“Good location, tiny room”
Reviewed 17 December 2012

We stayed in one of the Villa Janne rooms, and it was tiny. The bed was small and uncomfortable, the decoration was a random collection of cheap items that had definitely seen better days, and the bathroom was also minuscule and badly designed.

The main building is beautiful and perhaps the rooms are also nicer. We would not recommend booking Villa Janne, though.

Villa Maija is on a beautiful street very close to the beach. It is a shame our room was so uncomfortable and dated.

The place was lovely, cosy and home-like. Walking distance from all sights in Hanko.

They did not do the extra bed ordered. We noticed that in the middle of the night and complained about that during the next morning. Obviously they do not get that many complaints because they were really clumsy handling the situation and never used simple work such as "We apologize". Small manners would help them get them full rating.

When planning a first summer holiday in Finland I found it really hard to pick out hotels based on reviews and recommendations, simply because there were so few of them. It seemed relatively few non-nordic people have been to Finland, particularly outside Helsinki. This is hard to explain given it is a beautiful country with a great way of life. The language is a nightmare with signs and information being unintelligible, but the majority of Finns happily switch into English to help out.

Fortunately we had a local friend to suggest we booked ourselves into Villa Maija for the five nights we were in Hanko. Booking well in advance we reserved a large room with a balcony overlooking the front of the property. It was light and airy, immaculately clean and had an instant calming, relaxing effect on us, just perfect for unwinding on holiday. The villa is an old Russian seaside villa with considerable character (just look at the photo) set within a few hundred metres of all the main attractions in Hanko. Walk left or right from the Villa and within only 100-200 metres you can be on a beautifully clean and safe beach, or in a park or woodland and within 300-400 metres down by the marina and its row of really nice restaurants. Hanko, being the southernmost town in Finland, jutting out on a peninsula into the Baltic sea, is a marvellously sunny town, that really has that seaside holiday feeling to it.

Villa Maija is all part of that scene. It's a small hotel, clean and friendly. And it is old with character, which we liked (those who have little appreciation of what is special in life and like uniform chain type hotels will probably be disappointed). We liked the big beds, the great breakfast spread, the cleanliness, the easy parking, the friendly staff......the fact everywhere was just a short stroll away. Being Finland, of course, there was free wifi too.

As it is a small hotel with a limited number of rooms, the hotel can get booked up well in advance. Hanko does host various major events which can attract big crowds and visitors who do not always honour their bookings. As a result the hotel will ask for payment, sometimes in the form of a deposit in advance. This should not detract from booking at Villa Maija. If you make a booking you should make sure you go there! Because if you are like us you will really enjoy your Hanko seaside holiday experience, courtesy of Villa Maija!. We thoroughly recommend it and look forwrd to returning in winter!
