“Tuba Ciy an interesting stopover”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2011

This hotel is nothing special, but we thought the location was an interestng spot. We would have rated this as a three star hotel rather than two star, and the $118 we paid for a standard room (incl breakfast) seemed about right.

The hotel is in the small Navajo town of Tuba City: convenient for us as we were 1/2 way from the Grand Canyon to Monument Valley. The only annoyance here was the panhandlers at the gas station: get yiur gas elsewhere. There is an interestg Navajo Museum right adjacent to the hotel, and displays of the history of the place in the Hotel itself.

The room was just OK. Generous size, clean bathroom that worked, and good old fashioned fittings: hot tap and cold tap. We like that! It looked onto an internal grassed area, pleasant enough and a green change from the rest of Tuba City. Pretty basic furnishings but functional, and good room lighting. Bed was king size and a good night sleep.

Breakfast included was pretty basic, a choice of about three dishes, or $6 per person off the check. That covered about 1/2 what we (two) paid. Others have commented about the service, which was generally slow and perfunctory.

I booked my reservation online. It told me I had till 6:00 p.m. to cancel our reservation. It never said that they don't follow AZ time. The Indian reservation has a different time than AZ. When I called at AZ time 5:15, I was told I was too late to cancel. It was 6:15 in Indian Res. So we stayed at hotel. The next morning, the cook didn't come to cook our free breakfast; I asked for a refund for 2 breakfasts. They would only refund me for one breakfast. I was not happy.

Room Tip: Make sure you know what time it is on the Indian Res. versus AZ.

Travelling as a family, we stopped here for one night between Monument Valley and the North Rim. The location is good, between a restaurant (Hogan) and a museum. The check-in staff were pleasant and efficient and the room (actually a suite) was very good for the price. There were a couple of dodgy characters about while we unpacked (BMX bikes and hoodies) but they disappeared quickly when noticed. Made me feel almost at home...

After finding that the restaurant was actually pretty good, despite the previous bad reviews, we were all set for a good night. The only problem was a family that checked-in to the rooms above ours quite late at night. Their idea of relaxation was to trash the rooms very noisily. The front desk staff were sympathetic but helpless and we lost a couple of hours sleep until the feral family had settled down.

Room Tip: Get one of te upper floors - likely to be quieter

Tuba City is tiny (except for the school) but this Quality Inn is maintained to suprisingly high standards - everything worked & the staff were industrious and helpful. Breakfast was enormous !

We were aware of the very thin walls within an hour of checking in, before anything was unpacked. The people upstairs were running around the room and playing loud heavy metal music. We had an early morning trip to Antelope Canyon planned and wanted a good night sleep. When we asked about a room switch at the front desk, we were told that the only room available was a smoking room, also on the first floor. We went online and immediately booked another room down the street. When we went back to the front desk to return the keys and checkout 15 minutes later the clerk asked why we were leaving. We reminded her of our very noisy upstairs neighbors. She then said that there were other rooms available. Too late, already booked another room somewhere else. What a dump.

We were traveling between Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon, and there is not much to choose from. However, even though this motel could take advantage of that and cut corners, they do not. It's a very pleasant place. Not brand new, and showing a bit of wear, but clean and welcoming. Very pleasant staff; the hotel is owned and operated by the Navajo nation. The hotel is in the center of town, but it's a small town and as a result the hotel is very quiet. TV is not the latest model, but it worked fine, as did the free internet. As others have stated, you get a ticket for breakfast at the adjacent restaurant, which works very well and the breakfast portions are very large. All in all, much better than I expected.

My husband and I along with my elderly parents spent the night here as we were passing through the area. The rooms were a bit shabby (think 1980's decor), the carpet was filthy and the room smelled of cigarette smoke, even though we were on a non-smoking floor. At least the sheets and bathroom were clean! On the plus side, our room had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. There were public use computers for internet access in the lobby.

When checking in you receive a coupon to be used at the hotel's restaurant for breakfast the next day. It allows you to select from several combinations or use the coupon as a credit towards anything on the menu.

The hotel itself is an odd combination of hotel, restaurant, museum, trading post and coffee shop. Very unique, but a bit confusing!
