This is a beautiful building, renovated to a high standard and with some obvious care taken to maintain facilities in good order - indeed in the run-up to our visit I had messages apologising for a tiny wee rip in a dining chair and an almost invisible dog-claw-scuff on a carpet, neither of which I'd've even noticed!
The main area is large and split-level, with two dining areas (we used one for eating and one for board gaming), a play area with a baby gate (though there's a dip a few inches down onto a window sill where a determined child could probably manage to hurt themselves), a kitchen easily big enough for two or three folk to move around one another, and a comfy living space with a good sized Smart TV and bluetooth enabled sound system. The house is also super warm in spite of the epically high ceilings - it has underfloor heating and in fact we turned it down even though it was cold outside.
The garden is enclosed on all sides - I'm sure true escape artist dogs could jump out easily but our three lurchers were happy to sniff about without going AWOL. It does have a steep embankment so you wouldn't want to leave little kids playing unattended.
There were six adults (three couples), three dogs and one toddler in our party, and we found the Old Kirk a great size for us - plenty of space to spread out and relax. I think another couple of people would've been fine but I dunno if I'd want to go full capacity unless it was just for a short break.
There are loads of nice walks in the area - it's a few miles to the Hermitage and it's also very close to Dunkeld where there are some lovely walks (we drove out and some of us walked all the way back one day. It was a bit snowy while we were there, but though it was a wee bit icy on the last stretch of the narrow drive to the Kirk we all made it all the way there.
As mentioned previously, Heleen was responsive and accommodating - in fact, she let us change our booking weekend after we'd made it at no extra charge (though I wouldn't try that at a busier time of year!). When the (surprisingly high speed) internet went down one evening she got back to me very quickly after I texted. (The wifi is actually a community project using radio relays (I think), which means that when the net does go down there are web-starved neighbours who'll try to fix it as soon as possible - both times it went down it was back up quite quickly! Some of us also had 4G.)
Finally, the guest handbook is written with clarity AND humour - we all enjoyed getting up to speed with the workings of the house (and were very well behaved and didn't hang off the bell pull!).
All in all, a great experience, incredibly good value, and I wouldn't hesitate to come back (except that I love trying out new places).
The Old Kirk is full of character and is a truly fabulous holiday house. The spacious property had plenty of space for a large group. A special place for a restful break.
My husband and I booked this beautifully converted chapel for our Christmas get away hoping for snow, unfortunately it snowed on our way home ! (Just our luck) The facilities we can’t fault, we love home cooking and the kitchen is fully equipped with every gadget you will possibly need in fact the knife sharpener there was so good we ordered one online for our return home. The shampoo, conditioner, shower gel miniatures are a bonus if you’ve forgotten something. The bed was comfortable though prefer feather pillows. The underfloor heating is fab (once we sorted it with help from Heleen the owner, whom is always at hand on the phone, a definite bonus she couldn’t be more helpful !) Labradors found it too hot so we put them in our truck at night to sleep though jack Russell loved it. Perthshire is beautiful and dunkeld which is less than a 10 minute drive away has the local amenities, butchers etc and has an amazing cathedral for a small town & is definitely worth a look. Would not hesitate to book this place again
Just spent a great family Hogmanay at the Old Kirk. The facilities were excellent and the weather even provided snow for sledging. The children loved playing indoors especially hide and seek. It is also in a perfect location for touring Perthshire and lovely country walks. Thanks Heleen Hope to be back.
Well resourced and well set-out accommodation, perfect for a family celebration. Dunkeld only a 10 minute drive away but we spent most of the time in and around the house. Very reasonably priced given the size and quality of the accommodation. Highly recommended.
We loved staying at the Old Kirk. We needed somewhere that wasn't too far to get to but still felt like a good break. The house was lovely, clean and cosy and there was loads of space for two families with 3 small children before us. The kids loved the play nook and the swing and climbing frame in the garden. We enjoyed a walk round the loch in Pitlochry, as well as visiting the Hermitage and when it rained we went to the Scotland hotel to swim, which the kids loved. We'd definitely recommend!
