We took a jeep tour to the top of Schnebly Hill Road to take in some of the best red bluff formations and the pine forest at the top. Hold on to the bars of the jeep-it was bumpy but fun!

Schnebly Hill road is a winding rough dirt road with lots of large rocks in it. It is a great trip to take. You do need a vehicle with high ground clearance. Make sure to stop at the second gate of three. Park on the side of the road and walk up to the top of the rocks. (Not recommended if you fear high places.) You will get the best view of Sedona and the Verde Valley from 3000+ ft. Sunset from the peek is awesome. The wind is always whipping past the point up from the valley. You should ask a local if the road is open. It's closed in the winter after snow starts. In the warmer weather you can go past the second gate al the way to the top and through Coconino National Forest with great fauna and wildlife views, especially in the evenings.

Every time we come to Sedona, we take our Jeep Rubicon up Schnebly Hill Road. This time the road seemed a lot rockier than in years past. Rains are evidently wearing the road down to the rock bed. Nevertheless, we saw at least one passenger car (likely a rental) banging its way up the road as its undercarriage hit rocky ledge after rocky ledge. Even with our jeep the going was slow. It would have been better to air down the tires, but we didn't want to mess with that since there was a chance of rain. The views are outstanding and we like to have our picnic lunch at Schnebly Hill Vista at the top. Best to have a current Red Rock Pass with you since you will likely want to stop and take in some of the views or short hikes.

This dirt road out of Sedona will take you through the forest. It is well maintained but can get a little wash-boardish. It will take you north out of Sedona and end up on I-17.

This road intersects 179 just South of 179/89A. After a short drive you come to a State Park area with several trailheads and a picnic table (one visible but probably more in the area). Trail info posted on signs. Parking is easy. (There is a charge)
