Realizing that this hotel is in Eureka Springs, AR, my friend and I had very BASIC expectations staying at this hotel. It was close to Main St. and was cheap (I guess too cheap). I've stayed in hostels in Mexico, Europe, and South America, but have never seen a completely blood stained bed in my life. Unfortunately for my friend, she didn't realize the condition of the box springs until the morning, and ANY housekeeper/hotel operator could obviously see that the box springs on this mattress should be trashed (and a crime-scene investigation launched), since the box springs were in clear view. The fact that the hotel kept the bed and still rented the room out shows a clear disregard for the condition of the hotel and future guests comfort/safety.
In a rush to get out of there, I snapped a picture of the mattress before I left, but was running late and didn't have time to confront the hotel staff. Since I would have NEVER stayed in a hotel like this had we noticed the issue sooner, I explained the incident to the staff member Eric and requested a refund of the $55 we spent on 1 night in the hotel. Eric was very rude and defensive during the conversation, and hung up on me when I called back to ask his name. Eric called me back and apologized 20 minutes later, blaming it "on the bad weather in the area" and said that Mr. Thurman would not refund $55 because I didn't address the problem on the day of my checkout, "a policy they've for years", but would give me a FREE night in his hotel... I QUICKLY declined this unsatisfactory "accommodation," and explained that I would simply share the photos online.
On the upside, our hotel had hot water... something some hostels in Mexico and South America didn't have.
