This was our fourth stay at SFTS and it certainly will not be our last. Every time we book our stay, my husband and I can’t wait to wake up, sit on the patio, drink our coffee and just listen to the jungle come alive. There is nothing better. Each morning we would set off on a hike up the hill to see what type of birds or animals we would see. On two occasions during our last visit, we watched a group of white faced monkeys literarily fly across the road from one tree to the next. What a treat. I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time. On top of that, we also saw monkeys from our patio as well as daily visits from toucans, aracaries and a host of other birds.

The reason we keep coming back is the same reason this place is rated so high. The villas are impeccable. No detail has been forgotten. The pool and rancho area is also a very nice place to relax, grab a drink in the evening and meet other guests and exchange experiences on places to eat and things to do. But what makes SFTS so special to us are the hosts/friends, Daryl and Donna who are two of the nicest, most accommodating people you will ever meet. On top of that they have the world’s best housekeeper (Blanca, I hope I got her name right) who cleans your room like nobody’s business and gardener (Alvin) who is constantly keeping the grounds looking beautiful even after a windstorm the night before. We have stayed at a few other properties in the area and no place compares. I could go on and on about SFTS, but go see for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We have stayed in both the Monkey House and Arribas Los Rocas. We loved them both. You really can...

...before we leave the Monkey House's verandah. We spent a lot of time on the verandah/deck of this tree house in the jungle. Listening to the sounds, inhaling the scents, watching the movement in the trees, light on the leaves in the heavy heady tropical heat and air. What a PERFECT place to check out of life for a while...or were we briefly checking in? OK snapping out of my reverie for just a moment to provide the information for which you really researched this site...."SFTS" is an oasis. Small scale and intimate, with big resort information and attention to detail. Daryl and Donna did not miss an angle of anticipatory quirks and logistics one might come across exploring this part of paradise. They can be described as one part efficient host and two parts GREAT people ... definitely what my husband and I seek any where we might stay for more than just a few days. We will definitely make an effort to return for more exploring in this part of Costa Rica and without question put the Shelter from the Storm first priority in our search for accommodation. Thank you, Daryl and Donna!!! Hope to see again very soon!!!

Room Tip: We loved the Monkey House because of where/how its located. The light on the verandah through the...

Just returned from a wonderful trip to the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica which included 4 nights at this fantastic location. This slice of heaven is located just south of Dominical perched on a hillside that provided gorgeous views of the rugged Costa Rican coast. We stayed in the Monkey house which was a perfect fit for my wife and I- listening to the Moody blues on the CD player as we fell asleep at night was awesome! We really enjoyed having a kitchen to prepare some of the local foods with great seafood and locally grown fruits and vegetables to choose from. The grounds, rooms, and pool & bar areas are simply gorgeous and very well maintained with all the rooms blending very well with the environment.Donna and Daryl were the consummate hosts, making sure all our needs were met and making this a truly memorable vacation- the only bad part was having to leave! We sincerely hope to return again some day.

Maybe we're just a wee bit biased (considered this WAS our 3rd visit to the Monkey House), but boy-oh-boy, do we ever LOVE Shelter from the Storm! We honeymooned there in February 2009, then returned again in November 2010 & 2011. Daryl and Donna are just as lovely (if not more so) than you'll read in these reviews, and their little piece of paradise is so idyllic we keep going back for more (frankly, it's our dream to gather a group of our friends & family and rent the entire place)! Even after three visits, there is still so much to do & see, though we are typically lured back to the gorgeous & almost deserted beaches that dot the coastline to play in the surf and take in the fabulous sunsets. Costa Rica is not to be missed, and Daryl & Donna will help you navigate your way through through their neck of the <jungle> woods safely, efficiently and with a good dose of humour!

Room Tip: Forget the GPS...use Daryl & Donna's maps (they are way more accurate).

We were looking for the combination of a rainforest, beach, minimal tourists, and just a pure Costa Rican experience. That's exactly what Daryl and Donna provided us at their beautiful haven. From the first "welcome" margarita to the final goodbye, they were the most accommodating, warm, genuine, friendly, and helpful hosts whose only goal was to make sure we had the best time possible in Costa Rica. We stayed in both the Monkey House, with all of its charm, and also Villa La Cuesta, with its picturesque views. We spent some of our favorite hours at the communal Rancho in the middle of the complex, swinging in the hammocks and taking care of ourselves from the honor bar. Their restaurant and activity recommendations were spot on (eat at Citrus!, sea-kayaking with Dominical Surf Adventures!) and the amount of information and directions they provided helped us to easily get wherever we wanted. We loved 4x4ing to all of the beaches, with Playa Ventanas as an amazing beach amongst many amazing beaches all within a close proximity. But Shelter From the Strom was just the perfect home base for all of our adventures and D&D just made us feel so at home in Costa Rica so quickly. They sent us to the farmer's market in Uvita and also to see the view from Finca de Bavaria just up the road. Wonderful, wonderful hosts and such a fantastic set of Villas. We're planning a return trip already!

Oh, what gracious hosts and the most breathtaking settings you can imagine!!! My husband and I had the absolute best time and really love our stay at Shelter From the Storm. We stayed in Villa La Cuesta, which we agreed has the best porch and view of all of the villas. We were entertained by sloths, toucans, monkeys, the whole crew!! Donna and Daryl are just lovely! They were helpful at suggesting and even arranging a few of our day adventures. They were all a hit from zip lining, white water rafting, horse back riding and even an impromptu tour of a coffee planation. In a word, amazing. We are in the middle of booking our second trip to The Shelter.

There could not be a better place to stay in Costa Rica, thanks to the vision and hard work of Donna and Darryl. They are the most gracious hosts, and every scene at SFTS is picture-perfect. The area people are also incredibly nice. If you're going to Costa Rica, look no further!

Room Tip: The Monkey House, the smallest of the units was perfect for a couple!
