I needed an hotel for one night but had thought that I could book somewhere when I arrived in the area. Having tried booking agencies I found everywhere sold out within 30 miles. I started ringing hotels directly and found a friendly and helpful receptionist at the Garryvoe. They were fully booked but one or two rooms were late check ins. She gave me the names and numbers of a couple of guesthouses. However, I still wanted the bar facilities of an hotel and decided to risk driving to this hotel based upon her helpfulness on the phone. This was a good decision as after a few minutes at reception when she scoured her system she found a no show. Room for the night at a good rate in a very fine four star hotel, friendly staff throughout and my breakfast was full service, no fast food buffet approach. The Garryvoe should be on everyone's list for the East Cork area.

Stayed here this week with my husband and our little girl who is one. First impressions when we got to reception were good. Both receptionists were welcoming and helpful. Were checked in very quickly and they explained meal times, where everything was etc. Our room was big and spacious and when booking I had requested a cot and also a fridge so I could take my babies food with me as she has allergies and it is easier that way. Both were set up in the room for us. We ate lunch in the bar the day we arrived and my husband and I shared a wrap. It was tasty and good value for money. We used the pool that afternoon and the girl in the leisure club was very friendly. The pool was clean and the water was warm. My husband manages a leisure center in a hotel and he really liked this one. We ate in the dinning room the night we arrived as it was part of the deal. They were very child friendly which put us at ease. Service in here was very good, staff were friendly and attentive. I had crab salad to start which was very tasty, my husband had scallops and they were cooked very well. He then had cod which he said was very nice and I had lobster. The Lobster was good however it was not a big portion and I know had it of been my husband who had ordered it he would have been disappointed with the size. We enjoyed our meal in the restaurant and took our bottle of wine back to the room with us so we could put the baby to bed. The room had a small balcony and so we could sit out while the baby was sleeping. This was especially helpful as the weather was great. Day 1 success! day two we had breakfast in the dinning room and it was fine. I had fruit and yogurt, and poached eggs my husband had the full breakfast. The breakfast staff again were great and friendly. From what I saw of the continental breakfast selection it didn't include a lot of cheese's or cold meats you might see at other hotels, mostly breads, cereals so if you were into that you might be a little disappointed. For us however it was fine. We organised to visit Fota Wildlife park that day through the hotel, who gave us a letter that we just needed to hand in at the gate of the park for entry. The cost of Fota Wildlife was then added to our bill along with a 10% discount...... We thought this was a great service. Very helpful. When we arrived back on Thursday evening we noticed that there was a wedding in the hotel, however we only saw one or two guests around reception. We again used the leisure center and this time decided to eat in the bar. It was approx 7pm when we arrived and it was quite busy however we were given a seat right away and were served by a lovely lady called Mary. Five stars for Mary she really was great. My husband ordered fish and chips and I ordered the fish platter. The fish platter gave two options, medium or large. I ordered the large as I had asked for it without prawn or calamari. Both dishes arrived and my husbands was huge, two large pieces of fish, very impressive, mine on the other hand....... a couple of slices of smoked salmon, three crab claws, and 4 small sole goujons, this cost over €16! It was very disappointing. My husband however believed that because I had asked for no prawn and no calamari that I would be charged for the medium portion...... No charged for a large! Not worth it! Smoked salmon was nothing special, the crab claws were dressed in some sort of sauce.....totally unnecessary and the sole goujons were a little tasteless. Now I would normally speak up there and then if I am not happy however our little girl wanted her bed and I left quickly allowing my husband to settle the bill. Overpriced for what I got! Having gotten back to our room it was then very clear where the wedding party was...... Under our bedroom. We were on the 4th floor and the noise was ridiculous. The wedding guests were gathered outside under our balcony smoking, drinking laughing as wedding guests do. It only took about 30 mins to wake our child. Another 45 mins to get her back asleep and then another hour to wake her again to the sound of the music from downstairs! The only way to dull the noise was to close the door to the balcony as there were no windows in the room. This was one of the hottest days of the year and the room was so uncomfortable with the door closed we could not sleep. I called reception and asked could we have a fan and although the girl was friendly she said they didn't have any left. When I explained the situation she had housekeeping organise to bring us a fan. Although this was a little helpful it was in no way a solution as the room was still very warm. Sleeping that night was impossible! The next morning I spoke with the same receptionist who I had organised the fan and she said that it was an unusually loud band and that normally you wouldn't hear anything in those rooms. Again when checking out another receptionist said that, that never happened and it must have been just that band. However I got the impression from both that they may say that a little too often. When I started writing this review I saw a review from someone else saying that they too stayed a few weeks ago and were in the same situation with a wedding happening while they stayed on the third floor. Having worked in a hotel myself, my husband being a manager in a hotel, my sister and her husband former managers in a hotel and a friend being a general manager of a hotel currently...... we have all concluded that this should not happen frequently! If it was a case that a family needed to be roomed above a wedding party then the very least that should happen is for the guests to be informed that there may be noise! We had a lovely time our first night and day and it is disappointing that Thursday was such a flop! I would like to return again however I would only be going early week so to avoid the later week weddings! I gave the hotel a "very good" because I feel it would be unfair to give "average" since we did have a nice time for half the stay!

Dear Nearly There 2012
Many thanks for your recent review and your kind and constructive words about our food and service. I am very disappointed to hear of your experience the second night of your stay. I certainly do take on board the comments you make in relation to the noise from the wedding that was taking place. I have met with our front office manager and we will certainly review the positioning of our leisure guests re room allocation when we have a wedding on in the hotel. Sincere apologies for the inconvenience
Kind regards
Stephen

I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay. A family package, we got B&Bs, dinner two nights and passes to fota, titanic in Cobh, trabalgan, jungle play centre in Midleton... Couple that with all that East Cork has to offer, the Garryvoe hotel & the beach were just incredible. Our kids did a little disappearing act on one of the days and the staff were brilliant. We will be back.

This hotel is built around the fabulous views of the beach and sea. There are so many lovely places to relax in the hotel and enjoy the views of the sea. It is worth paying the extra supplement to have a sea view room. Ours had French doors that opened unto a balcony. Food in their restaurant was delicious. Wonderful swimming pool with separate 25 metre swimming lane pool and unique jogging pool. Definitely returning here

We cannot fault the hotel staff in the Garryvoe Hotel. They were courteous, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. However, we were not entirely happy with the food situation. The main restaurant was ok, the evening meal was good, but a great pity the menu on the three nights never changed. The restaurant is airless and stuffy. Lovely views, it was very hot and no windows open. They may have had the air con on, but we don't think so. You are able to eat in the Bistro, but if you want a relaxing meal, then forget it. There are two camp sites, one on each side of the hotel and everyone piles in to eat. McDonalds would have been better. We ordered room service one evening, because we didn't want to pay 40+ euros each in the restaurant, and we couldn't get a table in the Bistro. Shame really as this could be a great Hotel. The room was fine, clean, and plenty of room. Bathroom was also fine. On the whole the visit was not too bad, we think that 4 stars in Ireland may be equivalent to our 3 star Hotels. It definitely didn't feel like a four star Hotel. Manger - please note. On approaching Hotel the Gardens need weeding, the outside at the front is quite untidy, and it doesn't give a good first impression
