“A nice small hotel, close to beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2013

We booked here as a result of an emergency (the placed we booked was not available and we had no where else to go). We were a large group.
The manager was nice and was able to accommodate 3 rooms for our group. A bit overpriced, but it was a holiday week.

The breakfast was very good. I wish they would have had some more "tico food" choices though.
The pool was clean and nice, our rooms faced a nice garden and then the pool.
The big plus is that the rooms have kitchen and fridge which allowed us to save on lunches.
There are two grocery stores right next to the hotel.

The staff was really really friendly and service oriented.

Do not expect a 'resort', but the place was clean, nice gardens, not bad beds. It's a step up from budget hotel quality.

There are several restaurants around, mainly for dinner.

Beach is walking distance, with many things to do...

Room Tip: Anything facing the pool. The also have bigger 'cabins', next to the restaurant.

My partner and myself stayed here twice on our recent trip San Jose to Panama and return. We've stayed in Dominical a few times before, but this time, I wanted to try the DooWack! We did think it a bit expensive considering current occupancy rates.. but we took our chance on the way down. Very quiet grounds, and romantic pool area.. rarely used.
The rooms we had were scantily furnished.. (nite stand only on one side of the bed..no drawers anywhere. Only one hand towel and no 'panitos' wash cloths (not uncommon in cheaper Tico lodgings. Bathroom very small.

No cups or glasses in the rooms. You can get some if you ask, but you shouldn't have to.

Don't expect any toiletries, single bar of soap in shower. Kinda okay A/C.

No tv channel line-up in the room.. small thing maybe. Restaurant okay for included breakfast, but generally expensive and unremarkable, except for the custom made pizzas, which impressed.
Best thing about the experience was the charm and helpfulness of Alexandra and the others at the restaurant. We returned to stay on our way back to SanJose, though it was late as we'd stopped for dinner. Alexandra opened the office and checked us in quickly and efficiently. She served us Pizzas and beer at the rancho near the pool next day, so we could lounge around after we checked out at noon.

We'll surely come back even just to say 'hola' to Alexandra... her strong customer service skills are a real asset to this property. She is struggling with English, but her warmth comes through in perfect translation.

Finding that we had a rather hectic stressful time at the border, Alex arranged for the charming chamber person to place candles, incense, fresh flowers all around in our room and the bathroom... we were blown away by this unexpected gesture.. muchisimas gracias, Alexandra~!!

I honestly can't believe some of the extremely harsh reviews here...seems like a different place than the one we stayed in. Perhaps coming from much less experienced travelers? We've traveled very extensively to many countries and also throughout Costa Rica... one has to realize this is not the Four Seasons nor a chain in Florida.. we had a most pleasant stay.

Upon our arrival we were greeted with a very run down Hotel with a very sketchy vibe. There were surfer dudes and surfer chicks all over the place, and one guy laying passed out in his room after smoking marijuana, the smell was thick in the air. The beach is close, but we didn't feel safe their either. I will say the resturant was great, and we would earth there again! When Weretired to our room things progressively got worse. The air conditioner in the room turned itself off every 45 minutes, and took about 15 minutes to restart. It was also directly above the bed and dripped water onto the bed. We called the front desk and they did offer to change out room but it was ten o'clock at night and we were exhausted. I suppose we were hoping the problem would fix itself. Needless to say, we didn't sleep a wink!!! The air conditioning had to be restarted every 45 minutes, and we honestly did not feel safe. Them when we tried to explain at the front desk they hardly spoke English. I'd just avoid this place entirely.

My wife and I stayed here for 1 night while touring CR.

We found Dominical a little disappointing - aside from the beach there is not a lot happening, the only place with any life was a bar at one end of the village that seemed to be full of, and run by, American expats, which is not really what we were looking for.
Consequently, we ended up having an evening meal at the hotel, which is something we generally try to avoid. It was ok, but I still cannot work out how a shared pizza and salad plus a couple of drinks came to $51.
Other than that, everything was fine, albeit our basic room was on the small side, but the air con and shower were fine. The other major positives were the well tended gardens and the excellent pool and surrounds. There was a lot of greenery around the pool, so inevitably, some dead leaves and foliage dropped into the pool from time to time, but that, in my eyes at least, is far preferable to clinical and characterless concrete. It also meant some excellent opportunities for seeing wildlife, including humming birds and some huge lizards.

I stayed there over christmas 2012 and it was a total nightmare. When i checked in the manager demanded all the money, in cash, upfront. Later in the day this 'manager' was deeply offensive to me when i complained about the pool being out of order - once again. its clearly been 'out of order' for several years judging by previous reviews. Without bothering to ask me whether i was going to continue to stay, he refunded most of my money for the 4 day stay and then told me that if i didnt leave by mid day he would put all my things outside the room. then he threatened to call the police if i didnt leave by check out time. The man is an ignorant chauvinist and has no business working in a hotel. I WOULD NEVER, EVER stay there again. Sleeping on the streets would be preferable.

Room Tip: Don't stay here unless you want to be insulted.

Considering the cramped, small size of Dominical, Hotel Diuwak felt like a spacious garden in the middle of chaos. We wanted to be near the beach and beach-front restaurants, which we were. Our room was adequate--The bathroom was spacious, water in the shower was hot, and the bedding was colorful and new. However, the room was so small that we had to move our beds to open the door. A/C worked fine in our room. Our kids had to change rooms because theirs did not. Their new room was large enough to open the door, but the bathroom was much smaller, and definitely from an older remodel.
The pool was nice, however the back bar was closed, so there was no pool-side service. The Sunday before Christmas, when a lot of new tourists were arriving, their pool was closed for cleaning.
Unfortunately, almost all of the rooms were empty, so I imagine that's why the bar was closed. There was a lackluster restaurant where we could get coffee and beers throughout the day. We tried the free breakfast one time, and it wasn't good enough to bring us back.
All in all, I would stay there again. Their staff was friendly and helpful. Be forewarned that no one there speaks English, other than Marlin, the waiter who helped me with my reservation.

We booked Hotel Diuwak despite reading some negative reviews, we enjoyed our stay but there are defintely some negatives. Firstly the rooms are outdated and could do with being modernised, our room seemed too small for a double and single bed - with suitcases too we had very little space to move. The pool is lovely but the pool area is bland and not well monitored, there was cigarette butts and empty beers cans on the ground. One big negative for me was the breakfast, you are given a menu to make a choice but then you are only allowed one of 3 things from the larger menu - or else you pay for it. The breakfast I ordered could only be described a measly - a tiny portion of scrambled egg and 1 slice of toast, when I asked for extra toast I got 1 more slice .... for 2 people ! The staff took away our plates as we chewed out last mouthful and it was all very rushed. The next day we decided to give it a miss and pay for a decent, relaxed breakfast elsewhere.

On the positive side the staff are friendly, they were mostly very young and seemed to be in training but they were helpful and attentive. The AC is the room was excellant and a welcome relief from the heat. The location is also good and is quiet - but then so is Dominical in general.
