“One of the best B&B's”

We had a super good stay in Drake bay with Pedro & Yami in Casa Horizontes. With love and care prepared tasty local food for breakfast and dinner, a great view from the high terrace overlooking the bay. Maybe one of the best views in Drake Bay. Have seen Macaws, Tucans and Parrots flying flying over and passing us. At night great place to relax. Rooms are not big, but clean and have mosquito nets. Centrally with regards to the town, leaving point for tours. The boats arrive only 100m from Casa Horizontes.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a own bathroom. We had the Tucan room which had a small bathroom and nice view.

First off, I think it's helpful to note that Casa Horizontes does imply a somewhat challenging 200m hike from the base of Drake Bay (challenging especially in the rain), but it is WELL worth it! Set on a hillside with views of the bay, fresh mangoes (in season) and lemons from the garden, beautiful wood detail that they take great pains to maintain in excellent condition, hot water in the showers, spacious rooms... it is clear that this place is very much their pride and joy. Although the house itself is wonderful, it is Yami and Pedro's hospitality that really sets this place apart. Just a few examples of how they went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and pleasant: my group and I (7 of us total) ended up renting out the entire place, including the kitchen, and they provided us with everything we needed (pots, pans, coffee filters, you name it). Although we were cooking for ourselves and not receiving meals, they still welcomed us with fresh fruits and juice when we first arrived and when we returned from our trek to Corcovado national park. Made the beds everyday. When they saw that we did not have rain boots for Corcovado, they brought out a big sack of extra boots for us to borrow during our two days in the park (by the way, in rainy season, these made a HUGE difference in the quality of the experience - hiking boots alone are insufficient unless you want to be soaking wet the whole time). By they way, Pedro and Yami also recommended Elia, Yami's sister, as a guide for the park, and I cannot recommend her more, whether or not you manage to stay at Casa Horizontes. Elia is amazing, so talented and good-sprited, she made our trip unforgettable. All in all, this was the perfect visit to Drake Bay!

Room Tip: The loft room does get pretty warm during the day, but it's adorable and the high-powered fan ta...

This place is amazingly connected with the beautiful nature surrounded by it. Located up on the hill between the jungle trees and pretty ocean view. The hospitality by Yami was beyond words, I was truly overwhelmed!
As a backpacker the price was a little high, but it worth every dime :)

In mid-March, 2014, after a long, hot day of travel we (3 now tired and rather grumpy Canadians) finally reached Drake Bay shortly before sunset via the water taxi from Sierpe which is an adventure all on its own! There to meet us at the beach standing in knee high water with a broad smile and helping hands were Pedro the husband half of the couple who own Casa Horizontes and another local fellow who promptly gathered up as much of our luggage as they could possibly carry and led us up, up, UP the hill to the Casa Horizontes. It was clear from the moment they met us at the beach and then again when Yami (Pedro's wife) warmly greeted us upon our arrival, that this was going to be no ordinary stay. We had the upstairs loft (which gets an excellent cross breeze at night) while the other guest rooms are located off a common area on the main floor and all just off the communal kitchen. It's small, quaint and really has that B&B feel. For those wishing more privacy however, they also have a separate casita which, while we didn't see it, heard was very nice. The most outstanding feature though (as other reviewers have mentioned) is the large covered, but open, front veranda area where excellent home cooked meals are shared together along with freshly squeezed juices and the always wonderful Costa Rican coffee all while looking out over extraordinary Drake Bay. Here on the veranda, hammocks are fought over :) and people from all parts of the world sit and tell tales of their days adventures and get to know each other to form, in many cases, lasting friendships. And all this under the caring and watchful eye of Yami and her staff who do everything possible to ensure you have a wonderful time and all your needs are met, which in our case they certainly succeeded in doing. We stayed 4 nights at the Casa Horizontes and when we left it felt like saying goodbye to family. It may not be for everyone, especially those who might find the steep access to the property from the beach a challenge, but for us it really was like coming home!!

I paid about $80 a night for an ensuite room and then the casita. Accepts credit cards. Hot water showers. Extremely clean rooms. Wonderful owners/managers and staff. (The duena speaks English.) The casita has its own fridge, which is ultra-convenient. Breakfast and dinner included, along with drinking water all day and fruit plates after you return from your tours. Management can set up all your tours. Beautiful view from the common sitting area. Free wifi. Up on a hill, so if you have luggage, you want to arrange for the car to meet you at the beach. If you're in the casita, you'll need your torch at night. No A/C, but powerful fans will keep you cool at night. If you decide to stay here, you'll be just fine...though remember to wear sandals in the boat from Sierpe...

We stayed at Casa Horizontes for 3 nights in March 2013. It was a great stay and we would definitely recommend it to our friends and family.

Things you should know...

1. BRING CASH. There are no ATM's in Drake Bay. If you pay by credit card, they will add a 5% fee (because they are charged a 13% fee by the bank!!). They prefer either US dollars or colones (Costa Rican currency).

2. The view from the balcony is fantastic, both the ocean and the plants/wildlife all around. We saw lots of hummingbirds, parrots, and other birds, plus one large iguana. But worth noting that Casa Horizontes is located on a hill, so there's a bit of a climb to get there (that's the price for the view).

3. The food is great. Yami used to be the head chef at one of the nearby resorts so it's not surprising. For dinner we had lasagna, fish, etc. Breakfast was made to order. Each day when we returned to the casa, she had fresh fruit and juice waiting for us.

4. The hosts are amazing. Pedro and Yami run the place and they both go out of their way to make you feel at home.

In terms of activities, if you want to do the high-rated "Bug Lady" night tour, make sure to book it way in advance. We tried to book it on arrival and had no luck. We ended up taking a different guide for a night tour and it was "meh". We saw some animals but the descriptions/stories were lacking.

We stayed here for 4 nights in February 2014 and had a wonderful time experiencing something very different.
Yami and Pedro could not have been more accommodating and I would give this top marks for their hospitality and kindness. The wonderful balcony where communal meals were eaten was a highlight of the Casa and it was sometimes hard to tear oneself away.
Having said that, the rooms are quite small and our bathroom, though private, was open at the top to the communal bathroom next door, so modesty was not a luxury.
My main concern though, was the access path to the property. This might not be a worry to a lot of people , but being older and not so fit, I found the path very steep and difficult, particularly in the dark, and personally I would have preferred somewhere with easier access to the village.
I do not wish to detract from this property at all though, as for the more nimble of foot, this is a little gem.
