“Best place in Manuel Antonio and Quepos”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

If you are thinking about going to visit the Manuel Antonio National Park i really recommend you to stay at Hotel La Palapa EcoLodge Resort. I stayed there 8 days and the service was really good, nice rooms, a really complete breakfast with fruits , eggs , toasts , lemonade and coffee with an aditional possibility to have beautifull birds eating fruit next to you besides other animal species you can see inside the resort property. You can book all excursions directly with the owners and ask for other usefull informations. It´s a quite and peacefull place during the night where you can rest perfectly after a busy day of walks and excursions. if you look for nightlife you can choose between Quepos or Dominical, 10 minutes by car for each side. So, to Manuel and Cristina a big thanks for everything and see you next time.

Room Tip: I stayed in the room nr 12 and had a bird nest inf front of the window.

Absolutely great value for money and more.
Room is very comfortable and generous in space, not fancy but very nice. The garden is the star, very well taken care. You can certainly feel the care that is invested in the nature around you. The food you can have in the restaurant's hotel is as good and healthy as tasty and homemade, even you can have original and unique dishes created by them!
The family who runs the place is absolutely lovely. Cristina, Manuel and their son Tomas are awesome people always sharing tips from places and things to do in the area, they are real experts hosts.
Tomas acted as a guide and showed us Toucans that live in the property, quite a nature's expert.
We had a great time there!!!
We totally recommend it to everybody, from families to couples or groups.

The man who runs this place is intolerable. We had left clothes out on our bed to use after a long hike and as we were leaving the maids entered our room. When we returned we discovered that several expensive articles of clothing were missing. Upon talking with the management they were of no help at all. He kept telling us stupid stories about how he's had things go missing in the gardens around the premises and how our stuff might be scattered about as well (this simply was not the case). He refused to take responsibility for his maids claiming that "they have been working here for a long time so I know I can trust them (later revealed to be 2 months)... The food was absolutely terrible even by Costa Rican standards. Don't eat at the hotel if you can avoid it. We had their curry one night which was promised to be "the real deal" only to discover someone had basically put a chicken in the blender, bones and all, then added about half a gallon of canola oil all of which was poured over rice. I'm not even sure I tasted curry in it. We also couldn't figure out why it was an ecolodge other than the fact that they don't provide shampoo and make you walk down the road to buy it. We stayed at some gorgeous and true eco lodges but this is really just a resort with a false title. However, the grounds are pretty and the walk up the hill behind the hotel is worth it although very steep and treacherous.

this is a wonderful place that is very reasonably priced. a beautifully maintained garden paradise, it's off the beaten path but close enough to quepos that you don't feel completely isolated. the owners manuel and christina are also incredibly hospitable, which makes for a great atmosphere amongst the guests, and they serve up beautiful breakfasts and delicious home-cooked dinners. la palapa was definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

I travelled to Costa Rica for the third time with my husband and our 2 kids (8 and 11), because we are Costa Rican fans.

We booked at La Palapa because of the reviews we saw in Tripadvisor, and because we didn’t want to experience some of the hotels of our past trips.

When we arrived at La Palapa we met Cristina (the owner) at the reception which is by the pool and we were absolutely stunned by the gardens and the sounds of the birds that came from everywhere.

The bungalow had everything we needed and were very beautiful with special warm rustic decoration, very comfortable beds that let as sleep so to the sound of the frogs at night and to the birds in the morning. Although I wasn’t there to cook, the kitchen had the necessary for a quick salad or sandwich. Also, the fact that we had a separate room from the kids (in the living room area) was good news.

The property is gorgeous, luxurious gardens (thanks to the owner Manuel) and we got to see a sloth, toucans and the red eyed tree frog in our own backyard. The kids even helped to get an iguana out of the swimming pool and got to take a picture with it.

The beaches are beautiful near the resort, it’s close enough from Manuel Antonio, but a lot more quiet. At the end of the day, we all dipped in the pool until it was time for dinner.

Cristina was a great help at meal time. She always accommodated to the kids needs and likes with a smile. We all loved her lemon mousse with mango and all he specialties that she cooks with a touch of the Portuguese taste, because she I a Portuguese living in Costa Rica.

Tomás, the owner’s 8 year old son, was a great playmate, for the pool and to play cards.

This is a great resort with a family atmosphere with a lot of wildlife, and we all went on very good and very well organized tours like Canopy, Rafting and Whale Watching in a Cano Island, that we enjoyed very much.

La Palapa Ecolodge Resort for us was by far the best of all the hotels we stayed in Costa Rica during all our visits to Costa Rica and this review is to testify what we saw, to all like us that wanted to travel to Costa Rica and have a good place to stay.

We were a little apprehensive when we found out that we had booked our vacation during the rainy season. As soon as our plane landed, our worries about weather vanished. LaPalapa is a gem, and owners Manuel and Christina are very hands-on, and will lead you in the right direction to show you the most entertaining, adventurous time that you can imagine!

Close enough to the many beautiful beaches, but far enough removed from any traffic, or vendors, you can relax without feeling like a tourist. You can sit by the pool, or have Manuel take you on a personal hike through his virgin rain forest.

If you are renting a car, i might recommend an SUV. other than that, get out your hiking boots, and bathing suits and enjoy the nature that God has created! Pura Vida!!

I stayed at La Palapa for four nights in September and had an absolutely incredible experience. I went to Costa Rica to be surrounded by nature, and that's what I got at La Palapa! Although the hotel is about a 30 minute drive from the touristy areas of Quepos and Manuel Antonio, this ended up being a huge PLUS. While Quepos and Manuel Antonio are bustling with tourists and activity, La Palapa hotel is in the middle of jungle, in the quiet and adorable town of Portalon. It was wonderful waking up in the morning to only the sounds of nature, especially all different species of birds (including toucans!). I spent a good amount of time in Manuel Antonio doing the touristy things, like whale watching and the mangrove tour (both amazing), but I also spent a lot of time relaxing outside at the hotel. There really are no words to describe how beautiful and peaceful this hotel is. Just imagine gorgeous flowers, wildlife, and lush forest everywhere you look.

There is also a lot to do on the hotel property and right in the neighborhood. We went on a gorgeous hike through the hotel's private trail that lead to a waterfall. I also walked around the little town of Portalon and fell in love with the flowers, rivers, trees, animals walking around, toucans in the trees, and adorable local schools and homes. The deserted Playa Linda is also a couple minutes away by car and is breathtaking.

Cristina and Manuel, the hotel owners, were wonderful and so helpful with everything. They went out of their way to make sure I got to experience as much as possible.

Cristina is the most amazing cook, and was able to accommodate to my vegan diet. The food she made was some of the best vegan dinners I've had!

If you are looking to party then this isn't the right place. If you want to truly experience nature, disconnect, and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, then this place is perfect.

I was very sad to leave, but I know I'll be back!

Definitely the most gorgeous place I've ever been to!

Room Tip: I stayed in the basic room. It was large, nice shower, gorgeous views of jungle. I know there are...
