We stayed in the Jimmy Stewart room. This hotel embraces its elegant past and celebrates the oresent. If you are out to experience the past taking a fide on Route 66 then you have to stay at La Posada to experience the hayday of our railroads.

I've made many cross country trips between Colorado and California. Whenever I take I-40 through the Grand Canyon area, I stay at La Posada. I discovered this hotel over a dozen years ago when the owners were in the process of restoring the guest rooms. The hotel was designed by architect and interior designer Mary Coulter, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright. She also designed many of the Fred Harvey gift shops and other buildings at the Grand Canyon. With this hotel she imagined a hacienda inhabited by a family and selected design ideas and materials in keeping with the local environment. The result is a building that brims with authenticity, from the floor tiles to the beamed ceilings.

Each guest room is decorated uniquely, but in keeping with the Spanish/Southwest theme. Comfortable beds, historical architectural drawings and vintage photos, windows that open to breathe in the fresh air and sounds of the passing trains make you feel like you've entered another era.

Hotel staff is friendly and helpful. One suggestion, though. It would be helpful to have a bellman to help with luggage. There is no elevator and navigating the charming staircase to the second floor can be daunting, especially for older travelers.

The Turquoise Room offers superb, inventive cuisine featuring locally-sourced meats and produce. If you don't plan to stay at the hotel, you must stop in for a meal. You will be delighted.

The gift shop has many hand-crafted items, some local and some from Mexico. Plan to spend some time there for souvenirs and special occasion gifts.

La Posada is truly an oasis in the desert, well worth the stop whether staying overnight, dining or just looking around.

Room Tip: Check their website for room locations. I prefer to stay in rooms that look onto the inner courtyard...

La Posada is certainly the best reason to go to Winslow. Built as a railroad hotel the design is faux-Spanish hacienda. It has been lovingly restored and is surrounded by gardens, filled inside and out with eclectic art and furniture. Each room is unique, very comfortable, but you'll want to spend time in the many public spaces: grand halls, ballroom, art gallery, and gardens. The restaurant is superb. It's a wonderful getaway in an otherwise bleak hotel scene.

I stayed at La Posada for a night when I was driving from Oklahoma to California. I was pleased to have found such a beautiful place to relax and recharge after a long day of driving. The hotel was gorgeous. It had about a thousand different places to sit and read a book or hang out in. There is a definite historic charm to La Posada that is just lovely. There is also an array of art hanging throughout the hotel. I took a few walks outside on the hotel grounds, which were bursting with flowers. My room was very nice. It even had a balcony, which was a great feature. My only complaint was that the train could be rather loud at times. I definitely recommend dining at the restaurant if you have a chance. The food was delicious! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at La Posada, and will hopefully be able to stay there again in the future.

We found this hotel by accident and only stopped off for a quick drink while heading on Route 66 back to Los Angeles but when we saw the inside and tried their margaritas we decided to stay.
The hotel was originally a "Fred Harvey" railway hotel and was left in neglect when the new owner found it and renovated it to its original state. Many hollywood stars and famous people like Einstein stayed there. The turquoise restaurant served one of the best meals I had had in the States, and the staff were delightful. Renovations are on going and a swimming pool is planned. In one of the many reception rooms there is a DVD showing the old hotel and the ongoing improvements. The only problem I found was with the reception which is also the hotel's shop checkout so I had to wait 15 minutes in a queue of shoppers. The merchandise in the shop is full of original and fair trade products including some fabulous Native American rugs. For train buffs this hotel is a must as the hotel backs onto the Winslow train station. Also for Eagle fans Winslow is the place to be.

Room Tip: walk around the hotel and ask to see the rooms. Some overlook the garden which is lovely.

At La Posada you are staying in a "home". Yes, you have your individual room (each room is unique - no two are alike) and you have the rest of the hotel to live in. You can sit and watch the video of how it was restored; you can view all the art work throughout the rooms and halls; you can relax in the upstairs large living room; you can play a game of chess; you can sit outside with a adult beverage and watch the trains go by. There is the inner courtyard to relax in and there is the garden area. So many things to do in such a small space. La Posada has been lovingly restored and we try to stay here every chance we get (the restaurant - the Turquoise room) is exceptional.

Room Tip: We like a room facing the garden - and a "standard" room. We're not Jacuzzi fans (too...

There are several good reason to stay at La Posado if you find yourself passing through Winslow, Arizona. The restaurant is one. Wonderful food and service and a chance to watch the trains go by this historic old Hotel. The hotel is a tastefully restored Harvey Hotel which gives you a hint at times past. There is much history revealed throughout the facility. I first visited the restaurant a few years ago, shortly after the restoration and told myself, if I ever got back this way I would stay at La Posado. That opportunity occurred in July 2014. Absolutely no disappontments. Worth going out of your way to spend a night.
