Hurunui High Country Track

Previous reviewers have correctly summarised this wonderful 3 day walk. The complete package is excellent value for money. The accommodation funky and very comfortable. The variety of track and views en route superb. However it was the little things like your heavy gear and food being taken by the hosts between the huts - no vehicles sighted or engine noise to disturb the ambience. The other little surprises not advertised that await walkers at their overnight accommodation give a real point of difference to this trip. The hosts Mandy and Dan Shand are to be commended for taking this initiative for farm diversification and allowing visitors to share this magnificent region. After 28 years of personal commercial back country operation on a guided track in Fiordland I can assure readers this walk is a real trip with a difference and highly commended. Excellent and informative web site www.walkingtrack.co.nz Suitable for moderately fit couples and groups of friends of up to 10 per departure date.

We went when the track opened on Labour weekend, experienced wonderful hospitality of the owners Mandy and Dave who have developed this wonderful tramp on their land at Island Hill, North Canterbury. The track meanders through high country farmland and forest, with two well appointed private hut in which to spend the night. The huts have full cooking facilities and hot showers, and packs can be transported between the huts for a small fee. Every thing was spotlessly clean and it was fantastic to read the history of the run, written by Daves Grandfather.
We highly recommend this tramp. Jo & Julie, Ribbonwood Franz Josef

This is a lovely place to rest and wander about. The owner is a gem of a kindly man. The kids loved the butter sculpture. We had a pleasant tea but the scones were really good.

Amazing experience and really well thought out trail and itinerary. Well marked tracks and remote, clean and comfortable huts. Lovely surprises along the way.

We started out with a night in the farm cookhouse, comfortable and clean, though a touch scary in the pitch black night with high winds and creaking floorboards! Two good day hikes, with amazing views, some great surprises and very very well equipped huts with some of the best showers we had in NZ! Interesting history of the farm is detailed in books in the huts. Also interesting information on the plants and wildlife that you pass. We were the only people on our leg of the trek, so saw no-one for 2 days!

Really nice couple running the track who have put a huge amount of time and effort into planning it, as well as selling lovely manouka honey!

This is a perfect way to enjoy some fantastic walking in the beautiful South Island, staying in three very different places on the way. The route takes you through farm land and native bush with some glorious high country views. We arrived on the first night at the shearer's quarters on Dan and Mandy Shand's farm. We received a very warm welcome from Dan and Mandy and their family. They spent two years preparing the interesting route (not too hard and not too easy!) and making the accommodation authentic but very comfortable with hot showers and fully stocked kitchens and firewood, with delicious and surprising treats awaiting us at the end of each day. The night sky at the second hut is an outstanding sight. On the morning of the third night, having slept in a cosy log cabin with a roaring fire, we awoke to snow on the surrounding mountains. We were lucky enough to have the route to ourselves and really enjoyed the fact that we could take our own food but have our packs carried for us from hut to hut, so we just needed our light day packs for lunch and water en route. This was a perfect holiday with lovely, generous hosts who have made their wonderful property accessible for others to enjoy. We rounded our trip off with a visit to Hamner Springs to soak our walking muscles! Highly recommended. I also recommend Dan and Mandy's home produced honey!
