“Great base for visiting The Grand Canyon”
Reviewed 16 November 2013

This is a busy, typical Holiday Inn Express with a fabulous location close to the entrance for The Grand Canyon.

We stayed three nights in a room with two queen beds, a small bathroom with an interesting toilet flush that bit you back if you weren't careful, it was so high powered. A table and chairs and hanging space completed the room.

The complimentary buffet breakfast is good considering how busy the hotel is and friendly staff make sure there is plenty for all. I loved the pancake making machine, a better option for me than the usual slow toasters. I'd love one at home!

There's an adequate indoor pool and hot tub, ideal when you've been walking all day. We would definitely stay here again for its location and value for money.

We had an overnight stay in a mini-suite at the HIE, and really loved it. Other reviews had been a bit critical of some aspects of the hotel, so we were a bit concerned before we got there. However, we were allocated a room in the building behind the main building...and it seemed to have a completely different atmosphere to the main building. It was quiet, beautifully furnished in western/cowboy style, and the suite we had wasn't like a hotel at all. It was like we were in an apartment...spacious, separate lounge area, bedroom, mini-kitchen, bathroom etc...all very clean and well maintained. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxed. It was really lovely! And our building had it's own breakfast room too. The hallway leading to the breakfast room was decorated with interesting framed prints of kachinas in keeping with the overall western theme. Breakfast items looked to be the same as those in the main hotel...however, again the atmosphere was quiet and relaxed...and it was very pleasant. The rate we booked was reasonable, and we would definitely recommend the suites part of the hotel, and would stay there again. The hotel was busy when we were there, but checkin and (express) checkout were simple and quick.

Room Tip: Rooms and suites in the building behind the main hotel may be quieter and more relaxed!

Two-night stay during Grand Canyon tourism visit.

On the plus side of the ledger, the staff was friendly, and breakfast in particular was well executed…normally in tourist-oriented locations, and with infrequent travelers almost always terribly inefficient around a buffet of “free food”, breakfast is a terrible experience, but at this property it’s well-laid out and there’s plenty of room to get your food, and the staff keeps it well-replenished. The location's proximity to the Park entrance also can't be beat.

However, on the minus side there are a lot of issues:

(1) In my room at least, the bathroom sink’s water flow was barely a trickle (the shower was OK and commode flush pressure was good, though).

(2) The beds were too soft for my taste

(3) The room temperature was hard to regulate

(4) Inadequate lighting

(5) Access to power outlets was inefficient, an absolute show-stopper in 2013 even at a budget-friendly property like this. Property needs to add power blocks to the nightstand and/or desk (table) areas.

(6) Finally, the ultimate show-stopper: The so-called “high speed internet” performance was ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE both nights I stayed, once again a 2013 show-stopper. I contacted the front desk the second night and asked if any other guests had reported any issues, and the friendly clerk said yes, quite a few had, and that this was “actually very common most evenings…all hotels in this town are on the same internet and if volume gets high and one or two users is hogging up all the bandwidth, everyone suffers.” If that’s the case, I’m glad this was a once-in-a-lifetime visit to this area…Internet’s gotta work, period. If not and this is indeed a property-specific issue, a bandwidth upgrade is needed NOW.

I can’t recommend this property due to too many minuses…and (4), (5), and (6) above overwhelmingly made my stay unpleasant.

Thank you for your candid review of our property, it is greatly appreciated to continue providing excellent customer service. We do and always will respond to guest commentary and are happy to announce that in January 2014 additional power sources will be available in all of our rooms. In as far as the wifi service, all hotels and businesses suffer through poor service as for this remote area, there is only one provider and they have refused to update and our service is contingent to what they are willing to provide us with. We strive to provide our guests with a relaxing and comfortable environment which in turn enables them to return home with remarkable memories of the sights at the Grand Canyon. Sincerely, Elena Villanueva, General Manager

You really can't get closer to the entrance to the park. Overall this is your typical HIE with some highs and lows. The good: great location, indoor pool & hot tub, some updates in the rooms, big breakfast area which is important because this is a busy hotel full of vacationers. The not-so-good: the absolute slowest, most frustrating internet/wi-fi I have ever seen, their DirectTV feed has ads that continually pop up on the screen, and the walls/doors are very thin. I think you can overlook most of the downs if you plan on spending most of your time in the park.

Thank you for your candid review of our property, all commentary are greatly appreciated as they serve as a guideline to provide excellent customer service. Unfortunately in our small community there is only one wifi provider and they have declined to enhance their service leaving all of us with poor access for this remote community. We strive to provide all of our guests a relaxing and comfortable environment that they might return home with remarkable memories of the Grand Canyon. Hoping you will return in the near future and then please do not hesitate to communicate with either the manager on duty or myself, Elena Villanueva, General Manager.

We stayed here for 1 night in November 2013 and asked for a wake up call at 8am once we checked in. They failed to provide. We also asked for 2 extra towels and they never came. In both instances, they lied to us. Very unhappy with the customer service I received at this hotel. The room was very outdated

We stayed here the end of October for one night after a long drive from Vegas. Although the rooms are small they were clean and comfortable. Wifi was useless and not worth trying to log on.The inside pool and spa was a bonus and great fun for our daughter. We found one restaurant open in the village as all the others seem to close soon after 8,30 in the evening. The complimentary breakfast was a mad dash in the morning and also a wait for tables as everyone was rushing to get into the Canyon park. The breakfast itself was basic and eating off plastic plates and cups didn't help.

First, it is just one minute from the entrance to the Grand Canyon. We stayed there one night. It was a typical Holiday Inn Express, everything in the room acceptable. The breakfast is noteworthy for two things: (1) cinnamon buns: an earlier review noted how good these were and THEY WERE!! and (2) the eggs are folded over in a triangle shape; it turns out there is cheese in the middle, which you can't see. They were tasty enough, but if you're allergic to milk/cheese, it will be a surprise. The bacon was crispy and good.

The one thing you MUST do is eat breakfast right at 6:30 a.m. because sunrise in early November is 6:55 a.m. and you MUST be in the Canyon (about a 7 minute drive from the main entrance) no later than 7:00 a.m. because seeing the Canyon fill with sunlight is fantastic!! Thus, we got to breakfast at 6:20 a.m. (10 minutes early) and everything was all set up, but we had to eat fast, so we could check out immediately. There was no minibar or fridge. Did have an ice machine at the end of the hall. Definitely would stay there again.
