We booked several months ago at the Sandhouse, and had a thoroughly excellent experience. First of all, the hotel's motif is to look like a Victorian era resort hotel, and I loved the architecture, the bar area, the myriad staircases and hallways and the restaurants. Our room faced the ocean, with one of the best views I have ever had from a hotel room. The room was very large, the furnishings were "fussy" Victorian designs, but were not at all shopworn. We had a new TV and an excellent bathroom.
It was a windy, rainy night, so we decided to eat at the hotel. The dining room is a glass conservatory style room on the 1 floor (second level) right above the beach....again, a stunning view. We both ordered the crabmeat timbal, and both of us thought it was excellent. Lots of sweet, fresh crabmeat. For dinner we both ordered the steak with peppercorn sauce. It was perfectly cooked rare as we asked for, and came with sides of mashed potatoes and mixed steamed vegetables. Loved the peppercorn sauce. For dessert we split an order of profiteroles.
The bed was a little firm for my taste, but the shower was excellent, with big fluffy towels.
In the morning we went back to the same beautiful room. There were 5 juices and a couple of fruit choices, plus an Irish breakfast, an omelet choice, and three fish choices....smoked kippers, smoked salmon and grilled plaice. My wife had scrambled eggs and the salmon, and I had scrambled eggs and the plaice. The breakfast was wonderful.
I found out that the Sandhouse had gone bankrupt and was sold to the current owned in 2012. He is upgrading as fast as he can.....lots of recent painting, new TV's obvious work of the bathrooms, new chef and menu, etc.
Don't stay here to help out the new owner....stay here because it is a really neat place with a fabulous location and wonderful food....
