Copa de Arbol is simply incredible. Very remote, which might not be for everyone, but we loved our stay there. Easily the highlight of our two week trip through Costa Rica. The staff is very friendly and if you stay for a few nights (highly recommended) you will get to know everyone on a first name basis.
We took a boat to get there, even though it was raining lightly and the water was a little rough it set the tone that this would not be your typical hotel.
I’m not even sure where to start, but the private cabanas are nicely appointed and very comfortable. Although with all of the great outdoor activities nearby you probably won’t spend much time there.
Highlights included:
- Trip to Corcovado National Park: On the boat ride we saw whales and dolphins.
- At the park we saw a ton of wildlife. It poured, we got drenched, but such is life in a rainforest I suppose. Our guide was great and we ended up doing a night hike with him the next day.
- Nice pool, but small and if there were more than a couple of other people or kids it wouldn’t have been as relaxing. The fresh made daiquiris and coladas were great.
- Easy hikes either way along the shoreline. We walked for a couple of hours and around every bend it seemed there was a pristine and completely empty beach. Gorgeous sunsets and we saw lots of cool birds.
- The monkeys. There was a troop of capuchins that we saw swing through the trees and “raid” the main dining area. We watched from the pool and it was fascinating to watch them “attack” from different angles, run distractions and escape when the staff shooed them away. We also saw them chilling a ¼ mile during one of our beach walks and watched them play with one another for a half hour or so.
- I’m sure I’m forgetting plenty of things, but if you just want to get away from it all and relax surrounded by beach and rainforest Copa de Arbol would be hard to beat.

Opening a hotel in a remote wilderness area is not for the meek or squeamish. Sometimes I think we might be a little crazy to chase a dream like this. It is very difficult to provide the type of service and luxury that we have set out to achieve. Reviews like this one and all the others you can read here, reaffirm our commitment to excellence and provide us the inspiration and reward to continue the Copa De Arbol journey.

Copa De Arbol is a very special place. From the service, to the beautiful grounds, to the food, and to the rooms, this place has it all. Luxury mixed with wildlife.

The service was absolutely amazing. Everyone is so friendly and they really are trying to get to know you and get to know what you like, without being instrusive. Everyone will know your name by the time you leave. The staff went out of there way to make sure we had a great time and gave us great tips for different activities.

The grounds are really spectacular. The pool is beautiful and the beach is also very nice. You can tell they pay great attention to their property. The staff told us about a short hike to some tide pools and a cave. We went and saw some fun little critters out in the waters. The staff also told us where to catch the best sunset. Paddle board out for sunset, SURE! It was amazing. We also caught a few beautiful sunsets from the beach.

The food was great. I never had a bad meal there and as others have stated, they are always willing to accommodate your diet. Need an afternoon snack, no problem. Need something other than is on the menu, no problem. Want to take a bottle of wine to sunset, great idea!! I had a variety of food, from eggs for breakfast, toast with a delicious jam, chicken, meat, fish, etc. etc. Everything was delicious.

The rooms are beautiful and secluded. AC and fans in all rooms. Beautiful hardwood floors. The bathrooms are very nice. We were in Cabina 4, a little set back. I would recommend something a little closer up towards the water so you can hear the ocean, but still, it was very nice. Be prepared to be woken up by howler monkeys! It was quite the experience hearing them and don't worry, its not constant, so you can go back to sleep if you like to sleep in (like me)!

All in all, I would highly recommend Copa De Arbol, mostly for the amazing staff and the beautiful grounds.

Thanks for writing this informative review. The positive feedback is very nice and we really appreciate you bringing up a great point, choosing the right cabin. The way our property is laid out leaves some cabins closer to the water, while others have better jungle views. Our website has detailed videos showing each room inside and out including the view. Photos and videos of our 2 newest cabins, Cacao #3 and Amapola #4, will be up soon. Check them out before booking and if you book early enough there is a good chance to get the room that best suits you. Thanks for choosing Copa and we hope to see you again!!

We stayed at Copa de Arbol at the end of March 2014 and had a fantastic time at this resort. Be prepared to see some incredible wild life. As soon as we were at the resort's beach on the boat transfer, we saw a pod of dolphins that came right up by our boat!

