Short of Iceland Ring Road trip, I can't think of a better base offering access to so many destinations in Iceland.
One day we went to Geysir, Gullfoss, and Thinglevir taking back roads offering unbelievable scenery.
Another day we went down Route 1 with stops at waterfalls, black sand beach, glaciers - all the way to Iceberg (Glacier) Lagoon, including Northern lights display over our heads on return trip.
We were lucky to have 4x4 rental car, and had fun traveling through some snowy F-roads offering unique landscapes and great views off the beaten path.
We went through shore villages, stopped at horse farms, saw many waterfalls not listed on tourist guides, but just as wonderful - you name it - and every night were woken up by front desk for Northern lights grand finale - no surprise we didn't get much sleep, and it had nothing to do with jet lag.
There were couple places we could not visit as we didn't have ice walking gear - like hot river just above Hveragerdi, but it was the result of a perfect sunny weather which came with ice crust on the slopes... Good reason to come back in summer - it would also give us a chance to visit some places closed for winter season.
The hotel itself didn't disappoint - clean, comfortable rooms and beds, great play room, the pool with hot tubs and sauna surrounded by snow! Plus, great breakfast every morning...
We didn't try the restaurant at Ork - left it for the next time.
