We spent a long weekend (Friday – Sunday) at the Oak Crest Cottages Treehouse complex. The treehouses are new (2007) cabins and are located just off Hwy 62 east of the 62/23 junction. Just to orient you, the “old” Oak Crest cottages are on Highway 62 west near Pivot Rock Road. The owners have obviously put a significant amount of money into the tree house site for construction and landscaping. There are nine cabins built out over a hillside, using the latest Eureka Springs trick of positioning the structures on pilings to use the steeply sloping land. The effect is novel and pleasant and certainly saves on lawn care.
Our cabin was comfortable and clean. The weather during our stay swung from one day in the low 60's to a day of 80+. The air conditioning was provided by one of the new ductless split heat pump systems and the programmable thermostat was not particularly easy to adjust for the wide swing in temperature. I understand that electronic thermostats save energy and money, but a guest shouldn't need a degree in HVAC or programming to set the room temperature.
My wife stated that she would have liked to see a bit more decoration like paintings or artificial flowers. This probably reflects the individual tastes of the property owners as we've stayed in places that were extremely busy with decorations and others that were fairly sterile like our tree house. Less “stuff” does mean less cost, less dusting, and less breakage.
We were very satisfied with our experience at Oak Crest. The thermostat issues were minor after I figured out how the system worked. Décor is admittedly a matter of taste. Overall we found the tree houses to be a good value for our money. The location is excellent, with several good restaurants within walking distance, and the Eureka Springs trolley stops close to the site for those who don't want to drive.
