“lovely Logis, food great”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

great little hotel, staff all well trained and helpful and food excellent, although pricey. The gardens down to the river really make this place and it clearly has a reputation locally for the restaurant. They are starting a full revamp, the reception is now very chic, and rooms will be next then the restaurant , and courtyard ( basically it's just the old drive at the moment!). Room 5 was nice, a little shabby (hook has come off bathroom door, no loo paper refill - aargh!) but then they are about to re-do rooms.

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the garden if in main block. the annex rooms are modern so may well be larger...

Like other reviewers, we have used L'Hermitage as a regular overnight stop for many years. It has always been a treat - both under the previous owner and her predecessors. The gardens down to the Indre, the petit-château feel of the house and the first-class food in the slightly reverential dining room have always made for the most comfortable and indulgent of stays

Last time we stayed, under the new owners, some things seemed to be changing. Prices of both rooms and menus have risen, and value for money is now questionable. The middle menu, which we usually went for, is now €35 - too much for anything but a special occasion. Our first two choices of wine from among the few more modestly-priced bottles were not available. We got no nibbles with our aperitif. And the restaurant had seriously over-booked for dinner with consequential long delays.

We assume that some of these are teething troubles. We wish the new owners well and will give L'Hermitage another chance. We very much hope it will have got back to where it used to be.

Intended to be a journey break on the way south, the stopover became memorable.

The hotel was a "mature" bourgeois house in Buzançais and has become a very charming hotel. The new owner is determined to update over time and the work so far is elegant, maybe a matter of tastes.

But when it came to dinner, "taste" became "an experience" and we ate extremely well; attentive but discreet staff enhanced the experience and the pleasant ambience of the dining room was simply a backdrop to some truly excellent food.

The meal was rounded off with some excellent Petits Fours and coffee served at the table.

Breakfast was first rate and again the owner was watchful and helpful and has an excellent sense of humour in both French and English.

It merits a return for us and a visit by the Michelin inspectors is merited on the strength of the food we ate and saw served in the dining room. Other guests, notably French, were all impressed.

Room Tip: The hotel and restaurant are closed SUNDAY evening and MONDAY as with many French establishments.

We have stayed at this hotel many times on our return from France. We love the Hotel, the food is fantastic and the staff are always attentive. Although there are new owners, we were not disappointed. It does miss Madame's presence but this would not stop us returning. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The restaurant superb with amazing food which must be experienced!

We had a wonderful experience at the restaurant. Service was great and reactive - they agreed with a smile when we asked to move our table so as to be able to have lunch with our friends who had popped in. Food was simply amazing, with unforgettable desserts. This table really deserves its Michelin guide's "Bib Gourmand" award and is not to be missed.
We were very kindly hosted at the hotel by the owners - rooms are ok, a bit old-fashioned, but very clean and quiet.

For some years, this logis has consistently been our most reliable and enjoyable pitstop on our regular journeys to and from the UK to south west France and we visit it several times a year.

But, oh dear! There have been recent changes in ownership/management since our last visit last October and after our most recent visit, we are a little nervous. The two men who have taken over were very friendly and we hate being critical but the lack of Madame's eagle eye is evident in a myriad of ways.

Firstly, and perhaps most critically, we immediately noticed that the bedroom was not in its usual immaculate condition. While superficially clean, it did not look right. The cushions on the day bed looked as if they had recently been sat on and not been plumped up in the normal welcoming fashion, the rugs on the were all askew and had not been straightened to look neat and tidy, there were dead flies on the floor (horrors!) and the floor underneath the beds was downright dirty and full of debris from previous visitors. This is something that Madame's eagle eye would NEVER have tolerated and we were not particularly amused. Oh dear.

Then the dining room. Whilest Madame's 'frilly' touches might not have been to everyone's taste, she would never have tolerated the presence of dead flowers on the table! As for the meal itself ( a high spot in the past and always worthy of its three pot status), it was not bad, merely unremarkable and nowhere near the previous standard. We had the 29 euro menu as is our wont. The veloute was pleasant enough but luke warm. Main courses - the poule was tasty and not bad but the porc was indifferent. A lump of loin of pork on the plate with one over cooked carrot, a single boiled potato and that was about that. Pudding was good - an excellent crepe souffle - but the after dinner coffee was awful- rare for France.

Finally, the new decor of the hall - formerly friendly and welcoming if traditionally unremarkable - is now dominated by a somewhat startling black perspex sculpture of a rearing bull in a newly decorated and somewhat stark black and white decor. A personal opinion but we were not entirely sure that this works with the small chateau type country house.

We wish the new management well but feel that they will need to pay more attention to detail if their 3 star rating is to be retained.

This is a lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds by the river. The room we had was pretty and very comfortable. We had a most delicious dinner in the small dining room and were made to feel very welcome. I would love to return.
