Waidroka Bay Resort has great potential. We had visited this resort several years ago when the resort was owned by Americans. While it is a budget resort, it was a great place for divers and surfers. We had our son, a surfer, and he absolutely had the best time. We dived, he surfed, and we had a great one week stay. Unfortunately, things have changed. The American owners sold the resort, I think a year ago. The place is not up to par. Towels and linens are not changed with any regularity, rooms are not swept. I am surprised to read the positive reviews, and question the validity of these reviews, unless we hit it at a very bad week. Surfers are no longer catered to - the owners were not willing to get up early to supply breakfast before the surfers left. There were several surfers at the resort when we were there besides my son, and they were given a bag of cookies to last them through the whole day surfing! Manytimes the owners did not want to bother organizing surf trips, even though people had booked the week to go surfing. We were very discouraged, and disappointed to travel all the way from the US to find that we were treated as minor annoyances. As far as the activities another reviewer wrote about, we found zero. Yes, they had a kayak, but when we asked to use them, they said "no, you won't get back in time before low tide" and we had 4 hours before the tides were low! It just seemed like they didn't want to bother with guests, and were definitely not qualified for the hospitality business. The food was not just fair, it was poor. Menu was limited to mostly fried, greasy foods, ans spaghetti that was stuck together in a giant climp. Plus, the food was overpriced for what you got. Being so far off the main road, you had no other option than to eat, sleep and drink right on site. We will not be returning, and are just glad that we've stayed elsewhere in Fiji so we know how good it really can be.

Arrived at Waidroka with my girlfriend late at night. We went to our Bure which was nice and clean but didn't know what to expect the next morning. Were we in for a surprise.
Woke up early with sunrise, beautiful sunshinen hot, almost no wind.
My girlfriend slept in an I went on a boat trip to Frigates after a fast breakfast. Frigates was pumping! Beautiful wave, about 100m long, and only 10 guys surfing! We had about 8-10ft swell, a bit more than I could handle easily on my first day.
Returned tired and hungry but with a big smile on my face. Met a nice crowed at the resort, my girlfriend mostly stayed and read books. I had 4 more great surfing days including Pipe before the swell dropped. Went on a rafting tour on the last day and returned home. So far the best surf vacation I had in Fiji.

We went to Fiji to get away from it all; sample Fijian life, wonderful beaches, swimming etc. Sadly after 2 and half hours of driving from Nadi Airport we arrived at the Resort (which we feel is mis-named). Our chauffeur and local staff were friendly and the bure we had as our base was clean and welcoming; however the 'resort' itself only lends itself only to divers and surfers (which I agree it does advertise this fact) - not to swimmers, sunbathing on the beach etc. The tide is so far out for most of the day and there is no sand. We were so disappointed that after one night we moved back to Nadi because we did not want our image of Fiji to be destroyed and it wasnt at our new resort.

When arriving in Fiji at Waidroka Bay Resort, the first sight was what sold me into the resort, which is totally secluded in the beautiful rainforest right on the edge of the ocean and Viti Levu's Coral Coast. The beautiful setting, together with a fresh water spring going through the resort into the Ocean and the resorts activities and atmosphere made such a difference to me in terms of meeting my expectations, which where totally fullfilled. I loved the people running the resort and the personal touch in all of the resorts operation. The sea is stunning and the surfing, diving, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking and trips to either secluded beaches or inland are definatley spot on, giving me a real value to my first Pacific Island visit.

I'd return there anytime and as a matter of fact have already contacted the owners of waidroka Bay to re-schedule a trip with many of my friends to come back as a group in 2005.
