Stopped after a days driving to Matapalo in the rain. Had dinner and an excellent home cooked meal very fair priced compared to the prices of many of the places on the South Pacific coast that have been purchased by Americans and had their prices doubled. Decided to check the rooms out and their were spotless with AC, internet access and clean showers with hot water and Direct TV. Compared to $200 a night and $150 a person a night on the Matapalo Beaches, this place is a steal. The views of the bay and the valley on the other side are spectacular. We decided to spend the night and head the next day to surf. We were glad we did, we got a free breakfast the next morning. We loved it so much on the way back a few days later everybody from our tripped stopped in for lunch and we had a blast. I hate to recommend Costa Rica because I prefer if people stay away and leave it for us, I would rather see American tourists go to over hyped places like the Bahamas or the Marriott in Jaco Beach. If you love nature and like Tico family hospitality and cooking, that you will love El Mirador. Can you find cheaper places on the OSA, yes. But, you get what you pay for.

If you are looking for a budget option in Drake Bay then you can do better than this. However if you are happy to have a rustic experience for the views then Mirador is a good option. $45pp for three meals is quite good but when your room does not even have electricity and you can pay far less (Cabinas Manolo for example) you may find it doesnt measure up. However, the food was of a good standard, it is a nice spot to relax and read on the balcony (note no hammocks despite pics of them on their website) and we saw capuchins in the trees on the grounds on two days. Note also that their Sirena tour is very expensive compared with others ($95 vs $70 for example). Their other tours are great though - their night tour is with Tracy the Bug Lady and this is fantastic - definitely do it. We thoroughly enjoyed horseriding booked through them too (only $30 for 5 hours).

No frills, very nice location, great view over Drake Bay. Three meals are included in the price and the food is EXCELLENT! Bring some cash with you because they charge you $5 for every item you pay with credit card...

We loved El Mirador Lodge - the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, the tours were great and reasonably priced, and the three meals provided per day were excellent and very filling. I am vegetarian AND have coeliacs disease, and the kitchen staff did their very best to accommodate me by cooking special dishes.

There are a number of cabinas, some are separate, and others share a balcony. Some have electricity, some are provided with candles. We were given a choice, and ended up in a lovely cabin (which could have slept up to 4 people) with electricity and a shared bathroom - but since no one was occupying the other two cabins - we had it to ourselves. The rooms are 'rustic', but very clean and well maintained. Staff were very attentive, giving the bathrooms and rooms a thorough going over everyday, and providing fresh towels in the shape of different birds and animals every day. The only thing that we found rough going was the driveway/track up to the lodge - which was steep and erroded (note: we did stay during the wet season).

The dining area is communal - staff like everyone to sit together to encourage chat - and we met some fantastic fellow travelllers - who helped make our stay one of the highlights of the trip.

El Mirador offers a number of tours, which are apparently some of the cheapest from Bahia Drake to the Corocorvado Ranger Stations, Cano Island etc (we did a guided tour from Puerto Jimenez to Sirena, and found El Mirador's prices very competitive). The guide who accompanied us on two trips, was very knowledgable, spoke excellent excellent english, and was very safety conscious. We saw many animals - humpback whales, dolphins, all four species of monkey, coatie, tapir, iguana, boa constrictor, basilisk, and more.

I'd recommend this lodge to any traveller wanting to get a taste of the wildlife around Corcorvado National Park - you won't be disappointed.

This place is a bit rustic, some of the cabins do not have electricity. There is a big variation in cabins, so be sure to check out a few - some have balconies, some have fans, etc. The food we had was tasty enough and breakfasts and dinners are abundant while lunch is more like a light snack. I would recommend either splurging for a nicer place, or spending less and going in a local place which you will not find advertised on the internet or bringing your tent and camping as most locals seem to do).

We been to Costa Rica a few times and each time we really have a wonder time. But this time we decided to stay at Mirador hotel which is a piece of crap. Our so called room is nothing but a square shack make with tin walls. Raindrops leak through the roof and wetted our beds. There was no lights in the room. There was no RUNNING water (including the bathroom) which was so nasty. We couldn't brush our teeth nor wash our face amongst other things. There was no lights on the stairways to the restaurant. Mosquitos have biten my 5 year old boy over 90 times. We had to rushed him to the hospital the next day. Staying at the Mirador was our WORST experience EVER. If we have to do it all over again, we would choose to sleep in our vehicle rather than to spent a night at the Mirador.
P.S. These thieves got the nerve to charge us $140.00 per night!!!!!

We had a great time at El Mirador. Granted, it was a bit rustic. The food was great, the staff was great and very helpful. It was about as all-inclusive as a backpacker would ever want to get. The view from our porch was beautiful, and there's something really relaxing about falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and crickets.

The tours organized through the hotel were great. We went scuba diving at Cano Island, and saw lots of great things underwater (sharks, rays, lobster, schools of fish) and our way to and from the site (dolphins, and a humpback whale). We did a tour of Corcovado and saw tons of other animals (all 4 types of monkeys, a tapir, crocodiles, toucans, a puma).

My main complaint about the Mirador is the price. We paid $45 per person, which included all our food. Apparently this is how most, if not all, hotels and resorts in Drake Bay operate. But now there is a brand-new hostel in the little town (which was so new, it smelled of paint when we were there.)

We lucked out in getting here, since we usually take buses. But we got a cheap deal with Nature Air, otherwise we probably wouldn't have bothered taking the 8 hour trip from San Jose. But the extra money on the flight was totally worth it. Drake Bay is gorgeous, and El Mirador is a great place to experience it.
