“Great Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2013

We were the only guests in this superb B&B and we had a great experience. The lady and her housband were friendly and fantastic, the breakfast was superb with homemade jam, harrings, homemade bread... Bitra is a little piece of my house in Iceland! Thanks alot for all!!!

This hotel in near Selfoss was formerly a prison and you can definitely tell if you stay here. We stayed here for one night in October 2013 and got one of the rooms at the bottom level. Room was very spacious with a nice large window. Bathroom was very basic and shower had drainage issues. Breakfast was ok. The owners were very friendly and helpful. What let this place are the rooms, they just need a bit of work.

Nice cosy B&B just outside Selfoss: around 10 minutes drive. Very friendly owners combined with a perfect breakfast with lots of Homemade stuff. Beds and sheets were comfortable although our shower was a bit poor. Nevertheless recommended stay in this area!

Have you ever spent a night in a jail cell? In Bitra, a small farm just out of Selfoss, Iceland, you get a chance to do just that. The place was built to be a women's prison, but was never used. It was for a short while a juvenile prison, but 2 years ago it was turned into a B&B by Vignir and Sigurbjörg, the owners, who will do their best to make your stay pleasant. The rooms are well equipped and spotless clean. Some have private facilities. The beds are excellent. Sitting rooms are cozy and have free wifi. And the best of all is the breakfast. With homemade smoked herring and freshly baked bread it was by far the best breakfast we had in Iceland. Highly recommended!!!

Room Tip: Try to avoid the small rooms in the basement.

We had a great stay at this bed and breakfast. It was a cold and miserable night so it was nice to come in to a warm and inviting room. Rooms were clean - and owners were friendly! They even recommended a great restaurant for my husbands birthday! Breakfast was plenty and tastes in the morning. Only thing to note is that this place is larger than expected - i think there were like 8 or 9 rooms upstairs with only one shower. And there were more rooms downstairs. That being said - it was still quiet and the washrooms were accessible whenever we needed it. The only other thing is that its 12km outside of selfoss (east) and we thought it was closer to town. Again - it didn't affect our stay because we had a rental car but be careful if you don't.
Thanks for a lovely stay!

Guesthouse Bitra is perfectly situated for outdoor adventures. It's also not so far out in the middle of nowhere that you can't go out to eat.(provided you have rented a car) We were able to start our day with an excellent breakfast spread and go hiking nearby. In the late afternoons we would come back and go eat in Selfoss or neighboring towns. It's also nice to get a good burger to go and come back and use the terrace to just sit and soak in the evening sun.The owners have a lot of excellent and helpful pamphlets from nearby eateries if you're not sure where to go.
The room was clean as were the shared bathrooms. From our room we could see Mt. Hekla and Mt. Eyjafjallajokull. The guesthouse itself is nicely decorated and has an interesting history. Another plus is that the hot water doesn't smell of sulfur like in Reykjavik but is just as clean and wonderful which is nice after a day of hiking.
We stayed three nights but we could have stayed longer. We'll be back again someday, but in the meantime, I will suggest staying here to anyone that will listen.

Room Tip: Some rooms have slanted ceiling due to being right under the roof.

lovely breakfast, rooms and sanitary facilities seemed newly refurbished, comfy beds, fast WLAN, sulfur-free hot water

Like in most Icelandic guesthouses, walls are so thin, you hear people snoring and talking, all doors open and close with a noise, when the first person in the house gets up, you are awake, too! Some guests leave a mess in the shared toilet and shower, which is hard to take for the high price you pay. Value-for-money is low compared to Central European standards.

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs seem to be a better choice.
