Beautiful, understated luxury in great location. Owners were attentive but respectful of privacy and helpful with ideas and reservations in the area. Walking distance to restaurants and beautiful galleries as well as spa services.

When was the last time you had a key for the main lodge after hours, offering wine and beer, etc., on the honor system? Free coffee.
Nostalgia and utter serenity define this small, privately owned retreat. It's like being in a rustic 5-star resort from a classic movie, although conveniently in town. We, too have stayed in top places (re: other reviews); Monaco may be different but has nothing on El Portal.
The grape-arbored courtyard with twinkly lights and a fire pit is gorgeous at night. The rooms are unique, extremely comfortable and generous — with amazing bathroom fixtures. A small but excellent staff make up the rooms and serve breakfast.
If you have a dog, you can't do better: private patio yards (including a hose for hikers/waders) plus a welcome basket of towel, washcloth, blanket, sheet, treats, and bags. Thick adobe walls mask random barking. Dogs even are welcome at breakfast in the main lodge.
However, guest dogs were neither many nor intrusive.
El Portal is adjacent to the Tlaquepaque art center (with Rene's famous restaurant) and an enormous, beautiful park along Oak Creek. Much more is a short drive away.
We definitely will return.

Although I consider myself to be a Ritz Carlton/Four Seasons/Mandarin Oriental kinda guy, I selected El Portal for my wife and me based on the strength of the TripAdvisor reviews. We were not disappointed. Steve and Connie built this place from the ground up as their dream inn, complete with adobe walls, natural tones, amazing wooden beams and antique hardware. It is rustic, charming, and beautifully maintained. This isn't a Hyatt, so don't come here expecting it to be. It is more like staying in someone's private lodge, with free/included wi-fi and a serve yourself (honor bar for wine, beer and soft drinks downstairs) mentality. (They do serve a very nice breakfast, which is extra, but no other meals). El Portal is a perfect match for the ambiance and aesthetics of Sedona and the surrounding beauty. Our room (#9) was wonderful, and we enjoyed being just steps from Tlaquepaque and its wonderful restaurants and shops. We only had one minor complaint, which will seem really weird, but both my wife and I commented on how much we disliked the silverware at breakfast. The style of silverware used is very western and "themed," appropriate to the Inn, but instead of having flat handles to hold onto and press against, the handles are round, which makes them constantly turn in your hand when you are attempting to cut or eat your food. Very frustrating! Fortunately we laughed about it, as it was seriously the only thing we could think of to complain about at this truly wonderful small hotel. Thanks Steve and Connie; we will most certainly be back.

As soon as you walk through the gates of El Portal, you realize the website does not do it justice. I stayed there with 3 girlfriends for 3 nights (we are all in our 30s) and we absolutely loved it! It was so quiet and we felt like we were tucked-away in a private B&B. We visited several other resort / hotel properties while in Sedona for lunches, dinners, spa appointments, etc. and each time we would say how happy we were that we were staying at El Portal vs. anywhere else.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room #12. It was very large with a fireplace, fold-out couch and a King bed, as well as...

We recently stayed at El Portal. We chose it because we needed a place that was pet friendly. We had a lovely time. The room was beautiful but dark. On the last day, I ran into the owner and when I mentioned it to him he said "I will take care of that by the end of today).
The soaking tub was terrific. Breakfast is not included but was tasty and there were many choices. We sat outside in the courtyard which was quiet and beautiful.
Dogs welcome and they include a lovely doggie basket-- blankets and treats for the dog which was a delight. The hotel is literally next door to Tlaquepaque but you would not know it was there as it is so quiet and peaceful. Highly recommended.

We spent 4 nights at the El Portal what a lovely place. First off the rooms where beautiful and wonderfully decorated. The staff and owners Steve & Connie were very friendly and very knowledgeable. The grounds were beautiful kept with a nice fire in the fire pit at night. One of the main reason for us staying here was because it was ranked one of the pet friendliest hotels. It is for sure! They made our Bernese Mountain dog feel very welcome. They have a special doggie gift basket with a doggie blanket, sheet, towel, treats, and potty bags. You can also have your dog with you in there restaurant (as long as they are well behaved). There is a park close by to walk your dog and the Tlaquepaque Craft Village has nice restaurants and shops within just a few feet of the hotel. We also took a 4-wheel drive sunset tour arranged by Steve that we were able to take Bear with. We all had a really great time and will be back again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Molesworth room the only thing is if you have your windows open sometimes the fire...

My family and I stayed at El Portal in late April. Each of our spacious rooms had thick adobe walls, huge exposed beams with vaulted ceilings, and each room was unique starting with the one of a kind room door. I loved the unusual antique furniture, lamps, and art in all of our rooms, and the Navajo rugs displayed throughout the hotel. Bathrooms were spacious and spa-like. Most rooms have a patio or balcony space overlooking a central courtyard where guests gather informally around a fire pot each evening. The real treasure of this place is in the form of Steve, the owner, who takes the time to share his knowledge of Sedona's restaurants, hiking trails, shopping areas, Sinagua ruins and petroglyph locations, or whatever a guest may ask about, even to identify a large, very green lizard from a picture taken while hiking. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of choices from light to more filling fare, and every staff member was very helpful and welcoming. We all loved the casual, intimate atmosphere at El Portal and look forward to returning!

Room Tip: Depending on time of year, you may ask for a room with a gas fireplace or one with a balcony. Every...
