“Nice Lobby, best hotel in Tusayan”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2014

I wasn't able to book a hotel inside the Grand Canyon park. Looking at the options, the Grand looked like the nicest hotel nearby. There are very few choices in Tusayan and the Grand is definitely the best of the alternatives. The rooms need to be renovated, but it was a good 3-star hotel. Lobby and restaurant are nice. There is a small indoor pool for the kids and its only about a 10 minute drive to the Canyon.

What ever you do, DO NOT eat at McDonalds next to the hotel. Its double what you'd pay elsewhere. $40 for 2 adults and 2 kids. We'd be better off eating at the hotel. They have a sign saying the prices are high because they need to provide housing to employees ,yet the Wendy's across the street all has normal prices.

Over priced for everything, which was nothing. Front desk people were rude, like it was an imposition that we came in. Room was nothing but a Budget motel room, but at least you get three towels at Budget. Rooms were dusty and falling apart. Ice machines didn't work. Canyon star restaurant was over priced. $10 for a Guinness wow!! No crackers for soup, didnt even get asked if we wanted bread. Bring a wad of cash if you go there!!!!

The location is convenient and that's about all that can be said for this hotel. If you can stay in any of the lodges or hotels in the park then do.The reception staff were all charming and very helpful, I wish the same could be said for the restaurant staff. The service was so poor for breakfast that we were not charged. The food is over priced and very average. The rooms are functional and none has a view. The rooms at the front face the road the rooms at the back a retaining wall. The pool is indoor and very small. We cancelled our second night to stay at the ElTovar, same price, inside the park with a restaurant that serves appreciably better food at similar prices.

Room Tip: None of the rooms has a view.

Waste of money, Horrible service, horrible rooms, small, boring, ugly, disgusting, the best thing about this hotel is the fitness room, and the fitness room sucks. Average restaurant, gross pool, hallway rug is old worn out and disgusting. Don't be fooled by the pictures they show to get you to stay here. Your better off at Holiday Inn, Holiday INN is Definitely 20 times better.

Dinner service at the Canyon Star Restaurant was pathetic. A person came over w bread and water shortly after being seated and said exactly that "bread and water" - no other comment, and walked off. A server came by a few minutes later to apologize for the wait. She said 1 server hadn't shown up so they were struggling. Plenty of staff moving around the restaurant looking around but helping the servers take orders, get refills etc. apparently wasn't in their job description. It took an hour to get served food. The food was ok once we got it. The live entertainment was also pathetic but given where the hotel is maybe there aren't many options.

Upon arrival, the front desk lady was non personable and non welcoming. We were checked into room #218, a king standard room. As we walked in the first thing we noticed was that the carpet was torn up and frayed. The bed side lamps and alarm clock were not plugged in but we figured "okay, maybe some details were overlooked". As we set up our bags to get comfortable, we noticed a few more things... the carpets were also not vacuumed (there were eaten sunflower seed shells under the bedside tables) and the side chair had a half inch of dust, feathers and other debris on the seat cushions. It was obvious that the hotel was not concerned with cleanliness at this point, but still we thought, we'll wear socks and only sit on the bed. We can work around this. We pulled down the comforter and flat sheet so we would have a clean place to get comfortable and settle in...inside the bed sheets we found several long black strands of hair on the pillows and a few short black body hairs in the bed. There was also some unidentifiable crumbs/crud in the bed as well. The sheets had not been cleaned from the previous tenants, ewe! Still trying to make the best of it, we called the front desk to see if housekeeping could come and change the sheets. They said "no problem" so we went down to the hotel restaurant to grab a cocktail and a light bite before bed. The food and service in the restaurant were terrible. DO NOT waste your money here! Water glasses had food stuck in them, bread was so hard it was inedible, caesar salad tasted like it had grains of sand sprinkled on it, the swordfish had a huge vein running through the center and was served raw in the middle. Maybe the hotel and adjoining restaurant were just having a bad night??? We were exhausted and just wanted to get some sleep. When we returned to the room, it looked like housekeeping was angry about our request. The lampshades were knocked sideways and almost falling off. The bed had been remade but this time the comforter was not covered with a duvet or linens, it was fully exposed. And again when we pulled down the sheets there was more body hair on the pillows and inside the bed. There is no excuse for this. It is just dirty and unsanitary. It was around 11pm and we had been driving all day. We are in the process of moving/driving across country. We figured we would just go grab a set of our own bed sheets out of the truck and put them on the bed. I was going to take a shower while my husband ran out to the truck and that is when I noticed that the shower had not been cleaned either. There was more body hair in the tub and on shower walls. We went to the front desk and checked out immediately. This place should be shut down. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for exposing travelers to unhygienic and unhealthy accommodations. We would not stay here if it were free!

The only good thing about staying at this hotel was it had a Guest Laundry. Apart from that, I can't think of anything nice to say. The carpet was dirty and worn, towels were threadbare, bedding was in need of replacement, and staff looked bored.
