“Great Weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2013

Stayed in the Moycarn recently for 3 nights with the Hubby, we had a brilliant time. Rooms were spotless clean and we had a great view of the lake from the balconey. Food was lovely and very reasonable, breakfast was really good. The Staff in the Moycarn were fantastic especially Pamela who could'nt do enough for us. Will defenitly be back.

We stayed here using our groupon deal and I must say I do not know what all the bad reviews are about clearly u thought u had booked a five star break instead of a 129 euro groupon deal!!! What we got was a beautiful suite overlooking the river, very clean, all the facilities worked perfectly and there were extra pillows in our room which we didn't have to ask for! The bed was one of the most comfortable that we've slept on. I'm a light sleeper and there wasn't a noise all night, you can't hear the motorway at all despite earlier reviews! We had out dinner there which wasnt Michelin starred but it was freshly cooked and exactly what we asked for. Tracy was great, really welcoming, very professional and just an all round lovely girl, thank u for making us feel at home. David the proprieter, when we got chatting at breakfast, told us of his prior experience in the industry at his disappointment on reading the poor reviews, I hope that anyone reading this will decide to go and pay a visit to this cosy, well run lodge and I hope that u too will find it one of the most relaxing stays u have ever had. Ps ballinasloe isn't the most exciting place but this lodge is in a great spot to go out on day trips from.

We have just arrived home from a lovely 3 nights in this hotel, myself my husband our 3 year old daughter and 2 grandparents. It was the most relaxing friendly hotel experience we've ever had. The rooms were lovely and spacious, we had a view of the Lough which was lovely. Although the weather wasn't great the staff at the hotel were more than accomodating when it came to our 3 year old bringing her toys/DVD players everywhere and even gave her colours/ colouring books when she looked a bit bored. The food was gorgeous all freshly made and very reasonably priced. The best part of our trip was the service very friendly very efficient especially Tracy and david they really could not have done any more to make us feel any more comfortable and relaxed.... Would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a relaxing few days away we will defiantly be back

My husband and i were bought this trip as a wedding present and were very excited to get away. walking into the hotel is where our excitement ended.
There was one member of staff on when we went to check in who barely uttered a hello. we went up to our room which was small but fine apart from the smell. i cant explain what it smelt of but it was really bad. after half an hour we had to go down and request they swap rooms for us which they did. the room we were given was next door and alot smaller and still smelt but not as bad. the hallway to our room smelt of deep fat fryer all the time we where there.
Dinner in the Moycarn was just awful so awful it made us laugh, the starter was ok but how wrong can you get chicken wings. the main on the other hand was inedible i had carbonara which tasted like flour and my husband had Cesar salad which was made with white cabbage and packet strip chicken. i couldn't complain as we still had 2 days there and i thought they might spit in my breakfast or something so we put it in napkins and hid it in the bin. childish but very very funny. the next morning i actually put as my facebook status how wrong can you get a continental breakfast thinking they couldn't get it too wrong. stale scones and stale bread with warm yogurts and out of date cereal was what was offered.
the next morning we went down for breakfast just to see if it could make us laugh more and it was like a different hotel. there was a very lovely girl working and there were fresh croissants and fresh cut fruit and we were offered toast and tea it was just lovely unfortunately that only lasted the 1 morning as our last morning there we got the day before's leftovers which had gone stale.
i will admit we didn't complain but that is because we never saw a management type figure around and thought we didn't pay for it ourselves so we weren't loosing anything.

Oh yes and the rooms were roasting hot with no fan or aircon and the paint was peeling off the walls and cracks everywhere. paper thin walls so we could hear everything in the room next to us....EVERYTHING :) and doors that aren't hung properly so the bang when the wind blowsThey bang constantly which kept us up one night

The view was nice but that was about it for the Moycarn. there was nothing to do there at all

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel

We (4) stayed midweek two nights b/b and evening dinner with Groupon.....

Where to start...??
Good points...Lovely location...friendly female staff..ample parking..
Thats it i'm afraid..

