“Very good value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2013

Centrally located, clean, friendly hotel. Spacious room. Good bed. Working wifi. Nice breakfast.

Very good value for money in the rather expensive Finland.

Curtains could be better as Finnish summer nights are so light.

Room Tip: Get a room at the top floor to avoid hearing noise from street or night club.

Basic level hotel that is already a bit worn out. A renovation would do good. The price is cheap but do not expect too much. The reception is a combined bar and "night club". Make sure your room is not close to the bar since the music reaches some of the rooms in the night. The rooms further away are very quiet. If you are lucky, you can get a relatively big one, too. The "night club" has two different sides: the dancing floor and the karaoke bar. Live music also on some days.

A good breakfast with fresh baked bread. The hotel is centrally located. The river and the old town is at a walking distance. The river side is very beautiful and lively in the summer but in the winter time there is not much action. Make sure to walk to the old town and climb up to the church hill.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is not close to the bar since the music reaches some of the rooms in the night.

The location of this hotel is good in the centre next to the bus station and a short walk to the Old Town. However, that's probably the only good thing! This Hotel is actually a nightclub and I would not want to stay here whilst the night club is open. Breakfast was poor. When the nightclub is not open, the bar does not serve drinks and there is no restaraunt. The rooms are OK if you are just sleeping there, but they are very, very basic.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2011

My husband and I stayed one night at the Seurahovi in Porvoo in June 2011. Because many of the hotels in Porvoo are very expensive and Seurahovi's price was quite affordable compared to them, we decided to stay here.

The location is great, right next to the bus station. It's also just a short walk away from the lovely Old Town and the riverside's restaurants. There's a beautiful cafe just opposite at the other side of the square and even the theater is nearby.

But that's all this hotel has going for it. When you walk in, you will be greeted by a sight that is more suited for a nightclub than a hotel. But guess what, it doubles as the entrance to the nightclub which opens in the evenings! You have to walk up stairs, I did not see a lift anywhere and people were struggling to get their strollers and suitcases up the staircase.

At the top of the stairs you will find the reception. And you'll notice from all the bottles and the decor that the reception also works as a bar in the evenings! The whole area is black and decorated in a nightclubby way. You can find your way to your room by following black signs with red letters saying ROOMS - sort of reminds you of a bordel. You can take the lift up to you room from the reception after walking through a long corridor.

They do not have key cards, instead you will use an oldfashioned key to open (and remember to lock!) your room. The decor in the room was ok, but the tables and chairs were ancient and really run down. There was a new plasma tv though. The room was clean and the bed was comfy enough. The bathroom had been refurbished, so that was ok too.

In the evening we went out with friends for dinner and drinks and when we came back we were greeted by a long queue of drunken 18 year olds trying to get into the nightclub!! I managed to weave us past the queue and tell the doorman that we'd like to go to sleep. He was very polite and let us in but once we got up the stairs what had been the reception in the daytime was now a disco and it was packed with people and the music was blaring (of course, since it was a nightclub now). We had to SQUEEZE into the crowd and make our way slowly to the door which led to the rooms. Quite disturbing!

As you can imagine, the noise of the music was very loud even in the room but thankfully we were so tired that we managed to sleep. It could be quite a problem for a light sleeper though.

The worst part of our stay was when we went down in the morning to the reception area where breakfast was served we were greeted with the smell of vomit! Of course it had been cleaned up after the night's partying but the smell hadn't dissapeared anywhere. The breakfast was good enought but as you can imagine it's quite unappetizing eating while smelling puke around you!! Also there are no windows in this area and it would be nice to get some light from outside, at least in the morning!

There's no real baggage storage, we were just told to leave our bag where in the cloakroom which is an open ungarded space. Thankfully our bag was still there when we arrived.

Do take the time to visit Porvoo if you are on holiday in Finland - it's the cutest town in the whole country! There are great restaurants around and it really comes alive in the summer with outdoor cafes and terraces. But do think twice about this hotel..

Room Tip: Ask to be located on the highest floor possible

Tuomas T, Guest Relations Manager at Seurahovi Hotel, responded to this review, 16 July 2013
Dear Guest,
We are sorry that Your stay with us did not meet Your expectations. Due to customer feedback we have made several improvements to our hotel:

- We have built a side entrance with a lift so guests with large suitcases or for example walking disabilities can get to our hotel more easily.
- The lighting at our lobby restaurant has been increased, so it appears less ‘nightclubby’ and dark. Color choices such as us using the red color are obviously matters of taste, and we are sorry, if our signs have somehow offended You.
- Rooms have never needed specific locking with a key, they are always locked when the door closes.
- The amount of people allowed into the lobby restaurant has been reduced, and we try to direct as many customers to the nightclub as possible, as opposed to the lobby restaurant.
- The problem with noise of the music coming from the nightclub to the rooms has mostly been solved with audio engineers and such from our partner, LiveNation.
- We are sorry that the cleaning of the breakfast room had been sub par when You stayed in our hotel. We have now made efforts to clean the breakfast area more thoroughly, and as of lately, we haven’t had complaints about the cleanliness.
- We have arranged a proper baggage storage for our guests now, with outsiders not being able to get there.

Once again, we are very sorry that You did not enjoy Your stay with us. Most of these issues were due to the reorganization of the hotel with the nightclub and the lobby restaurant being built and proper policies not being smoothed out yet. I would like to note, that the nightclub is open only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and on other days the restaurant is not open on evenings.

We hope You will try our hotel again, when You visit Porvoo next time!

Best regards,
Hotel – Restaurant Seurahovi’s staff
