“Luxury showhouse accommodation!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2013

Hotel Grimsborgir is an unusual development which looks to have been a group of houses converted to holiday accommodation. The main hotel building with reception, restaurant and small bar even has the kitchen in a converted garage! That said the individual guest houses are large, comfortable and very well-equipped. Even the dining table was laid ready for entertaining - it was like a luxury show house!

We ate in the restaurant on a couple of nights and the food was excellent. Breakfast was also very good marred only by mediocre coffee out of a press button machine. Throughout our four day stay the food in Iceland was exceptionally good from the cafe at Geysir and the Cafe Paris in Reyjavik to the Fjorubordid lobster restaurant near Selfoss (despite the rather shanty town location).

All in all an enjoyable stay and a good location for sightseeing, star/northern lights gazing and day trips to Reyjavik.

From the minute we arrived, and were given an upgrade to a wonderful and brand new guest home, every aspect of Grimsborgin was simply terrific. We had originally booked the Hotel Ranga, and I'm sure it would have been great. But based on our experience at Grimsborgin, we were thrilled that Ranga had overbooked, and we were switched to the Grimsborgin..

Their restaurant was fabulous, too. And, our hosts seemed to really care that every aspect of our stay was perfect.

Four of us, 2 couples, spent 3 nights in the Grimsborgir apartments as part of a 5 day trip to Iceland. The objective was to spend 3 nights outside Reykjavik away from the light pollution to improve the chance of seeing the Lights. On arrival we were greeted by a Union Jack on the flagpole outside our rooms and instead of a 2 bedroom unit we were upgraded free of charge to one which slept 7 and had a massive lounge, fully equipped kitchen and huge bathroom. There was a hot tub outside for watching the Lights, if they arrived, and on the third night they appeared in all their splendour! The owner, Olafur, and his wife, Christina, were the absolute model of helpfulness and caring. An example was the preparing of the hot tub so it was ready when we got back from our days out so we could hop straight in. We had breakfast, packed lunch and dinner, all of which were superb. We had day trips with South Iceland Adventures which was another excellent time and added up to wonderful Icelandic friendliness and a desire to go the extra mile to ensure we had a great time.

Room Tip: Any one will do! They are all great

We had a two night stay in a lovely apartment (number nine). The apartment was well laid out and the attention to detail is second to none which makes for a particularly comfortable stay.

The breakfast was fantastic, my partner still talks about how good the quality and variety of the food was. Dinner was nice. The restaurant staff were excellent, especially the female member of staff that we met.

Some of the other guests were lovely, however our next-door neighhours spoilt our first night. I was making the most of the hot tub, which was a great treat at the end of a long day's exploring. They returned home about 9.30pm and at 10pm told me that the noise from the hot tub generator was disturbing them so I would have to turn it off. I would not have minded if they had been polite about it! My understanding is that there are no restrictions on the times that you can use the hot tub until. Anyway I cannot blame the owner for this as they have no control over the rudeness of other guests.

Neighbours aside, the hot tub was the perfect location for watching the Northern Lights.

I would definitely recommend staying here. The service is very professional and the apartments are presented at a very high standard. We loved the fact that you were away from the hustle and bustle of a built up area and if we return to iceland we would love to visit Hotel Grimsborgir Luxury Apartments again.

A car is highly recommended for exploring Iceland, and if you get a change go to Jokulsarlon. It was about a four hour drive from Hotel Grimsborgir Luxury Apartments, but definitely worth the trip.

Dear Guests,

Thank you for your review on your stay. We are glad that you enjoyed your time here. I'm sorry that there was trouble with using the hot tub. The only rules we have about using the hot tub is that it shall be turned off over the night so it doesn't disturb the guests while sleeping.
We hope you had a very good trip and hope to see you again!

Wish you all the best,
Greetings

This apartment complex had great reviews, so we booked for 2 nights during a trip to Iceland. The reviews were right. Its a fabulous place. The scenery is amazing and the apartments are really good. Comfy beds, lovely bathroom, & some apartments have their own hot tub on the patio. It would be a magical place to see the northern lights, sadly we were unlucky on this trip. We ate in the restaurant and teh food is wonderful - do try the lamb - excellent! Breakfasts were great too, and you could go back for as much as you wanted. all the staff are so friendly and helpful. It is right on the Golden Circle, so all the best sights are within driving distance.I highly recommend the Grimsborgir apartments. Thank you very much to Olafur & Kristin and all of the staff, we had a fabulous time with you.

Gorgeous cottages. Clean, modern, large cottages. We had dinner in their resturant, best food we had in iceland in our 10 days driving around the country. I had the icelandic cod, and my husband the seafood plate. The breakfast was good food also. The staff were very friendly and nice.

These accomodations are beautiful and very well-done but in the middle of nowhere. Desolate. I hate to say this but truthfully, I think most visitors will be happier staying in Reykjavic and having lots of options for tours, restaurants, shopping, etc. I wish we had.
Also, the restaurant is sorely lacking in quality and variety but is your only option if you want to eat. Schnitzel was just plain bad. Chicken sandwich and burgers were both barely grocery store frozen food quality. We started to dread dinner. Breakfast Buffet was a bit better. No lunch. No cocktails.
Lastly, some coffee, tea and sugar in the accomodations would have been nice. It's a very long drive to get these things!

Dear Guests,

Thank you for your review of your stay here with us.
Very many people come to our hotel because it is "in the middle of no where". They have never experienced it before and they like it, but of course it is not for everyone. There are lots of tour options around the hotel, and it is close to the most popular sights in Iceland, Thingvellir and Gullfoss & Geysir. But you have to be on a car to go see these things, also to go to the nearest grocery store (10 minutes drive).
I am very sorry that you didn't get what you were expecting, but I hope you had a good trip anyway.

Wish you all the best,
Greetings