Bad points..
Room....smallest room i've ever stayed in,un-bearably hot, unable to leave door open at night because of nearby factory and M6..also no privacy dividers on balcony so the very heavy curtains must remain closed and the window just was not sufficient....
No milk in room on arrival..had to go down to a frequeltly empty reception..
No extra pillows..(2 only)...another trip...
Sockets only on one side of bed only..so everything had to be plugged-unplugged to use....
Tea making tray on desk unit..but nearest socket was at the door..so we had to put the kettle on the floor to boil it...weird..!!!
Stains on the carpet and walls made the room look unkept...
cobwebs and spiders around the ceiling......
The noise from the adjoining and above rooms was totally unacceptable ..people (on both nights) arriving home at 3.30am banging doors and being generally loud disrupted our sleep and left two very tired and annoyed guests ...I cant totally blame them as the insulation in the lodge is non-existant...
En-suite..
The weirdest part of our stay was that the managment decided that it was acceptable to rent this room with clearly defective shower door, which if not closed carefully and exactly would cause the shower door to come off its track and fall into the enclosure...
As a result of the defective runners the doors didnt close together properly..water on the floor was a regular occurence after a shower...
If this door was to fall and injure someone there might not be a Moycarn lodge in a year...
This didnt happen overnight....being in the trade I know that €50 would pay for this to be rectified and its not something that the cleaners/owners would not be aware of...
And while the plumber is there they might get him to look at the leaking soil pipe at the back of the toilet..which is a health hazard and again would be easily noticed by the cleaners when cleaning the floor..which it clearly hasnt been in a while, judging by the stain on the tile directly below...BTW...i dont need my toilet roll end folded into a V...theres more important issues in there.......!!!
Food.....
Adequate.......We were aware that we were being given a "deal" menu , and the quality of the food lived up to this....especially my supplemented steak.....a bit sad really....
The restaurant area of the bar (the restaurant was not open) was totally without athmosphere, we felt while having dinner and drinks afterwards that we could be sitting in a motorway services...nothing that dimming the lights and a few candles wouldnt sort out though.....

Breakfast was better but there seemed to be a choice of "full Irish breakfasts" that we were not aware of....the people on the next table asked for the same as us but got different items....swings and roundabouts i suppose...First morning we had a good spread of the usual continental stuff, but on day two we had no croissants, pan au cholocate and a big bowl of fresh fruit was missing..when enquired to the assistant was told theres none left ..it was 8.45...breakfast finished at 10, and ther was only a handful of people staying.....??????.

Overall it was a very bad stay....i feel sorry for the girls who seem to be running everything....
We met a chap at the dinner and breakfast ,but he didnt seem too keen to interact with us and came across as a tiny big ignorant and unfriendly.....sorry , i say what i see....
Our friends had a larger room and a working shower door, but still complained of the stuffy room and noise problems....
I did not make any complaints to the girl on leaving as i felt it would be a waste of time...I'm confident that the owner is aware of the problems.....

I could not and would not recommend a stay at Moycarn Lodge for all the above reasons...If however the owners decide to make right all the above issues i might change my mind, as i said earlier ,its in a very nice spot .......

One last thing..we have stayed in several "deal" hotels this year but Moycarn Lodge is the first one where we really felt like we were given a lower level of accomodation for the money....

Room Tip: top floor rooms might be the quietest..but could also be too hot in summer....

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 3 days and only wish it could have been more as it was so relaxing and pleasent to be a guest of this very well run hotel and the oweners and staff were always ready available to assist with any enquiry or information required. Some of the local residents visit the hotel in the evenings and are as warm and as friendly as the oweners and staff here. Our bed room was on the top floor of the hotel with a fantastic view of the Marina.
Food was excellent and very reasonable priced. About a 15 minute walk into the town of Ballinasloe.I would certainly recommend this warm and friendly hotel to anyone looking for Quality and Value and I hope I can get back there again for a stay.
