We stayed here in January 2014. We read the reviews and Rio Magnolia has been described very accurately. The hotel is simply excellent with great hosts Maureen & John their extremely attentive staff and friendly dogs. The food was wonderful and the room perfect with terrific views. It was far and away the best place we stayed in Costa Rica. It is difficult to get to but well worth the effort. We are sorry it has taken us so long to leave a review. We would not hesitate to recommend this gem.

Other reviewers have rightly raved about the beauty and serenity of the surroundings, the friendliness of the owners and staff, and the comfort of the lodge itself. We agree with all of the praise - we loved our stay at Rio Magnolia. Sitting on the balcony outside our room and listening to toucans call back and forth or watching the colorful birds just a few feet away was really special. What was almost more important to us, however, was the obvious respect and caring that Maureen and John showed to the local people and the environment. Bringing in the local band to play traditional music on the patio and paying a fair wage to their workers says volumes about the kind of people the Patersons are. And even though the lodge is quite remote and just about the only option for meals and drinks, they charge very reasonable prices. Everything is done in a kind, understated, caring way. There is just so much to recommend Rio Magnolia - it truly is an exceptional experience to stay there - in so many ways. Phyllis & Marc K.

My sister and I traveled to Costa Rica last March. After doing a lot of research, I settled on Rio Magnolia for a 4 night stay, because of the location and the reviews. I gravitate towards unique places hoping that I will have a memorable experience. Rio Magnolia was the second place on our trip, the first being in the Osa Peninsula on the beach with very basic accommodations. To round out our experience I wanted a place in the mountains that was not your typical touristy hotel, but with a bit more comfort and amenities than the first place. Rio Magnolia lived up to all of the glowing reviews that I had read. The road to get to the hotel was fun and exciting; and yes you do need a 4 wheel drive. The hotel staff met us on arrival and took great care of us until our departure. John and Maureen were the perfect hosts and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our room, El Cielo, was comfortable, spacious and beautifully decorated (fresh flowers everywhere!). A second twin sized bed was added to the room at no extra charge to accommodate our needs and it was just as comfortable as the queen bed. The meals and drinks were superb. The infinity pool and hotel grounds were beautiful. Views from our room and the hotel grounds were amazing, with a gorgeous sunset every night. One night we were entertained by a great local band. John and Maureen helped us plan all of our activities. We took a hike with John and two other hotel guests to the waterfall. The hike was fun, educational, challenging and memorable. Our experience at Rio Magnolia could not have been better.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with El Cielo. It is private, roomy and serene.

Rio Magnolia is a beautiful place in a location that will make you say Wow at every view. I live in Costa Rica and just needed to get away for a few days and found the lodge to be total perfection. It's in a stunning and tranquil location, surrounded by nature. The staff was so friendly and helpful, John and Maureen were a delight to talk with and the environment was similar to Monteverde but without all the crowds. So many birds and other wildlife to enjoy...both hearing and seeing them fly around the property, all throughout the day. I ate every meal at the lodge and I was never disappointed. Each meal was different but so delicious and filling. As a vegetarian, I was pleased with the variety they offered. It was not just one green salad after another.

It's a beautiful place where you can just go to decompress and relax. I can't wait to return!

Room Tip: I stayed in Heliconia and it was total perfection!

If you are looking for a place out of the ordinary, then Rio Magnolia is your place. Wonderful hosts, superb cuisine, and most of all, a place of serenity, beauty and a unique bond with nature. Gorgeous surroundings in the cloud forest, it's «Pura Vida» at his best!

We've been to Costa Rica many times over the last 10 years and this is one of our favourites. Beautifully located, wonderful hosts, welcoming staff, great food, comfortable bed and private accommodation (Mongo Congo) and even challenging hiking on the grounds if you're up for it! (Try the hike out to main road for a beer at the Mirador! Definitely visit the waterfall! )
Make sure you have a good 4X4 to get into property. Tough road but once your there you won't want to leave too often anyway! Highly recommend a visit!!!!

This was our first trip to Costa Rica, and we could not have found a better introduction to the country. Rio Magnolia is a phenomenal find, settled high enough up in the Dominical rain forest that the round-the-clock cool breezes and breathtaking beauty will have you certain you made the right choice.

As echoed in previous posts, the journey to the property is an adventure to say the least; we made it in a rented 4x4 SUV on what (for the final 40 minutes' transit off-road) became one of the wildest drives either myself or my partner have encountered. But the payoff is as steep as the climb: the lodge is intimate, with an attentive local staff led by the easygoing demeanor of hosts John and Maureen. It is the perfect blend of luxurious hospitality (delicious meals, clean facilities, and comfortable amenities) and the up-close, rugged experience of being embedded in the rainforest (with its ongoing soundtrack of insects and birds, hydropowered facilities, untamed hiking paths, and limited digital connections).

If you're active enough to traverse the inclines of the property's trails, the Rio Magnolia canine tour guides will take you to a stunning private rock-water slide. There is no shortage of awesome views, and the lack of crowds makes for a relaxed, deeply personalized visit. We left the grounds just one morning over our four-night stay, to do the 8am zip line tour at Hacienda Baru. But mostly, we were more than satisfied to stay in our secluded paradise. In addition to the waterside hike and ample pool time, we toured the coffee plantation, small pond area, and toucan sights. The meals and coffee were divine, and the kitchen had no problem accommodating an egg-free vegetarian diet. Sleep came easily even for an insomniac like myself, lured in by the steady hum of the forest. There is nothing like waking up at 6am when Rio Magnolia sits *above* the morning clouds and you can still see the moon glint through the pink-and-blue sky.

I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Mongo Congo, a bungalo set aside from the main lodge by a one-minute walk across a bridge path, gave...
