A must visit. The staff are so friendly, interesting and child friendly. The kitchen garden is stunning. A beautiful and tranquil place with such an variety of fruit, vegetables, plants, trees and herbs. If you like gardening its definately worth visiting. The castle and the grounds are so beautifully maintained. Have to say the highlight for our girls was the was the quiz, the kids really enjoyed it. It made the visit truly engaging.

“Impressive restoration in progress”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014 via mobile

Restoration work in progress and an immense difference has been made to the once derelict and abandoned castle and its environs. Exhibits were informative but more life and warmth required to bring this castle alive and to share its wonderful history with today's visitors. The kitchen garden was very impressive.

“Interesting but only if you have time on your hands...”

'Nice' gardens and the shell of a once glorious family mansion ! Story boards tell of the history of the place and there is a short DVD.

“A very interesting visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2013

A visit to Portumna Castle is a must for anyone visiting this area. Although we missed the guided tour, the receptionist gave us lots of information about the previous occupants of the castle and showed us photos. As the day was showery, umbrellas were provided for the walk up to the castle. Inside the castle, you step back in time and can read its history from well written information panels. You come away wanting to read more about the lives of those who lived here. The walled garden is well worth a visit and there are many quiet little corners to sit and enjoy the lovely garden and the birdsong.
