Stayed here for two nights as part of a Golden Circle tour. The weather was poor and our standard room had a view of the rain tumbling down on the car park. The room safe was faulty and after repeated efforts to fix it, management gave up. Annoyingly it still beeped every fifteen minutes throughout the night.
To escape our small room we headed for the bar but there were limited places to sit. All were occupied by a school group sitting and talking. We had to have our drinks in the lobby.
On the plus side, we ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was very good and the wait staff cheerful and efficient. Breakfast was good as well but quite hectic because everybody leaves at basically the same time.
There was a sulphur smell in the bathroom but I guess that is to be expected given the method used to produce the hot water.
Twin beds were comfortable enough but not overly large if you are tall.
If you stay here, try to get a room on the river side, avoid 7am breakfast if you can and arrive early to secure one of the 16 seats at the bar for a pre dinner drink.

Hi Gary M,
Thank you for taking your time to review Hotel Selfoss.
Not that it helps you now but the safe is fixed, we needed a help from the manufacture company. Thank you for your patience regarding the faulty safe.
We have had our fair share of rain this summer and we hope it will come to an end, but we have to have some water for these waterfalls.
I would like to add to your suggestions to try out or Riverside Lounge where you can also enjoy pre dinner refreshments.

Our only (minor) complaints for this hotel were 1) don't try and be courteous and hold the glass elevator doors open with your hand to delay the doors closing - they close anyway - Hubby got a serious finger nip. 2) breakfast is not served until 7:00 (and a lot of it isn't set out until 7:15 or later) so there is a serious backlog as all the tour groups are trying to eat and leave as early as possible.

The hot water did have a sulphuric smell, but it was worse in other places we stayed, and didn't bother us much. Our room did not overlook the river (too bad, I guess those rooms had a lovely view) and on the two nights we stayed there was surprisingly noisy traffic/revelry on the street outside, considering Selfoss is not a very big place.

All in all, a fine place to be home base for touring this region. We had take-out pizza for dinner one night from the Dominos next door - relatively cheap by Icelandic standards, and very good too (they had an English menu, very helpful!_

Hi debbie506,
Thank you for your review of Hotel Selfoss.
I am truly sorry for hearing about your husbands trouble with the elevator. I hope he is fine now and his injury was not a serious one.
The breakfast crew is on their toes to give good service and I am sure they will continue doing their best. I will look into what happened there.
It's not only the Domino's but also Subway and Pylsuvagninn and just down the street you can find the Hamburger Joint. All good fast food restaurants.

This might be the best hotel in Selfoss. For sure it is the best located. There are numerous small restaurants around, and some fast food places like Domino’s Pizza and Subway. A block away, past the round-about is a large supermarket.

The hotel building also has a tourist office, a gift shop and a beauty salon.

I had room 220 which was well-appointed with a nice view of the river and the bridge. It had a connecting door to the next room, so it can be part of a suite if needed. In addition to twin beds there was a large desk/work area, two side chairs and a small round table. Hangers are attached in the closet, making it a difficult to use them to dry laundry. The flat-screen TV carried both BBC and CNN as well as other channels.

There is a coffee/tea set up and lots of electrical outlets available. Lighting is excellent for reading in bed.

The only negatives (and they are small) is that the bed linens were a little “tired”. Also water had a slight sulfur smell, but this did not cling to clothes that were washed out.

This hotel is used to large groups and handles them well. Breakfast starts early and closes late. Peak time seems to be around 8am, so if you can work around this, there might not be any lines.

Staff at this hotel are particularly nice and helpful. I was especially impressed with reception who helped me out numerous times.

Room Tip: I really enjoyed the view of the river and bridge. If, by any chance, there is a school group there, ask to be put on another floor. There is nothing louder than teenagers on holiday!

We've had a truly horrible experience at Hotel Selfoss.
We stayed at the hotel for one night in mid April. Thankfully, it was just one night!

The hotel is located just by the entrance to town, near the big bridge. You cannot miss it.

Selfoss was our first stop after completing the beautiful "Golden Triangle".
We booked a Superior room and I've exchanged several emails with the hotel when I made the reservation, to have a twin bed setup. I got a confirmation that the room would be in a twin setup.

We arrived rather late, at apx. 20:30, and checked in quickly.
The entire hotel might look nice on the photos, but upon arriving, it looks totally ragged and is obviously NOT a 4-star hotel (it's more of a 2-3 star hotel, at most).

Our floor looked like a very cheap youth hostel, with numerous luggage items and shoes thrown next to the rooms. What a mess!
Our room (number 322) was not set up in a twin setup but rather in a king bed setup.
We quickly rang reception and told them about this, and the person at the reception said he would come up soon and arrange things for us.
It took him over an hour to come and re-arrange the room for us.
The tiny TV in the room had no reception at all, but the person from reception said nothing can be done about it.
The room itself was rather spacious, with a connecting door, VERY shabby beds, but a decent view to the river.

The bathroom was the tiniest we've seen in any hotel in Iceland, and there was very little space to move inside.
It included a tiny sink, which was just next to a toilet and a VERY stinky shower to match. Now, I know that some hotels in Iceland have sulfur smell from their hot water, but this hotel was over the top – the hot water smelled acidic, literally, and stunk the entire room (rotten egg style).

The walls between the rooms are horribly thin, and upon trying to go to sleep at around 11PM, we couldn't, as there was a techno party going on in the next room across the corridor.
We did not succeed in making the teenagers in the next room realize it's unacceptable to have so much noise at night, so we reported this to the reception – once, twice and thrice, during the next 90 minutes.
Absolutely NOTHING was done by the receptionist. NOTHING!
It was impossible to sleep at all, even using ear plugs – the floor was shaking due to the bass in the next room.
As we were so extremely tired and we had a very long drive the next morning, we knew we had to get a good night sleep, otherwise we won't be able to drive.
We then decided, that since the hotel literally doesn't care about our well-being, we would check-out and seek another hotel, which can accommodate us.
Unfortunately, we could not find any availabilities (the closest one was in Fludir, some 50 kilometers away) and it was after 1:00 in the morning!

The party finally died out at about 4:30AM and we managed to get a two and a half hours of sleep.
The next morning, after a quick (and below average) breakfast at the Riverside restaurant (which was included with our rate), we checked-out, not before asking the receptionist to be contacted by a manager regarding our horrible experience.

No manager contacted us and a couple of weeks later, after sending an email to Mr. Bogason, the hotel's GM, I got a very dismissive reply with a truly embarrassing "sorry".
Ever since that email, Mr. Bogason has been continually ignoring my contacts.
This horrible customer service awareness is so very NOT typical for Iceland, but regrettably, the hotel chose this approach, unwilling to confront its total failure to deliver a so-called "4-star experience".

Bottom line – if you are looking for a 2-3 star hotel to crash for the night, and you do not care about spending apx. 150 US$ (off-season) for a noisy room, stinky shower, average breakfast and a HORRIBLE staff and management, this is the place for you.
Otherwise, avoid this place like the plague!

Simple but good breakfast included. Room was clean and comfortable. We had a beautiful view of the river from our room. There is a Domino's pizza around the corner and a burger joint. A short walk away (across the street - other side of the bridge) is a BONUS grocery store. Handy. No fridge in the room. Wifi was decent.

Stayed one night only as we drove the Ring road. This was a good stop after doing the Golden Circle route.
