“Fun, memorable experience for the whole family!”
Reviewed 3 January 2010

Our family of 4, including a 13 year old girl and 10 year old boy enjoyed a fabulous 3 day/2night stay at Rancho de Los Caballeros, during a trip to the Phoenix area. We are not experienced riders and it was our first dude ranch experience.

Service: Booking by phone was easy, quick and pleasant. Front desk staff was informative and friendly and the young servers were extremely nice. Overall, it was a bit more upscale than we would have expected from a dude ranch, but it was a good introduction to this type of vacation; the atmosphere was low key and relaxed and many guests were repeat visitors. Our children had an opportunity to meet new friends at the kids camp or hanging around the pool table.

Rooms: We were upgraded to a newly renovated Maricopa Suite, which included a separate bedroom with a king bed, a pull-down Murphy bed for the kids, a kitchen, fireplace and large bathroom with jacuzzi tub and separate shower. The suite was very close to the amenities. Some guest rooms appear to be a good walk away, but the grounds and scenery are lovely, and some have the benefit of being able to see the horse run mornings and evenings.

Activities: There were numerous activities in addition to riding ( tennis, skeet/trap shooting, golf, a swimming pool, natures rides etc.) listed in a weekly flyer and daily near the front desk. Some at an additional cost. The number of things to do was a bit overwhelming. During our short stay our family enjoyed the 2 hour morning trail ride and 1-1/2 hour afternoon family ride. One can chose walk, walk/trot or a loping (canter) ride, and the actual trail rides differed based on the wrangler- lots of climbing on the desert hills or a flatter ride in the valley. The horses are tacked up for you, you just show up and hop on. The horses were well trained, gentle and obedient and the wranglers were focused both on fun and on safety. I felt very comfortable letting my 10 year son who has never ridden, ride off with the kids wrangler. Also, we arranged with the hotel to be driven (complementary ride) to a nearby trail head for a 2 hour hike up Vulture Peak.

Food/Bar: The meals were great: a buffet at breakfast and lunch eaten on the pool patio or in a sunny room overlooking the pool, and a sit down dinner (jackets required for men.) Good variety of dishes at all meals, some unique, certainly something for everyone, even a children's menu. The bar had a gorgeous view of the mountains in the distance, a nice fireplace and live pre-dinner music nightly during our short stay. No kids in the bar though, understandably, but families could sit nearby to hear the music.

The convenient location, just over one hour from Phoenix, and a few hours from Sedona was a bonus for us. We hope to go back one day.

Visited recently for four days. Stayed in a southwestern themed room complete with king bed, gas fireplace, window seat, dining area, kitchenette (sink, coffee maker, microwave, stocked mini fridge), full bathroom (Neutrogena and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries) and balcony.

PROS:
Shower water pressure was excellent. Everything, including landscaping, is well kept. All meals were included in the nightly rate -- food quality was above average to excellent. Extra credit to them for always having a vegetarian option on every menu!! Breakfast and lunch were full buffets (everything from cereal to yogurt, to waffles/pancakes/french toast and an omlette station; full salad bar and sandwiches to 2-3 hot options). Dinner was an option of dining in the on property restaurant (food was great) or campfire cookout (ribs, chicken, burgers, salads, vegetable kabobs, chilli, s'mores, etc.) which was so much fun too.

On property is a lovely golf course (and clubhouse), two tennis courts, a small playground for kids, a pool adjacent to the breakfast/lunch area and bar, a three machine fitness room and a spa. Spa treatments were great, did not use the rest personally. They have a pool table, a room full of photo albums of people visiting the ranch from several decades back and a single computer in a small room off of the reception area for free internet access. They have many seating areas for reading, playing cards or board games or just for sitting beside the fire.

The reception staff and corral staff were top notch - everyone was very accomodating and friendly. The horses were great and well cared for (a shout out to my favorite Boysen Berry!). They even provided free rides into town (about four miles away) and pick up when you were ready. There were activities available like horseback riding, team penning, skeet shooting, nature hikes, astronomy, roping, etc. Horse run (AM - horses go to work, PM - horses go to pasture for the night) is nice to watch.

CONS:
The signage and/or the numbers on the rooms around the property need to be much larger - we were lost the first day. No sauna or steam rooms at the spa. The lounge chairs around the pool have zero shade - only the tables and chairs next to the breakfast/lunch area have umbrellas. Lunch is available for only one hour, why??? Breakfast is served for 2 1/2 hours and dinner is served for three, I think.

TOWN OF WICKENBURG, AZ:
VERY small town. You won't be happy if you're looking for a nightlife scene. Loved the large variety of souvenirs and the friendly owners at The Old Livery Mercantile. Really good Mexican food at Anita's Cocina where all the locals go. Chapparelle's Ice Cream was very good.

Over the past several years my wife and I have taken our 10 and 7 year old boys on many vacations. We have loved ski trips to the Rockies and Tremblant as well as cruises and resort trips to the Ritz in the Carribean. This year we wanted something new. We got it in Arizona.

We booked this trip somewhat "blind". I found some helpful insights but many reviews were mixed. When we arrived my kids got out of the rental car and expressed concern that the facility didn't look like our other vacations. As time went by, however, their opinions changed.

The staff was exceptional. From the wranglers to the housekeeping, the front desk to the wait staff everyone was professional and seemed happy to help. The kids mornings started with Allysa at 8am. She would get them to breakfast and get them ready for their rides. By 930am they were out on the range with their special kids wrangler. Upon returning back at the ranch they could stay with the kids "club" or go with mom and dad. The afternoon was more riding or swimming, tennis and golf.

The food was very good. Yes, I have had better but as an "all-inclusive" it was simply the best I have experienced. Chef Rosa made a special Sonoran recipe every night. The beef from Harris ranch was great as were the Italian and seafood dishes.

I am sure you will enjoy this resort. Don't expect the Ritz and you will be happy. This is a real ranch in the middle of the dessert. It represents a real Arizona experience in the best way possible. On a horse and at an old-fashioned ranch. If I can relate one further recommendation, it comes from my kids. They want to come back every year. Skiing is great and the beach is super, but they look forward to coming back to ride "their" horses Tool Time and Wooley.

See you next year.

Frank

When reading about Rancho de Los Caballeros online, I was very excited about planning a 2-day stay for my husband and me. Quoted in the guest ranch description was "an evening campfire" and "music/singing at the bar each evening. " Unfortunately, there was no campfire and there was no guest performer at the bar either night. Also, there was not a "welcoming environment" as portrayed on the website. Folks at the front desk and the restaurant were rather indifferent, not very welcoming at all. A positive note was the horse-back riding and the ranch hands. We did take a morning ride, and we found those 2 hours to be very pleasant. I am glad that we only booked for 2 nights -- we were very much ready to head to Sedona to an excellent B&B - Canyon Villa. I do wish your first experience at a guest ranch would have been better, but you never know until you give an experience a try. I do know that we will not visit this guest ranch again any time soon.

  • Liked — Horseback Riding and Ranch Hand staff
  • Disliked — Advertising ammenities that were not provided - music in the bar, campfire in the evenings