The staff is friendly, helpful and overall superb. They truly make the experience unique and memorable. The guides, Jose and Mauricio, are very knowledgable and truly care about the environment and animals. We took a tour of Corcovado and saw three different types of monkeys, a pair of macaws, two tapirs, a coati, a crocodile, and countless others. On our snorkel tour we found a sea turtle, sharks, several colorful fish and lots of interesting coral. It was amazing! I am very prone to sea sickness and had forgotten my dramamine at home, but luckily Randall had me covered and was able to find some for me. I had no issues on the snorkel trip with the dramamine.

Management goes above and beyond to provide great service. We had a misunderstanding with our travel agent and itinerary while we were there and thought we were leaving a day early but were thrilled when we realized we had an "extra day" at the resort. This was something Copa de Arbol had absolutely nothing to do with, yet they insisted on lining up a couple of very memorable excursions for us and wanted to make sure we were happy, which we were. They do a great job of running this resort.

The food was great. I honestly did not have one bad meal and the staff is happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions. I lost count of how many fresh coconuts we drank while there. Again, the staff in the restaurant are just wonderful.

The cabinas are lovely and well-kept. I really enjoyed the no shoe policy - very relaxing! We were able to hear the ocean while we were falling asleep from ours (#7), which was fantastic.

A few tips if you are concerned about water on your boat: We found that there was sand on the beach, fish in the ocean, and the occasional cloud in the sky.

For anyone not concerned about water droplets finding their way on to your speedboat: Beware of curmudgeon travel reviewers who may never be happy with anything.

This place is amazing. I feel lucky to have been able to stay there. We will be back.

I have to say we all had quite a good time reading this review. It was nice to have someone acknowledge “sand on the beach” and “water droplets on the speedboat” as part of the experience. Beware the crumgrudgeons…words to live by. LOL! Thanks for the kind words and come back soon!!!

This was our third trip to Central America, but our first to this part of Costa Rica. The adventure begins with the puddle jumper flight to the Drake Bay area and then a boat ride down the Sierpe River and along the Pacific coast to reach this unspoiled destination. The staff were welcoming, attentive and knowledgeable. We learned soon enough from the owner Mike that that this resort was the stuff of novels - the dream of a couple of Americans who maybe didn't know just what they were getting into, but somehow created an elegant haven at what seems to be the end of the earth.

The rooms - elevated cabanas of polished hardwood - are wonderfully furnished with Buddhist accents, modern bathrooms, and porches with a canopy view. No shoes here, nor in the spacious open-air restaurant and that was fine with us. The food and drink were pretty sophisticated, especially for a location that is essentially unreachable other than by water.

Perhaps most important was that the staff - including the biologist guides like Mauricio - are there to share their deep knowledge and respect for the rainforest and help travelers find a range of experiences, from snorkeling to local hikes. We took a day-long trip to Corovado National Park, where we saw many species for the first time - anteaters, tapirs and crocodiles among them. After five or six hours of hiking, some down time at our restful resort, some reading and conversation with like-minded travelers made for a balanced and restful retreat in the middle of one of the most ecologically important, biologically diverse and spiritually enriching destinations on the planet.

My partner and I just returned from this one of a kind vacation in the rainforest. From the moment we landed it became clear this was the right place for us. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary and we have traveled all over and wanted something different than the norm. No shoes, no phone, TV, or roads. All you could hear was the ocean and the sounds of the rainforest and it's creatures. We would wake up to the sounds of monkeys and fall asleep to the frogs and insects. It is a very calming place to clear your minds from our busy lives.

The cabins were all different in there own ways each with views, porches, some with hammocks, all with great showers and air conditioning. Beautiful wood interior and exteriors, comfortable bedding, and excellent maid service.

The staff".....what did they not offer to do for us? They were always there when you needed something but did not intrude like some resorts. No high pressure for drinks or trips but they would make special arrangements to meet your personal needs. We spent most of our time hiking the forest trails on our own and they were great with directions and would fix snacks, lunches, or drinks.as needed.

Now the food and servers. Great choices and the waiters were such a big part of the dining experience. How can you not feel special in an open air dining room overlooking the ocean and not wearing shoes. They also on the last night of our stay gave a special anniversary dinner above the dinning room which we had all to ourselves. That was a nice way to end our trip.

