“Beautiful views, friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2009

Listening to the waves 24 hours a day and smelling the flowers throughout the property is incredibly relaxing. We arrived after traveling through Peru and feeling run-down from all the hiking and non-stop action. What a perfect place to unwind! You can lounge by the pool, in a hammock or take a 2 min walk to the sandy beach. Restaurants and stores are within a 5 minute drive. If you don't feel like driving, get delivery. The staff will tell you what's best around here.

We have the Pelican room. Very spacious, air conditioned and clean. If there is anything you need, the staff will get it. They will even do your laundry!

I am looking at the ocean and listening to the birds as I type this. Pretty awesome, eh? Earlier today we had some fresh pineapple by the pool. I'd love to come back here anytime. Remember that you are in the jungle so use your bug spray :)

We stayed in the Dolphin Room the beds were cozy and it had a little kitchen -that I needed to heat up my babies milk. Jen was nice enough to offer to move the microwave in our room, but we didnt need it as it had the coffee maker and stove. The view and the sound of the water hitting the rocks was amazing. This has to be the best location in the area. The garden area and pool is where we spent most of our day. We asked where we should eat and Doug and Jen gave us a wide selection to choose from. Thanks to you both for making our stay so comfortable.
On another note, there is a lot of wild life in the area. we saw so many different birds and iquana's. They said they have monkies as well, but we didnt see any...this time. We will be back!

I really like the Costa Paraiso. It's simple and beautiful, the view of the water and the rocks is great, and an amazing strip of palm tree lined/pink shell sprinkled beach is a two minute walk from the room (or less). We had the beach entire to ourselves a number of times and it was awesome!

If you like the feel of Dominical, you'll probably like the Costa Paraiso. Dominical is not for those looking for a pampering luxury spa. You have to be willing to brave an infamously pitted rocky road to get there (though I hear they're paving it soon) and it's basically and low key surfer haven.

The Costa Paraiso is well-suited for this environment. It feels like crashing at a friends place. And while you may want to bring your own shampoo, Doug is friendly and happy to invite you to come join him and his his friends as they jam by the hammocks (don't worry... he's considerate of people sleeping and it never gets very loud) and can point you to some great little beaches and waterfalls that you'll have virtually to yourself.

I am not quite sure what to say about this place. First, when we arrived, the only person there was a security guard who did not speak any English. There were 2 of us on the trip who knew a decent amount of Spanish--we weren't fluent by any means, but we had been able to get by up to this point in our trip. When I told him we had a reservation and we wanted to check in, he said someone was in our room. We had no idea what was going on. The language issue made it difficult to communicate, but luckily our driver, Rubier, was a phone call away to help us translate. (Thanks, Rubier!!). We found out that someone was in our room and the manager, Jennifer was not there, but would be back. We went to a restaurant and came back. It was late by this point and we were ready to get in a room. Jennifer claimed that there was a problem with the toilet in the room we had reserved (the Dolphin Room), so she rented it to another couple at a discount, and that she had saved a different room for us. Well, the room she saved for us (the Pelican Room) had one full bed and a sofa bed. We really did not want the sofa bed as they are not very comfortable. I was really upset by this, but we did not have many options at that point. Jennifer did offer us a nice discount and we were only staying there for 2 nights, so we took it. Honestly though, she never apologized for the situation and she seemed really defensive when I tried to explain why we didn't want the Pelican Roost. Because Costa Paraiso is so small, I made sure that I looked at all of the rooms online very closely before deciding to book the Dolphin Lodge. I am not sure that I believe the toilet story, but even if it is true, I still felt like the situation was not handled well.

Other than that issue, which certainly dampened the rest of the stay, we had a nice time. The grounds are really nice--the pool is fine, the view is gorgeous, and there were lots of lizards running around the property. Our room was okay. We saw a lot of other rooms on the property when the guard was trying to get us to stay in a different room, and to be honest, I don't know if I would want to stay in some of the others. I think the rooms themselves could use a little but of upkeep and a major cleaning. But, it was cheap and the view was gorgeous.

We stayed in the Toucan Nest while at Costa Paraiso, while the view is spectacular, the actual cabin itself could use some improvements. Ants took over the bathroom at night and while breakfast is advertised as part of the stay, the only thing offered was coffee.

Doug and his business partner Jennifer made our 4 day stay at Costa Paraiso outstanding. Knowing it was our honeymoon, they left out a nice big bottle of Argentine wine on our porch in anticipation of our arrival. They also had great recommendations on local restaurants, great area excursions like canopy tours and waterfall-jumping trips, and where to go when you get a flat tire! They obviously know the Dominical area.

We stayed in the "Toucan Nest" bungalow which is set off by itself with the most unbelievable view of the beach and breakers about 75 yards below. With our own private deck and chairs, we had a perfect spot to enjoy the first part of our honeymoon in Costa Rica. Guests of Costa Paraiso should know that, like anywhere else in Costa Rica, there are bugs and to be prepared to deal with them. They were not a major problem for us, however, they were definitely noticeable so don’t leave food out!

  • Liked — Great location on the cove
  • Disliked — Bugs - buts that's life in Costa Rica!
