“Good Hiking Trail”
Review of Vulture Peak Trail

Vulture Peak Trail
Reviewed 11 April 2013

Beautiful views and a good work out. Vulture Peak Trail meanders through Sonoran Desert landscapes, with saguaro, ocotillo, cholla, barrels, hedgehogs and such. From the base to the saddle is about 2 miles of steep trails. you will be rewarded with dramatic scenic vistas of rugged desert mountain ranges and valleys in all directions. If you are in good shape you may want to try to scramble to the top, there is no maintained trail so care is needed. The wickenburg wilderness also has a great number of rattle snake then any area I have ever been in in Arizona so be caution once the warm month set in. They are usually out between April to September.
It is a good work out.

A little hard to find-turn where the sign says Vulture's Peak .5 miles. We thought it meant go another .5 miles but that's where you turn and can park. Also, GO EARLY or you will be too hot. We left at 5:30 am and made it to the top in an hour. It takes about an hour or so to get down too but if you go early you will be in the shade the whole time. We were back for breakfast by 8:30am Don't miss this one. It will be a great experience. Not for young children or elderly. I was huffing an puffing but I also haven't really exercised for a year. It wasn't an "easy" hike. I would rate it difficult. We did have some kids on our hike and they were way ahead of us and didn't seem to be to affected. They ranged in age from 10-15 yrs old. The people that went with us said their kids have been doing it since they were 7 yrs old. Excellent. Best and most exciting hike I have ever experienced.

We did the hike about 10 am in March, a great temperature. There is outdoor facilities, no water at the start of the trail. The hike starts off easy, quite flat, through little forests of teddy bear cacti. After about a mile (end of the 4 wheel drive trail) the hike becomes a more difficult hike up to the saddle. Not to strenuous, but a little steeper with a few switchbacks. Great view from the saddleback. I continued onto the top of Vulture Peak. It is about 250 meters from the saddle but the trail is not maintained and is very steep in places, you are climbing up rock faces in a couple of spots. Doable, but steep. The view from the top is 360 degrees, whereas from the saddle two peaks block a part of the view. At the top is a book to sign your name and a special message from the Wickenberg Chamber of Commerce.

Great hike, plan on about 3 hours.

If you love saguaros and chollas and hedgehog cactus and pancake prickly pears and occotillos and sand and warmth and solitude, you'll love this hike. Go as far as you wish, hang out.

Hike was well worth it, views are spectacular from the saddle. Tough hike the last 1/4 mile. Take plenty of water!
