“Outstanding in every way”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

Planned to spend 3 days in Lake Atitlan so we went to Trip Advisor and selected the Casa Palopo based on the reviews. We were initially booked into Room 5 but asked for a change when we read one review that said that there was no view from that room. They gladly changed us and we were in Room 2 which was spectacular as were ALL of the rooms in the hotel. We had to look at Room 5 which had a great view of the lake and volcano from the room which had an expansive balcony. The person who wrote the negative review did a disservice to the hotel. Everything about the hotel was wonderful including: location, service, food, etc. We stayed at the hotel for dinner every evening and had excellent meals. Prices for food and wine at the hotel were somewhat higher than in comparable restaurants in Antigua but well worth it based on the ambience. Sunsets were great as were the massages in our room.

The casa Palopo has only a few rooms and each has a superb view on the Lake Atitlan and its three volcanoes. The French managers have instilled style and sophistication into the enterprise and the restaurant with great views, lots of candle candelabras serves a menu of sophisticated, tasty food.\
The swimming pool is small but its shape allows exercise to do lengths.
At night a welcome open fire warms up the evenings which can be chilly as altitude is 1500m.

Room Tip: As far as I could figure out all rooms have a view, some may be a bit larger. Room 5 has a particula...

Our plan was to do nothing but sit and stare at the view and I think this must be the best place we could have found to do it.
The hotel is really lovely. The rooms are great, comfy beds with white sheets and duvets. Lots of colour and character. Amazing lake views from our rooms.
Also thought the food was great and not too overpriced. The terrace outside is really sweet, with lovely candles at night. The lounge also has comfy chairs and an open fire to sit in front of if the wind gets up at night.
Most people here seem to be older couples here for one or two nights doing standard lake tours. But this was also a lovely place to relax for a couple of days if you're not on the tour circuit.
Staff were lovely and all very helpful. The manager did perhaps ignore us slightly in favour of the older clientele but we didn't mind.
The view of the lake is probably the best there is for afternoon sun and amazing sun sets. Also right in front of the elephant inside boa-constrictor from le petit prince! Bit of a shame that the view from the pool is obscured. Don't miss the garden and path down to the lake which we only discovered on our last day.
Overall a really special place to stay. Loved it!

Didn't stay here but had a great dinner at restaurant. Pretty expensive for Guatemala but lives up to it with quality of food. Ate an outstanding shrimp dish wrapped in wantons with a solid reasonable bottle of wine. Awesome view and walkable for lunch from Santa Catalina if you don't mind the steep hills.

Casa Palopo is one of the nicest hotels in Atitilan. We have heard so many great things about it that we decided to stay there for a quick vacation. Once we arrived the hotel proved the best service, there was someone waiting with a refreshment and a smile. Once we checked into our room, it felt like we where given the last room in the hotel a the top of the property. The room had no privacy since you heard anyone walking near by or staying in the room above. The dining room and pool where a hike away. Very difficult to get to. Food was very pricy and not so great, and service very slow. At times we where left waiting for a simple thing like bread. If you are going to charge international prices the service should be accordingly, and we thought It was not the case.

Our stay could not have been nicer. The hotel overlooks the lake and has one of the most incredible views anywhere in the world. Think sun, volcanos, and water. The hotel is secluded but we found that to be a positive. The restaurant was wonderful so we ended up having our dinners there. At night, the hotel lights up in candles.

During the day, we hired a boat and guide to take us around the many Mayan villages surrounding the lake. Amazing that each town (some only accessible via boat) has its own unique culture. Definitely try Solola where I think 2x a week they have a local market (non-toursity). We stayed only 2 days but wished we had 1 more to hike on of the volcanos.

Room Tip: Room 1 Master Suite. Huge room with private terrace. We traveled in the off season so prices were...

We booked a dinner reservation for 5pm so that we could bring our 6 month old son with us and not interfere with later dinner reservations. We arrived and before we made it to the restaurant we were told no babies by an employee who had been told by a random guest. I understand a hotel with a no kids policy to accommodate honeymooners and couples but as a visitor to a restaurant it better be REALLY fancy to have a no baby policy. We were more annoyed at how it was handled. We were being escorted off the property before we even reached the restaurant. It would have been nice for an apology for the mix up at the time of the reservation or an offer to take food back to our villa. I don't like any place that doesn't like my family.
