’ll give us another chance and join us again next year.

The resort is beautiful, employees all helpful and friendly. Spa employees are welcoming and make you feel relaxed. Food delicious. Room very comfortable, bathroom perfect.
Best surprise ever-- I left a bag at the hotel. It had my iPad, kindle and a variety of other important items. I called them as soon as I got off the plane. They had the bag and because my husband is a Starwood preferred member, they mailed the bag to me for free. All items were in the bag. Both John and Lucas were so helpful!
We will return to the hotel on our next trip. Our daughters will be staying there this coming wkend!
Thank you to Kierland.

My family of 5 stayed here for 2 nights to start our spring break trip. I am a platinum starwood member, and the staff graciously upgraded our family to a parlor suite. When I made reservations, I could only get one room with points so this upgrade was greatly appreciated! My kids loved the 9th floor concierge lounge (complimentary for platinum members)! Decent continental breakfast in the lounge each morning, and snacks/drinks available throughout the day. We also got a $50 platinum gift card each day to use in the Deseo lounge. Flow rider was a cool new ride the hotel recently added out by the pool. Cost is $30/hour + $15 registration fee. Lazy river was really nice, had nice views as you slowly made your way around. Water slide was pretty small, and not that fast (more for little kids). Service around the pool was very good. Waiter made a mistake on my wife's lunch order one day, but comped the meal and apologized for his mistake (pool was packed with people that day). Free self parking available.

My family and I celebrated Easter at the Westin Kierland Resort. The food was very good, service very good and admosdphere great. Sushi was freshly made and tasty, all the varieties of cheeses, three different types of smoked salmon, crableggs, shrimp, mussels, delicious. Prime rib and lamb was tasty but wasn't hot, iit was almost cold.
My only complaint was the egg hunt for the children, pet zoo. I understood the way the lady in the phone explained to me it was only for the children that came for the Easter buffet. Surprise, lots and lots of people showed up, no place to move, organished confussion. For the little people it should be divided into 2 groups, 2 and 3 years old and 4 to 5 or 6 for the other group.. The people they didn't come for the brunch should come later.I felt for people paying for the brunch should get different treatment. The good food covered for the confussion.

The resort staff was incredibly friendly and helpful - especially the coffee shop staff and housekeeping. The grounds are lovely. Depending on the location of your room, you could have quite a walk to the pools, dining, the conference center, and so on. Depending on why you are at the resort and what you plan to spend your time doing you may want to share this at check in and hopefully receive a convenient room location. While I have stayed in better Westin rooms, the rooms are up to Westin standards. Food and drinks onsite are good, but service was incredibly slow. Loved the pool areas. Especially loved that there is an adult only pool that is open 24 hours. There is a hotel shuttle that will take you to Kierland Commons which is handy. The hotel is also a very short walk to plenty of shopping and dining.

I stayed here in the last week of March as part of a large software conference being held at the hotel. I arrived before pretty much anyone else, and was allocated a room up on the 10th floor which, at first glance, was great. However, it had an interconnecting door and I won't stay in rooms with interconnecting doors - the noise tranmission from the maid cleaning the room next door was pretty bad. So, I asked to be moved and sure enough 20 minutes later was moved down two floors, and had no complaints about the room from thereon in.

The room - 8033 - was well appointed with a large comfy bed, great shower, great view out of the golf course (although not all rooms will have this view). Two minor downsides: a noisy fridge which I remedied by yanking the power lead from the wall and slow wifi at 1mbps. You can pay for faster wifi though, although personally I think this is a bit nickel-and-dime.

Good selection of bars for evening drinks and snacks, nice restaurant for breakfast - buffet is $22/adult. Great large patio area. I found the man who stands on the edge of the golf course, playing the bagpipes to be a bit annoying every single night, just because it drones on for so long, but that might be just me.

Nice pools - one is adults only - great gardens, good views, plenty of parking.

What's not to like? (apart from the bagpipes) - well, I'd stay again, and that's my benchmark for a hotel.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time for reviewing your recent stay and we trust you had a successful conference. We are delighted to hear that you were able to move rooms and be more comfortable. It sure is nice to be able to come early for a conference and have some relaxation time and get the lay of the land before your colleagues! We are sorry you did not enjoy our bagpiper each night. Our guests rave about the experience they have being able to unwind from the day and enjoy a drink or appetizer in Dreamweaver’s Canyon Courtyard while listening to the bagpiper. We hope to have the pleasure of hosting you for a vacation sometime and if there is anything we can ever assist you with please reach out to us at tripadvisor@kierlandresort.com.
