“Amazing native food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2013

We had a wonderful lunch at Desert Rain. The pico de gallo with cholla buds was amazing. The prickly pear smoothie was great. All of the salads, stew and drinks were fantastic. Most of the menu items are made with local products that are very healthy. We highly recommend this wonderful cafe.

“Traditional native foods make Desert Rain unique”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2012

As the first TripAdvisor Contributor to review Desert Rain, the Monk (that's me) would like to provide some additional details: First, let's find the restaurant in the town of Sells. The GPS coordinates are 31.914303, -111.887987 and they locate the large Tohono Plaza shopping center in Sells.

Visitors from Tucson's or Ajo's direction on Highway 86 should turn south into town on Sells' west side at the signs for the "Hospital" and "Basha's grocery". This is Indian Route #19 but it is not adequately signed. The Plaza is on the left about ½ mile off 86. There is plenty of parking in the Plaza lot.

Visitors are advised to review the website and online menus for dining suggestions. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. All menu items include healthy, locally produced, traditional Tohono O'odham Native American ingredients such as the unique tepary beans and the anti-oxidant, diabetes-fighting rich young buds of the cholla cactus. For breakfast I recommend the tasty and filling Desert Rain burro and any one of the fine coffees, teas or juices they offer.

The staff is cheerful and welcoming of new visitors, no matter how unfamiliar they may be with traditional Native foods. They are glad to answer any questions. The cook will probably come out to your table and ask how you like the dishes. The indoor and outdoor dining areas are spotless and tastefully decorated with Native arts. Indeed, there is a Native-operated gallery in the adjoining suite that you can review at www.tocaline.org.

Bottom line: Allow time to relax and enjoy the unique menu items. The place is very clean and the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend the Desert Rain Cafe.
