“Spectacular setting, food excellent, staff need some hospitality retraining”
Reviewed 13 March 2014

We stayed at this hotel for one night in March 2014. The setting on a cliff overlooking the lake and volcanos is spectacular. It is a hike to get from the boat up to the office and then the room, but it was worth it. The room was beautifully decorated with authentic Guatemalan artifacts and had numerous windows overlooking the lake to capture the magic of the spot. The dinner was communal and we met several very interesting people. The food was excellent. Breakfast was served at individual tables and there was a wide range of choices.
The staff was not particularly welcoming when we arrived--something we found to be an anomaly compared to our experiences elsewhere in Guatemala with the exception of Tikal, but their demeanor improved when they were compelled to remove and subsequently repair the door to our room because of a faulty latch system.
Overall, a very good experience.

If you can snag a room at this much coveted hotel then don't even hesitate. My family and I were lucky enough to reserve three nights at this unbelievable hotel and they were three of the most magical nights we have ever had. Making the reservation was very easy since you can do it yourself on their website with pictures and availabilities all layed out in an easy to navigate format.

We knew we were going somewhere lovely when we arrived in Panajachel and upon mention of our stay at Casa del Mundo, people would just smile and say, "you're in for a treat". The hotel is built on the edge of a cliff and everything about it is majestic. Yes, there is a decent hike up to the main office but nothing scary and unmanageable. Plus, there is someone at the dock that may help you with your bags.

The staff was very courteous, kind, and helpful. They answer all questions and have an eye for details. Highly recommend doing dinners at the hotel as they are served family style with everyone sitting together. The environment is ripe for meeting new people and having great conversations. The dinner is delicious too and they always have vegetarian options. There are board and card games that my family and I loved to play after dinner.

The view from every single room is spectacular. The place is really peaceful too. At night time I would step out of my room to hear nothing but the lapping of the waves on the rocks. The moon shone brightly and the sky was littered with stars. I honestly cannot reiterate how magical of a place this is. Probably one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed at.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great and just depend on your budget. We had rooms 7 & 8 which were supposed t...

Recently returned from a stay at Casa del Mundo. The location is wonderful, and the views are amazing! We stayed in Room 13, located directly above the kitchen. The room was very charming and had a small balcony overlooking the Lake with fabulous views! The bed was extremely comfortable (a treat in Guatemala!). We booked the shared hot tub one night and enjoyed the beautiful starry sky and watching the moon rise. Everyone we met at the shared dinner, at breakfast, and in passing, was very friendly. Juan, who works at the main office, was fantastic! Coincidentally, we booked a tour with his father, Domingo (Tornado's Excursions) the day after we checked out. We didn't know it was his dad until we happened to mention to Domingo that we had stayed at Casa del Mundo! Quite the coincidence. We had a great day touring lakeside villages with Domingo, and highly recommend him as a Lake Atitlan tour guide. Everywhere we went, people knew him! He's very warm, friendly, and knowledgeable.
While having breakfast at Casa del Mundo, we met the owner, who wished to make certain we were enjoying our stay. It was a pleasure chatting with him, and we highly recommend Casa del Mundo for a unique vacation experience.
We would love to return!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 13, which was directly above the office/dining area. It met our needs perfectly...

We spent 2 nights at Casa del Mundo and wished we could have stayed longer. The location is picture perfect. It's quiet and away from the buzz of Panajachel, but it is also very easy to get around to the other villages. Pictures on the website really don't do this place justice, and it really needs to be experienced in person. Very peaceful.

Of note, the 'family style' dinners aren't really family style. You sit at the long table with other guests, but everyone has their individual meal. The food is very reasonably priced and delicious. There were a few cases of gastro when we were there, but it's hard to say whether related to the food? The only possible downside is if you prefer something else for dinner. There really aren't other restaurant options, however they will definitely do their best to accommodate dietary restrictions/preferences.A great feature is that they have purified water available at no cost, just make sure you bring a water bottle.

There is no pool, but people seem to have no problem swimming in the lake, although we did not. The waves do pick up a bit in the afternoon, so try to take boats earlier in the day, if you get seasick. Also, this is not a particularly handicap friendly hotel- there are a lot of stairs.

We are definitely planning on going back one day, and spending more time! It really is a one of a kind place, and extremely reasonable priced.

Room Tip: Room 20 was amazing. We initially wanted Rm 12, which was not available, but had no regrets. It'...

Lovely place to come and unwind. The views are spectacular as is the location. Quite a hike up a several sets of stairs but well worth it. Wonderfully quiet at night which was a welcome change coming from Pana & La Antigua. The beautiful rooms are unique in that each one is different from the other. Comfortable beds too! Having our own private balcony was a bonus.
Met the owner - what a wonderful guy. He wanted to make sure we had a great stay.....and we did!
The service was quite good and the staff was very friendly.
I would have preferred individual tables & times for evening dining. However, re: group dining, it was nice to sit & meet with the other guests as well.
I didn't find the food outstanding but you can't please everyone. I understand that the location poses some problems in that regard.

A lot of reviews talk about the great view (I agree that it's truly amazing) but when you look around, there are 30 other hotels with that same view. Casa del Mundo stands out for it's unique setting and atmosphere. Since it's not directly in any "town," there is a feeling of seclusion and peacefulness. The group dinner is an amazing time to get to meet all of the other guests. In my experience here - every guest was like minded in their idea of vacation which made it a true joy to talk with them all.
Definitely visit here - but keep in mind that the seclusion can be tricky. Boats stop their rounds when it gets dark - and it isn't practical to walk anywhere - so you should aim to be back in time for the group dinner.

Room Tip: Every room has it's own charm. I was in room 12 for 2 nights, then when I wanted to add a night...

The view from this hotel was outstanding and it was almost enough to balance some of it short comings. The trip from Pana to the hotel could have been smoother if they would hire a person to watch for guests and get them on boats and parked. It was a hassle to get luggage and car parked and on the right boat. I think for little or no extra cost they could make this easier for the guests. The rooms were nice if you could stay in one for more than two days. I am NOT sure how they do it but they moved a high percentage of guests from room to room when they stayed more than two days. We were moved out of a room and I talked to the people that moved into the room we vacated – they were staying for one day – why did we have to move rooms – the staff was no help. The internet connection was ok at best. You will have to make sure you are “stair worthy” but this is not a detriment to the hotel since they make sure you know that stair climbing is involved. We stayed in a number of hotels in Guatemala and this was the ONLY one that would not take credit cards – and with no ATM on the property it was a mess to coordinate the cash required. They really need to get with it!!! Food at the restaurant was very good and you had to make a decision on dinner at the hotel by 2 in the afternoon with only one item on the menu (actually two with one be vegetarian). Dinner was at 6:30pm so there was little flexibility for dinner. We had a nice time but I believe there are other places on the lake that are better.

Room Tip: Make sure you have done some Stair Stepping before arriving. Also bring plenty of cash to pay your...
