“The Grand Hotel is more than grand!”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

The new owners have done a fantastic job of remodeling and updating The Grand Hotel. Beautiful decor, great food, perfect location, friendly staff, lovely rooms with comfortable beds, marble topped furniture.....excellent, excellent, excellent! We also loved the lobby, restaurant and bar areas.

Driving up to the hotel, the hotel looks really nice like a ski chalet and the lobby is not bad and you reach the elevator, it looks like a serve elevator and it only gets worse from there. The suites look old and dingy and the beds are gross and uncomfortable. The pool was under repair so I cannot comment on that, but my expectations are pretty low comparing to the rest of the hotel. The staff is o.k., nothing welcoming or special, they are just doing their job.

Room Tip: Don't take your shoes off. Make sure you have slippers on.

Hotel looks new on the outside, but is dingy inside, old looking. The room is small, little space between the beds and furniture. It lacks a refrigerator and a microwave. There is a large safe and a coffeemaker. The beds were comfortable. There was plenty of hot water, but the hotel was fairly empty. The bar for the shower curtain was bent down which made it difficult to keep it closed. We had breakfast in the restaurant, which was pretty nasty. The glasses our drinks were brought in were filthy on the outside. How the waitress could not feel the grit is beyond my understanding. We asked for new glasses and were told that all the glasses were being rewashed. The replacement glasses were still gritty. The waitress had two tables to take care of as the restaurant was empty but we had to hunt her down for the check. She simply vanished. The food was mediocre. There is only one elevator which is really inconvenient, even when the hotel is fairly empty. I cannot imagine staying at this hotel during the high season. It must be chaos. I chose this hotel for the indoor pool for my son who loves to swim. The hotel website stated that the pool would be available when we arrived as renovations would be completed by then, but the pool was still being renovated. If I had known that I would have stayed elsewhere. The hotel is very convenient to the Grand Canyon. That is the only positive comment I can make about it.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else....

This hotel is nice, lobby is beautiful, rooms are clean and large, staff is helpful and price was very reasonable. However the front desk staff would not clean up the trash right in front of the front door for over 1 1/2 hours!! Thus all the guest (mostly from other countries) were greeted with trash spread all over the main entrance. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk staff, the response was we are trying to get the maintenance crew! One of them could have picked up the trash (mostly paper see attached photo) in less then 4 minutes! A disgusting attitude and lack of pride in the hotel they work for!

We arrived to the hotel to be greeted by indifferent reception staff and it went downhill from there. The rooms are small look dirty the linen is old and torn the beds are uncomfortable. The room was so cold when we arrived and safe was not working we were offered another room but it was even smaller with a horrible view of a washing line. The hallway leading to our room had boarded up windows and doors very fetching!!!!! The swimming pool was closed due to maintenance work and had been for quite a while. The food in the restaurant in the evening was ok but the breakfast if you like your eggs served cold no butter on your toast and surly service this is the place for you. Please stay away from this hotel spend your money at a decent hotel nothing grand about except the name. We actually booked ourselves out after less than one day (should have been there for 3 nights)and rebooked in the El Tover which is owed by the same group apparently what a difference fantastic stay views to die for at Grand Canyon and the food and service fantastic I would really recommend this hotel and eat at the Arizona restaurant. We booked the Grand Hotel through Virgin Holidays please do not let them book you this hotel.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us. We would like to apologize that you found us at less than our best during your stay. During off-peak months in Winter, we try to take care of renovations as quickly as possible with minimal impact on our guests. We can assure you The Grand Hotel will be back to looking presentable by Spring, and hope you'll think of us for your next Grand Canyon vacation.

Overall, the condition of the room wasn't bad, the beds were horrible - we had 2 queens, one was as a hard as a rock, the other was so old you just sunk in the middle. The linens were old, stretched out and had pilling all over,. very uncomfortable. There was room for a refrigerator and microwave, but non were in the room. They should include that in an upgrade.

We were fortunate to have a small patio attached to our room, it had a porch light that could not be turned off or on, it was a light sensored fixture. The light was annoying if you wanted to have the curtains open at night, or sit out on the patio at night, but the light just glared.

The restaurant was over priced, dinner was okay, but forget about having a fresh breakfast there, everything is just microwaved from a frozen box and you pay an arm and a leg for it, and potatoes seem to be cold on everyone's plate. Very disappointing. Service was SLOW for Breakfast, we waited almost 15 minutes to get our check, our server was no where to be found. A gal that cleaned the tables took our check and hunted down our server.

We opted to stay at The Grand instead of the Holiday Inn Express across the street - we thought for the 2 dollars more a night, the bar and restaurant would be worth it, we decided, if we came back to visit the Grand Canyon and cant get accommodations inside the village, we would stay at the Holiday Inn Express, we would at least have a Microwave and Refrigerator to help ease the cost of meals

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us. As Xanterra Parks & Resorts has just taken ownership of this Hotel, bringing it up to our standards is our top priority. Renovating the guest rooms will happen this year for sure, as we wanted to make sure our lobby and pool projects were taken care of before Spring. We hope you'll think of us again for your next Grand Canyon vacation.

We needed to change room 3 times because things were not working. One of the rooms was freezing cold. No indoor pool which was the reason for chosing this hotel (children). No compensation or apologize for our inconvenience.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We apologize that you found us less than our best during your recent stay. Xanterra Parks & Resorts only recently took possession of The Grand Hotel, and we wanted to make sure we started renovations to bring the property up to our standards right away. This included a complete remodel of our indoor swimming pool and hot tub during off-peak Winter months. We apologize again for the inconvenience, and hope you'll consider us for your next Grand Canyon vacation.
