If Megalo Meteora is closed this is probably the next best. Once you've seen the biggest I imagine the others, like this one, are a bit of a let-down. Same price though.

“A beautiful mystery!”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

To get to this monastery, there are many steps you need to climb but, the views along the way are breathtaking. The monastery has so much detail and everyone definitely needs to stop here!

“Hard to believe”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

The danger must have been compelling, to require the building on top of the rock spires. The climb to this monastery is worth it to see the church and its icon encrusted walls. The museum has an interesting collection of ecclesiastical items.

“For your eyes only”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

In the Meteora region, where monasteries perch on huge rocks with sheer drops all around, Varlaam is one of the more accessible with around 150 steps to climb - not as bad as it sounds!
As well as the Byzantine Church, there is a medieval enormous barrel where water was stored for centuries before a cistern was dug out and the original entry point, which was by winch up a vertical cliff in a basket. The ancient wood had burn marks where the rope must have been going at high speed. I wouldn't have liked to be in the basket on that trip! Views from the terrace are outstanding.
James Bond fans may recognise the views as it was used for some of the outside scenes of For your Eyes Only when Roger Moore climbed the cliff, using his boot straps when a villain had left him hanging from a rope like a spider (if memory serves).
