“Stunning spot”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

Spent three nights here in August. From the arrival through the breakers from the Sierpe river, to our return through the mangroves, it was a perfect trip. The view to the bays on either side of the lodge is beautiful, with stunning sunsets, and fireflies light up the grass and trees in the evening. David was very friendly, the food was great, and the kids (16 & 13) loved their afternoon cakes, hammocks & wifi. We did two trips with Gregorio, the brilliant guide - at Cano we saw whales, dolphins, turtles & more fish than I'd expected - parrot fish, angel fish etc. And in Corcovado, sloth, tapir, monkeys galore, scarlet macaw, crocodile, caiman & some seriously scary spiders. Special mention too to Isaac, for some very skilled boatmanship… We enjoyed travelling in the rainy season, quieter, and generally hot and sunny for most of the day before some spectacular, warm, downpours & lightning shows.

Room Tip: The duplex is good for families with a balcony & hammock. The only thing keeping you awake at ni...

We spent 4 days here in august with our 2 daughters aged 9 and 12. The accommodation was simple but comfortable with lots of nice touches. The food was good but the best part was the view across the bay as you sat relaxing with a beer after a days activities. David and the team were very friendly and they were especially accommodating with our "fussy" eater. The trips were great gregorio the guide was knowledgeable, passionate about wildlife and again very patient with the girls. Snorkelling off cano island was a real treat. We saw all sorts of wildlife, more than we ever expected, it was lovely to see the scarlet macaws playing in the trees as we walked across for breakfast. If you are planning a visit to Costa Rica this should be on the "must do" list.

I have been meaning to write this review since we visited Las Caletas in January 2014. We had the good fortune to spend New Year's here and what a wonderful time we had! The owners helped with all of our travel arrangements, which worked perfectly. Although one can arrive by land, the trip down the Sierpe River added to the adventure.
The room we stayed in the Duplex) was very comfortable, with a porch and hammock overlooking the ocean. Not fancy, but clean and homey.
The food was delicious -- home made bread with breakfast, carefully packed lunches for day trips, plentiful delicious food for dinner and a New Year's FEAST.
The other guests came from many different countries and were all interesting in getting to know one another - yet the small total number guests and space to spread afforded quiet and privacy also. We had three teenagers with us and there were some other families with teens also and the kids stayed up late playing cards and singing. I can't stress enough what a comfortable and caring atmosphere they have created here .. The guides on the day trips were informative and thoughtful about the needs and safety of everyone. And, when you have free time, you can walk on miles of beaches, sit in shade and see no one else. Finally, I would like to note that the staff went out of their way - without overdoing it - to show my 18 year old son who has Down syndrome a good time. They noticed what he liked to eat and without asking showed up with a special plate, started up some inside jokes with him that he enjoyed and gave him an extra hand on outings. We tend to like to go to new places when we vacation - there is so much to see! But, this is on the short list of places we will definitely return to.

Room Tip: There are a few different types of accommodates. We found the duplex perfect for a family. There ar...

My husband, my sister and I stayed at Las Caletas in late July. This experience was everything you would want in a relaxing vacation. The accommodations were clean and inviting. The 3 meals a day (included in the price) were outstanding. The hosts, David and Yolanda made sure that every detail was taken care of, from the transfers in and out, which went very smoothly, to arranging day trips for us. The other staff were attentive to all of our needs. Emails exchanged before the trip were answered immediately. We saw monkeys from the porch where we ate breakfast and scarlet macaws flying over head. In addition, their resident guide and biologist, Gregory, accompanied us on three day trips. His vast knowledge of animals and their behavior was astounding. Gregory was able to take us to see sloths, 4 species of monkeys, an anteater, tapirs, crocodiles, alligators, caiman, and a wide variety of bird species. Whales and dolphins were also seen on this trip. There were many day trips available to choose from, but sometimes we just stayed there at the lodge and enjoyed the private beach, the beautiful view from the bluff, or a hike through the jungle into town. In all, I would gladly repeat this vacation in the future. i have traveled quite a bit and this is the second time in 12 years that I have stayed at Las Caletas. Their facilities have been modernized a bit, but their great attention to detail is the same on both occasions.

Room Tip: The duplex is nice, but the walls are thin and you can hear the other occupants next door, but we ha...

If you're looking for the perfect open air tropical rain forest experience Las Caletas may be what you're looking for. The Hosts, David and his wife were most attentive and friendly during me and my wife's six night stay there in the latter half of July. David was a good concierge for off site activities whether it was whale watching, snorkeling, visiting the Corcovado National Park or others.
We woke up to sounds of the the ocean waves, monkeys, critters and tropical birds of all kinds. The food was excellent, breakfast, lunch and dinner which in my opinion easily measured up to food we had at good hotels and restaurants in Europe. And we really enjoyed the cosmopolitan mix of people we dined and had our activities with. The grounds were very well kept.. There is a great view of Drake Bay from the dining area. The climate is a warm and humid, but overall it was a truly great experience.

We spent 4 days at Las Caletas with our 2 children, ages 10 and 12. The food is amazing, the accomodations -- though rustic -- are really, really nice. The location is spectacular; the resort is perched on a cliff overlooking the pacific ocean and an amazing beach. But, best of all, is the staff. The staff creates an amazing sense of community among a diverse mix of hotel guests who come from all over the world and speak any and every language. The staff make sure that every need is met, trips arranged, information provided, in the most respectful and intelligent manner. The on-site naturalist is amazing and always available to answer questions and point out local flora and fauna. My children cried when we left....and we almost did too! If you are looking for a unique vacation in a pristine, remote environment -- and don't mind roughing it a little bit -- you should try Las Caletas.

Room Tip: We stayed in a two floor bungalow unit, which is great for families travelling with older children...

A friend of our recommended Las Caletas after he spent some time teaching at a small school nearby. We loved the lodge, and the jungle atmosphere. The food is amazing here (it better be because you can't go anywhere nearby to get more!) The staff are also so sweet and the sights are unbeatable. We stayed in one of the tents and were very impressed with the cleanliness of it, it was like a luxurious camp out.

The beaches are also barely touched and extremely private. Most of our days there we were the only two people at the beach. Just be careful not to get caught in the undertow or rocks as there are no lifeguards!

The amount of wildlife we saw and the knowledge David shared about the local culture made this a priceless experience. The family style dinner time led us to meet people from all around the world and we actually made great friends with a couple from Switzerland that we still keep in contact with! A great place to stay if you really want to see the Costa Rican jungle but eat like you're at a 5-star resort.

Room Tip: If going with the tent option try to get the one on the platform. It's very private and offers g...
