“A surprising experience (in a good way).”
Reviewed 28 March 2011

I stayed here on a recent trip to Grand Canyon and was very pleasantly surprised. Holiday Inn Express doesn't immediately come to mind when I think of luxury accommodations, plus the hotel's close proximity to Grand Canyon with a constant turnover of hoardes of tourists didn't bolster my expectations.

It wasn't that way at all..

This is a very large hotel and consists of two buildings, the main hotel and a separate annex across the parking lot. I don't know how old the hotel is, but everything seemed fresh and new...the room, the lobby, the common areas, the breakfast room, all of it. I think this was previously operated as a different hotel and my guess is that it was refurbuished when Holiday Inn took over. Access to all rooms is through the interior of the hotel with a magnetic key card.

My two queen-bed room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The furniture, carpeting and window coverings were all in good shape The beds were very comfortable and each came with four pillows two labelled "soft" and two "firm". The towels in the bathroom were generous and the room was equipped with the usual amenities, like toiletries, an ironing board, flat screen TV and remote with a decent selection of popular channels. No movies, but one channel with information about GCNP. The heating/cooling unit was a typical under-window hotel/motel unit and seemed to work quietly and efficiently, but I did not use the AC during my stay. Some rooms had microwaves and small refrigerators. Mine did not.

The breakfast selection was extensive and each building had it's own breakfast area. Besides the usual fare like muffins, cereal, juice and coffee, there were mini cheese omlettes, bacon, waffles, a rather fascinating pancake maker, fruit, bagels, and pastries. It was not gourmet food, but was much heartier fare than most freebie breakfasts, quite satisfying and kept well stocked. Don't delay in getting down to breakfast. The doors close promptly at 9:30 (maybe even 9:28) and they immediately start putting things away.

There is an indoor pool and spa, but I did not take advantage of these facilities. Several other guests did, and the pool area was rather busy on an evening in late March. It could be chaos during the peak tourist season with more families traveling on vacation. I don't know if the second building has it's own pool/spa.

The staff was courteous and efficient and check-in/check-out was quick and hassle free. I paid $117/night plus tax with a AAA discount. My son and his family paid even less for a mini-suite in the other building booked through Priceline. He was as happy with his stay as I was with mine.

The location of the hotel is as close as you can get to Grand Canyon without actually staying inside the park itself. There are several other hotels, restaurants and tourist facilities clustered in the immediate area. The entrance to the park is just 5-6 miles down the road.

The only possible negative is a parking lot that is packed with cars. Disclaimer: I can't imagine any hotel of this size, in this area being problem free during the height of the tourist season, but my stay in late March was quite pleasant and a great value.

My family and friends have stayed at the HIE in Tusayan, AZ twice in the last four years for visits to the Grand Canyon. Overall, this is a mediocre hotel, at best. However, due to the deserved popularity and desolate nature of the area, the few hotels in town have a near monopoly. They are squarely on the demand side of the supply-demand equation.

Pros: Tusayan is in a lovely area. Breakfast offers a wide variety of foods, providing you with enough protein and carbs to start a day of hiking in and around the canyon.

Cons: Hotel rooms really need to be renovated. The 'bathroom' area does not have a door (only a wall separating it from the sink from the sleeping area), but there is a door to the toilet/tub area. This is not the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in. LOTS of families with small kids stay here, meaning LOTS of hallway noise and slamming doors starting as early as 5:30 AM. The breakfast area is large, but way too small for the number of guests. The breakfast staff a very helpful, but struggle to keep up with the sheer volume of people eating at the same time.

I would not recommend staying at this establishment. It is very over priced and mangement takes advantage of last minute booking. When booking online 2 days prior we were quoted an AAA $123.99; upon walking in it was moved up to $159.99. John at the service desk was not understanding or cooperative. His customer service skills could certainly be improved. The room was clean and tidy. I would go back if it were not for the rude customer service and unresonable pricing policy considering we were checking in very late at night it was not fair to jack up the price and judging by the hotel parking not much vacancy. I stayed based solely on the holiday inn brand. But this place denigrates the company brand. Avoid at all costs!

This is not a very good Holiday Inn Express. When I checked in, the staff assigning rooms did not look at my room requests, but after asking the gentleman checking me in, I got at least part of my requests. The room was worn and it had several water-damage stains and rust spots. Some of the previous tenant's garbage was still left in the room as well. The staff is about equally divided with half being very outgoing and are willing to help you and about half of the staff look at you with contempt and do below the bare minimum their job requires. The rooms are NOT worth the rate the hotel asks for them- they are about $75.00 or less rooms, but because of the location, they jack up the price.

We stayed here as part of our route 66 drive from East to West with my 2 kids aged 11 and 3. Booked as part of a tour so unsure of exact price

Firstly this hotel is just outside the national park. This is useful as you can use the free bus to get to the park and viewpoints even up to sunset. You will need a national park entry ticket though.

All the hotels in the village were booked up. The village has a variety of restauarants shops and a huge cinema

We had a standard room which was small but functional. Inlcuded free parking internet and complimentary breakfast. The hotel was packed and breakfast was unbearable, no chairs etc but the food itself was fine - cereals, doughnuts and juices

We used the pool twice. It was quite small but provided a rest from the outdoor heat. free towels and sunbeds. Indoor pool
