A Jewel

We found La Posada on a trip to Winslow, Arizona. There is little to this town if you are not a fan of the Eagles song “Take it Easy”. That is until we came across the entrance of La Posada Hotel. Walking through the sculptured gardens (filled with sculptures and flowering plants) we are welcomed by Jolly the camel sculpture standing outside the front gate.

The La Posada is a historically restored hotel from an era we all would love to have experienced. It is updated with modern conveniences for the comfort of their guests. The walls of the vast rooms are covered with artwork, many by Tina Mion who, along with her husband and two Parti Poodles own and reside in the Hotel. The rooms are filled with artwork and antiques. Huge reading rooms overlooking the gardens invite guests for lounging and reading. There really is no reason to leave the hotel grounds.

Tina Mion is a world-class artist. We bought one of her prints and since she was home that day we actually got to meet her and have her sign the print.

The hotel also has one of the finest restaurants you will ever dine in, The Turquoise Room.

This is a National treasure and should make it to your destination list. We have stayed here 3 times and will go out of our way to stay a night or two.

Room Tip: Many famous people have stayed at this hotel. Pick a room named after you favorite celebrity or hist...

Very easy to find and very friendly staff. The best part is the charm and feel of this place. All is old Mexican architecture and style. Vivid colors and paintings. Room furnishings are rustic but very comfy and very attractive. Also very clean. The building has a very interesting history. Incredible value. One of the most unique and wonderful stops for us in the USA.

This hotel is fantastic. We stayed in a small room, but didn't feel cramped. The public spaces are awesome-we enjoyed sitting by the fire with a book and an ipad! We felt like we stepped back in time to a gentler era. We look forward to returning in warmer weather to that we can enjoy the grounds! The self-guided tour is great-I recommend watching the documentary first-it's a bit long, but the insight into the grounds was helpful while touring the hotel.
If you are a family with small children, please wait a few years before visiting this hotel, or leave the children with Grandma! The hotel is not the best place for little ones-there is no playground or pool and it's not fair to expect them to be quiet in the public area. Little voices carry a bit too well in big spaces!

We just returned from staying at La Posada (something we've done each year). We enjoyed the architecture of Mary Colter, the amazing art of Tina Mion, and as an added treat, the wonderful live music by guitarist Khent Anantakai.

Unfortunately, this time the Turquoise Room restaurant not simply up to the quality of the hotel (its the reason we rated things 3 instead of 5 stars). We've stayed at La Posada each year for the past 5 years and the Turquoise room food had always been wonderful in the past. However, this trip both the food and the service were very poor. It was the low point of our three week trip thru many 4+ star restaurants throughout the southwestern US.

If going to Petrified Forest NP and Painted Desert NP, or just spending a night along this lengthy interstate, it is highly adviseable to stay at La Posada (Winslow). Other reviews did the justice already.

We try to get back to La Posada every year if we possibly can. This inn has so much character, with beautiful rooms at reasonable prices. Each room is unique and named for someone famous. This year for our Thanksgiving trip, we stayed in the Howard Hughes room, which had a gas fireplace and a whirlpool tub. So pretty! There is interesting art throughout the hotel, much of it done by resident surrealist artist, Tina Mion. The Turquoise Room restaurant is one of the most compelling draws for us, and we had five meals in two days there during our recent stay. A bit off the beaten path, but well worth the detour!

Room Tip: Descriptions and photos are posted on the website for many of the rooms, so be sure to take a look.

Thanks to La Posada there is a major reason to include Winslow, AZ on your itinerary because staying here is unique. The hotel is beautifully and lovingly restored, with great warmth and tranquility. Beautiful antiques, artworks in oil, pierced tinwork, sculptures and artifacts are combined to enhance Mary Colter's seemingly endless views through arches, hallways, next levels. No matter where you stand you see spaces and things begging to be explored and admired. Gardens are gorgeous in the summer and you are reminded of La Posada's days as a railroad hotel by the stream of trains passing very frequently on the busy Santa Fe line. The owners' vision and passion for this lovely old place shines through and it is one of those places where you linger and linger, never wanting the experience to be ended with checking out. There are not a lot of staff but they work very hard to make the stay wonderful.

Room Tip: If you like trains ask for a room overlooking the tracks. If you like gardens ask for a room overlo...
