“Great for wildlife viewing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2011

This is a great place to stay for any animal lover. There are several self guiding trails on property or one can choose between many guided tours offered daily. Guides are all very good. We have stayed in original cabin: two separate bedrooms, a living area with kitchen. Clean and sleeping was good. There are also new cabins alongside the pool. Breakfast (and dinner upon request) is served in restaurant. Food is OK.

We ended up here at the end of a trip to CR. Everyone is very nice, the prices are ridiculously good. We stayed in an economy cabin (3 bedroom/back/kitchenette) that was huge and only $45 a night! It was a great place to recharge from the stress of driving all over the rest of the country. We also saw tons of monkeys and birds. The beach is pristine and on multiple occasions saw nobody on it for a few miles.

If you go in the green season, make sure you take plenty of clothes because they will not completely dry out. I made the mistake of assuming I could wash clothes along the way and they would dry.

Room Tip: The economy cabins do not share walls and are older than the other cabins. The economy cabins are a...

We did not stay at Hacienda Baru, but we did take their zipline tour as part of our adventure. Unlike other tours we had taken, Baru's focused in on the ecology of the area, rather than just the ziplines themselves. We had two excellent guides that provided us with remarkable information about the area's incredibly diverse flora and fauna. They were able to spot far more animals than we were ever to see by walking through by ourselves. It would be my recommendation to skip paying for the guided tours at Manuel Antonio and opt for a smaller crowd, a better rate, and a cooler tour at Hacienda Baru. Baru is located closer to the Dominical area, so if you are staying there, it is definitely worth the visit!

We spent three nights at Hacienda Baru, which is close to Domincal, Costa Rica (not Quepos). Our cabin was very comfortable and clean, the staff was great, the pool warm, the food excellent, and the trails perfect. We took advantage of two of their guided hikes, which provided a great introduction to the flora and fauna of Costa Rica. Our guides were very knowledgeable, and we definitely got our money's worth. This introduction made the further explorations that we did in Costa Rica even better because we knew what to look for and how to look.

If you are looking for an uncrowded destination with great food, eco-friendly activities, and nice rooms, this is a great choice.

Room Tip: Review their web site - it is accurate.

This place is located along a beach front that is amazing. The small area carved out for the hotel buildings is only a fraction of the entire property. We did the zip lines which included an informative nature walk and spent time on the beach. The room was older, but large and a/c was not really needed due to the breeze.
There is also included a butterfly enclosure and a number of walking trails.
Recommended.

We found out about Hacienda Baru while we were in Costa Rica and decided to travel there from Quepos a day after visiting Manuel Antonio. What a contrast. Manuel Antonio was crowded and we saw very few animals-never spied a monkey even from some distance. At Hacienda Baru we had a great tour guide-Olman-a young man with a wonderful personality and SO much information. We saw capuchin monkeys , many birds and other wildlife. Ate lunch there -very good. Beautiful natural grounds. Looked at one of the newer cabins and definitely will return and stay there instead of Quepos. Jack Ewing has created a little slice of heaven and his commitment to the environment is inspirational. Bought several wood pieces, excellent prices. We had only a few hours this time, Next visit will be much longer.

Room Tip: Room back by the pool is very nice.

the 2 bedroomed cabin was spotless and reasonably spacious for us (6 people),the kitchenette was of little use -not that we needed it.great pool available when we wanted, and beautifully kept gardens full of wildlife.the trails (self-guided/included) were some of the best we visited in costa rica,(saw -otter,coati,capuchin,sloth,iguana,lizards,crabs,peccary,agouti,and many birds).we went out for dinner to a cheaper good quality soda in dominical,(5mins in car).breakfast was not huge but good quality.the reason for "almost perfect"was the staff-we arrived at 6.55 for breakfast on the fist day,(wanted to leave prompt to drive to manuel antonio),to find a large table with one occupant,we sat at another table and were then more or less ignored until 7.30,whilst the staff served the occupants of the large table whom turned up from 7.00 to 7.20.(a school party).also the very friendly guide who greeted us on arrival, and the first morning at breakfast, then ignored our greetings in the afternoon and the second morning when he realised that we had not booked a tour with him.i met the owner jack when i went to enquire about travel time to manuel antonio, and unlike other comments i have read did not find him particulary friendly!.get a little more staff friendly guys and you would have the perfect place!.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The lodge is located at the entrance to Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge which protects 330 hectares (815 acres) of tropical forest, wetlands, mangrove and 3 kilometers of pristine Baru Beach. The refuge offers seven kilometers of well marked nature trails and a bird watching tower for a modest entrance fee. Guided tours with sharp-eyed local guides include two different types of canopy tours, five hiking tours, a camping tour and three bird watching tours. Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge & Lodge is situated on Costa Rica's Southern Pacific Coast. This is a region of distinct natural beauty where forest covered mountains rise up from the dramatic Pacific coastline. The village of Dominical is just 3 km from Hacienda Baru located. Hacienda Baru Ecolodge's bungalow style cabins are large and roomy. Each one has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with one double and one twin bed. Each bungalow has a bathroom with hot water shower, living room, porch, and kitchenette. For your convenience, they come equipped with fridge, coffee maker, hot plate and fans in all the rooms. They are ideal for families. In addition to the cabins, Hacienda Baru Ecolodge is now offering six new Pool View Guest Rooms. Each of these superior units has a large bathroom, a porch and ample space for beds and other furniture. Each will normally have a king size bed and a twin bed , but they can be equipped with up to four twin beds. Each has a frige and coffee maker as well. The attractive tile roofing is made from recycled plastic bags. A well ventilated design, insulation between the roofing and the polished teak ceiling, and overhead fans all insure cool comfort for our guests. All of the teak and gmelina wood used in the construction came from Hacienda Baru's own plantations. The wood for the pine beams and cypress furniture all came from plantations as well. Not a single piece of the wood used came from a natural forest. Solar heaters provide plenty of hot water for the bathrooms. The outside walls are slate and polished teak. The new guest rooms are conveniently located right in front of our new swimming pool. Our breezy open air restaurant allows you to observe the gardens and natural surroundings as you dine. We have five private ranchos for guests that want an intimate setting perhaps for a romantic candlelight dinner or a special family meal. Our menu is primarily very tasty typical Costa Rican food, but we do offer a variety of dishes for those who either don't like or want a break from rice and beans. We offer a selection Costa Rican fruit drinks known as FRESCOS meaning refreshing, soft drinks, a selection of Costa Rican beer, you must have heard of Imperial, wines and other licors. The swimming pool at Hacienda Baru Lodge is disinfected with ozone produced by an ozone generator which injects a constant flow of this eco-friendly gas into the water. This system of disinfection allows us to maintain a very low concentration of chlorine in the pool. The chlorine level is so slight that it is imperceptible to pool users. The swimming pool is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Guests from both the cabins and guest rooms are welcome to use the pool during these hours. Bird Watching, Canopy Exploration and Ecological Tours are our specialty. Our bilingual grass roots naturalist guides will help you discover the wonders of the tropical rainforest, such as leaf cutter ants, the sleepy sloths and the nesting site of the Common Pootoo. On our tours you can experience everything from the Rainforest Canopy to Mangrove Swamps or the Jungle at Night. ... more   less
