“Dirty and careless”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2013

I've stayed at Casa Rosa last week with my mom. The house is located on a beautiful surrounding, just next to vulcanoes and very close to the lake, like Lagarto verde, Isla verde and many other hotels. The owners are totally careles of the place, that in my opinión is even dangerous: all the wooden especially on the pier is half broken and the way form the public boat Little harbour is quite acrobatic. For a 30y.o. person Works, but i can assure that my mother, even if she's sportie, was confortless there. The rooms are dirty; my linen were dirty, there were thousand of mosquitos and the actitude of the owner and her daughter was far to be nice. Again a dirty and careless place in a beautiful surrounding.

Room Tip: Try to avoid this place, there's a big offer on the lake, just choose any other

We had been staying in a hostel in Antigua, and we were looking for something out of town and away from the backpacker crowd. La Casa Rosa was perfect! Santa Cruz is a 20 minute lancha ride from Panajachel, and it is a very small lakeside village. La Casa Rosa is right on the lake at the bottom of the hill, very near the boat dock and the small road up the hill and into town. Staying there in the end of October, which is the off season in this part of the world, we were the only guests for three of the four nights we were there, and only one other room was filled for the other night. The hotel consists of two detached bungalows, and a larger building with rooms and a dining area. We stayed in one of the rooms, which was clean, comfortable, and had a nice view of the volcanoes across the lake over the very lush garden between the building and the lakeside. The property also has a kitchen, bar, and dining area right on the lake, with comfortable seats for sitting and watching the water while you eat or have a drink. It is quiet and peaceful, and we enjoyed hours of sitting and soaking up the scenery while we ate, chatted with other travelers, read, and enjoyed a glass of wine.

I have to note that this is a five-star review for what this hotel is...a small, family run, inexpensive B&B. If you are looking for an upscale five-star experience, you will not be satisfied. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but not elegant. The gardens are lush, but a bit overgrown. The food is good, but dinner choices consist of basically different forms of spaghetti or Thai curry and rice, which is a bit odd for the region. The owner has a young daughter, and it is obvious that a child lives on the property. None of this is bad, but it is not an upscale resort experience. Also, being there at the end of the down season, things just needed a little bit of spit and polish, which was in the process of being done while we were there, but the place wasn't yet ready for the onset of the high season. And, it's in Guatemala...you will probably find bugs and spiders around, although I don't remember seeing any...but we live in the jungle in Belize, and tend not to even notice them.

If you arrive with appropriate expectations, you will love this place. We did!

We stayed here in Feb 2012, and it was fantastic. We arrived in Santa Cruz and took a wander around, and found this hidden gem. Sipping a drink on the veranda, looking over the lake was amazing, and we checked straight out of our initial accommodation and straight in to Casa Rosa. Our room was basic, but clean and nice, and our host couldn't have been more accommodating.

Whether you want a base to use whilst you discover the other parts of the island, or just want some time to relax and enjoy the view, we would both recommend Casa Rosa. The food is lovely too, and you can sit out over the water on the comfy seats, so there really is no reason to leave.

My family spent 3 days at this beautiful hotel. We have 2 little boys (4 and 2 years old). Initially, we were somewhat concerned about taking them to Lago Atitlan - my wife had visions of losing them in the lake. But once we arrived, we had an awesome time. And the hotel had a lot to do with it.

I agree with jss02002. Set your expectations correctly, and you will enjoy!!!

Casa Rosa must have the best location on the lake. It's really hard to describe with words.
But you can have a meal right by the water with best views of the volcanoes.
At night-time, the place gets super romantic.
We sneaked a few minutes while the kids were asleep to have drinks at the bar.
How sweet that was.....

Rosa, the owner, was very hospitable. Her daughter also works at the hotel, and was super accommodating, especially at mealtime.
Almost forgot to mention, there was a kid's birthday party the day that we arrived. Our kids joined the party courtesy of the hotel, and got a shot at the piñata + free cake and other treats.

We visited a number of places around the lake. Hands down, we like Santa Cruz the best.
It's not crowded. Not too many hippies.

We ate several times at the cooking school/restaurant at the top hill. Yummy!!! Highly recommend it. And it's got great views too.
We took the tuk-tuk up. But usually walked down. Good exercise for the kids.

That's a wrap...

The place has good potential, but unfortunately me and my friends found 3 scorpions and 5 huge spiders in our bedroom. They gave us another bedroom, but we had a very bad time in the middle of the night the light didn't work, and they turn of the internet at midnight at turn it back on at 9:00 am. You can skype or stream videos. Food prices are ok but it's not a place where you'd like to drink lots of beer. Be careful with the taxes. They say it's one price and in the end they charge %22 without letting you know in advance. Letting you know in case you have a tight budget. In the end, we thought the owner was so embarrassed by the whole ituation that she didn't charge for our dinner, but it happens to be that she just sent me an email charging u for that. I guess she will keep insisting. I would go to another place if I were you. The town is not develop, and it's really dark, you can only find little "tiendas" where you can find Coca Cola or Cheetos. It's up to you, maybe we were not lucky that night.

Dear E. and friends,
Thank you for your comments on which I would like to respond as follows.
First of all I wold like to once again apologise for the inconvenience with the insects.
.However, I need too clarify on your comments. You found ants and and spieders in your room but no 3 scorpions! Please take into consideration that one of our main attractions is that we are fortunately located in the midst of a beatiful tropical garden and by nature one must expect insects to show up when you least espect it.
Your reservation was made through booking.com always state net prices and disclose aplicable
VAT separately. Extras like breakfast by the way are also stated if included or not (breackfast is not included. I recommend to check your booking confirmation carefully before divulge publicly erroneous information.
Your comment on food and beer prices in this context really sounds unfair.Idid not charge you
for the breakfast in order to content you and tred to resolve the situation. But I did not offer you a free all-inclusive package. You and your 2 frends did have a dinner and consumed beer, tequila and chocolate. You left without paying or least commenting about it.
In total, the compensation for the incident of the insects is more than fair.
You got free beer, tequila, dinner brekfast and chocolate. Neverthelees, I think that your comment on tripAdvisor is not in all points correct and unfair.
Kind Regards
Rosa Lubia Garcia

From reading the reviews below, I have a simple message: Set your expectations properly and then enjoy!

My girlfriend and I were overwhelmed by the beauty of the location. The garden is lush and beautiful. The view from our room looked directly out on the lake and the volcanos. And the restaurant sits right on the water.

You get this beauty for much cheaper than many of the other options around the lake and in Santa Cruz. Our room with private bathroom had direct views of the volcano for $35 a night. The wifi was free for guests.

As for your expectations, you will not be staying at a five star American hotel. For example, our room was extremely clean, but we had to kill a spider or two. Not too bad, if you ask me.

Rosa is very sweet (she runs the hotel). Her daughter Nicole (runs the restaurant) is a unique personality! She's alot of fun, and you should just enjoy her quirks. You may even get to have a dance party with her and daughter. If you speak Spanish, get to know Paulina, the chef, who is very friendly and can tell you about life in Jaibalito.

We highly recommend the place, unless you expect a five-star hotel for a couple of bucks!

We were very excited to stay in this hotel based on other reviews and the web site. unfortunately we felt mislead once we arrived and realized that it was not the family friendly environment that was claimed. no were for kids to play. we felt like we were being nickel and dimed at ever moment. they charge for everything, even use of the sauna and wifi (by the hour)... the rooms were not kept clean and the drains clogged. If you are trying to have a nice family vacation, do not consider this hotel. It is more of a hostel type dynamic. single travellers may prefer.