The owners of this place were there on hand at all times and you could tell this was not just a business for them but a dream they had spent years developing. They cared about our experience in the paradise they had created. I just want to thank them because that is a rare trait in the world we live in today. We had a small bout of something and they sent someone into town late one evening to get some things to make us feel better. Now you must realize there are no roads so this was really going out of there way. If you are going just make sure you take what you need because this not like home and things are either far away or just not available. Pepto, or whatever you use should be in your suitcase. After that we came home to our family all having the flu so it can happen anywhere. This did not stop us from enjoying our trip and they did more for us than our own families would have.

I'll close by saying thanks to all and if you want an experience all in one place try it! You will see things you may never have the opportunity to be exposed to again. The culture , animals, local food, and the adventure.

J & J, it’s been about a month and a half since your visit and not a day goes by without us thinking of you guys. We were honored that you chose to spend an occasion as special as a 30-year anniversary here at Copa. You guys fit right in day one and became part of the Copa family in record time. Thanks for writing this thoughtful review and the beautiful paintings J M took the time to create and give to the staff. Keely has one hanging up in our tent. We hope to see you again!!!

My wife Linda and I recently returned from four days at Copa de Arbol. The scenery was breathtaking, the ocean was warm, the wildlife was spectacular, and the accommodations were very comfortable with great views. Best of all the staff, especially Randall was outstanding and took care of our every need. The food was absolutely fantastic with a wonderful wait staff led by Orlando. If you want to treat yourself, this is the place to go.

It's been two weeks since we returned home from Costa Rica for the second year in a row. Our first visit left us wanting to see more of this amazing country and this year we wanted to include the Osa Pennisula. Our stay at the Copa de Arbol ended our trip this year reminding us that there are few places like this left to visit and we feel very fortunate to have done so.

The ride down the Sierpe River with the opportunity to see and photograph moneys and caiman, macaws and other birds made my day and was well worth the price already. Then the river opens into the Pacific and Drake Bay giving one the feeling that this will be a different kind of adventure. No... there isn't a boat dock...the landing can be a bit wavy and bumpy and yes...you might get splashed and bit wet, but that's what makes this place unique. And did I forget to mention...no shoes!! No flip flops or sandals in the buildings....check your shoes at the steps of even the restaurant and eat in your bare feet! Take time to notice the wood....really notice the quality and finish. It truly makes sense why you wouldn't want to scuff all that up with gritty sandy shoes. The cabins are comfortable. We loved hearing the ocean in Coco #1 and totally agree that it is nature's sweet lullaby.

This resort is not for everyone. You have to be able to appreciate the work it work it took to create this resort in this particular location and what it takes to keep it running. Having spent part of an afternoon talking with one of the owners, Mike, it became very clear to both my husband and I what challenges there were in building this resort and what challenges there still are. Yes, the electricity occasionally goes out....sure...the Wi-Fi is iffy at times...the menu choices aren't pages long and there isn't a row of shop to spend money in, but when you take the time to stop and think about the fact that just about everything comes in by boat, it's pretty amazing how efficiently this resort runs. All of the staff, from those in the restaurant to the guys doing the grunt work of unloading and loading and holding the boats, make every effort to welcome you and assist in any way they can. Most remember and address you by name which makes you feel pretty special.

We loved this remote place in the Osa Pennisula and feel fortunate to have gotten to experience it. There aren't many places as untouched as this left.

Room Tip: Loved #1 Coco listening to the ocean's lullaby.

This review touches on something that I highly recommend, arriving via the Sierpe River. Nowadays there are several options for accessing Drake Bay. When we first came to this area over twenty years ago, the only access was the hour & 15-minute boat ride down the Sierpe River out into the Pacific and on to Drake Bay. To me, it creates a true feeling of separation from the outside world and is the most adventurous way to start your stay here on the Osa. We all deeply appreciate your recognition of the effort it takes to make this happen and difficulties of providing luxury in the wild. Your satisfaction and enjoyment of the area makes all the effort worthwhile. Thanks for taking the time to share. It’s true Copa De Arbol is not for everyone, but we are glad it was the right place for you!!!
