“Guesthouse: Good enough, but odd owner.”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Most of the reviews here are for their camping facilities. This review is for their guesthouse. The room was basic, but fine. The full kitchen was great to have! The one bathroom (for 3 rooms) was good enough (though the shower was quite small/tough to turn around in if you are full-sized).

Be ready for an idiosyncratic owner. He renegotiated the price after we arrived (due, he said, to a misunderstanding about whether we were renting a room, or for a specific quantity of people) - we eventually agreed to the change, in order to keep the peace. He pushed HARD to get us to pay in cash - we refused (both because of our own convenience, and because I wanted a way to get my money back if something went wrong - I didn't trust the guy).

Several times he reminded us that it is his house, not really a guesthouse (that's what a guest house is, sir!...a personal house that you rent out a few rooms in)...and several times walked through the kitchen (when we were there) and turned some or all of the lights off (to save a few pennies).

Broadly, I'd categorize him as a miser.

The location is perfect. The availability of the room was key. If you prepare yourself for some idiosyncracies, then it'll meet expectations.

If we were to return to Myvatn, we'd try to stay elsewhere, but would stay here if there weren't better options.

Room Tip: The guesthouse has one single room, one double room, one triple room.

The owner was very helpful. He has very good advice on what to do around Mayvatn area. He also sells tickets to the nearby geothermal pools at a discount. We also rented bikes for a cycle around the the lake.

Bring insect repellent and a face net. Midgets and mosquitos swarm over you in the entire lake Mayvatn area.

He also sells tickets for whale watching at a discount.

Make sure to put your sticker on your tent.

We chose this place based on it location on the lake, as we guess most others do, as there is not much else going for it.

The facilities are strange, with average shared male/female ablutions, bird poo everywhere, and lots of signs and rules including open/close times that don't make sense for reception.

The owners do come and wake people up around 12 midnight if the sticker is not shown or has blown off. One review said the owners like it nice and quite at night, but that didn't stop the owners having a loud chat outside our tent to the people next door at 12:30am, commenting how strange it was people went to bed so early as they went to bed at 2-3am (all while getting into the campers for the second night in a row about their sticker not showing). Happy for you, but be quiet and let me sleep.

Our worst camp ground in Iceland. Try the camp ground up the hill near the church, or along 848 at Daddies Pizza.

This campsite is very clean, hot showers and kitchen facilities are included. The staff is very friendly. It is located in a fantastic place- close to the lake Myvatn. A lot of places to see are reachable on foot. By the way, the owner is very strickt abot the noise at night, so it is always very calm and you canhave a good rest.

Yes, I would avoid staying here again due to the dreadful management. Yes, they come round late at night checking that you have paid and will wake you up. They are stingy bu**ers and won't even give you something to light their gas cookers with, and provide a kitchen which has no heating or lighting. The laundry is an absolute rip off and if you are a g over their 3kg max, they will happily charge you another 1200k. Yes - 1200k for a wash and another 1200k for a dry for MAX 3kg. There are so many rules you feel like you are in a concentration camp and the staff are generally miserable and don't care about trying to help you. Oh and they're one of the most expensive campsites in Iceland at 1500k pppn with the coldest welcome.

The location of the site is great, overlooking the lake and the facilities are OK but:

-the kitchen is a large permanent tent with no heating or lighting. There is one sink and two worktop hob cookers, each with 4 rings. They are gas cookers but no lighter is provided. I asked at reception if we could borrow something, but of course, they had nothing we could borrow, but conveniently, they had a lighter I could buy, which was more expensive than the lighters in the shop over the road, and half the size.
-none of the few pans provided had handles, just a removable handle which was useless. My husband spilled boiling hot water and pasta in trying to use the handle.

One plus - they will book tours for you, and some get you a discount.

I would advise you to stay somewhere else. There is another, cheaper and probably far friendlier campsite nearby.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.....

Our plan was to camp at Bjarg for two nights. We got into the camp at 10pm and went straight to reception. We found a sign in the door stating that the reception closed at 21:00 and would open again at 9:00 and that after that time we were to put up our tent and pay when reception opened.

We did this and made dinner in the kitchen tent. Finally we went to bed at 11:45 pm after long day of driving. Then an hour later we are awaken by a man shaking our tent and telling us we didn't pay. We told him that we did what his sign said, but he said we should have knocked on the door as he was there. His tone wasn't angry, just chiding, but I did not appreciate being woken up from a sound sleep when I did exactly what his sign told me to do. We handed over the cash for one night and tried to get back to bed.

We were really debating the next morning whether to move on to another campsite since it had been an unpleasant experience being awoken in the night. We decided in the end to stay since we didn't want the hassle of moving.

I dutifully paid for the second night and put the sticker on the tent next to the sticker from the first night. My friend and I joked about how no one would wake us up now.

The joke was definitely on us as sure enough the manager woke us up in the middle of the night by shaking our tent and saying we had not paid. I said, "of course, we paid- there is the sticker on the tent next to the sticker from the first night." It turns out the woman in the office messed up the date so there was 2 stickers for the same night, but given the size of the tent, it should have been clear that it was a mistake (or at least clear enough to sort it out in the morning.)

On our trip, we camped all over Iceland and the camp managers were so nice and relaxed. Usually you paid at night or settled up in the morning without a problem. It was just shocking to deal with these unpleasant people waking people up in the middle of the night instead of addressing issues in the morning.

It is too bad because there are really good points to the campsite. The location was good and the kitchen tent with the provided gas burners was great. However, those pros didn't make up for the big con of being awaken each night.

We stayed one night in a tent at this camp that is located directly on the edge of the lake. It is easy to reach and nearby you will find everything you need, supermarket, petrol station and tourist office. A great base for a visit to one of the most beautiful places in Iceland, with a large number of interest places. The campsite is very wide, divided into different areas, one dedicated to campers and different meadows for tents. There are two structures (at the two sides of the camping) for baths and showers without distinction men/women. The bathrooms have some hairdryers and there aren't electrical outlets. There is a kitchen in a marquee, a little small for the size of the camp, has only pots and pans for cooking. The camp offers a laundry service (charges apply) and there is an area to hang out the laundry. The whole area is very clean and quiet. No wi-fi connection in the camp. The view is wonderful, perfect for watching the many birds that inhabit the lake. The management offers the possibility to organize various day trips.
