“Beautiful setting, excellent service and delicious food”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We spent two night in the Cliff House as part of a longer holiday, overall we enjoyed our stay but there were some points which we were disappointed with:

Rooms: we stayed in the deluxe balcony room, decor was beautiful and bathroom was really nice with roll top bath. Views were excellent and did not disappoint. We did find room a bit on the small side given the price tag. There was limited room for our two bags and meant having rearrange furniture to fit them in. I will say they were big bags as we were away for a week rather than weekend but this was the only hotel on our trip where this was an issue. Wardrobe storage was limited also.

Staff: Staff were very friendly and helpful, service could not be flawed and 5stars were merited on this front.

Food: food again was fantastic, despite my wife being an extremely fussy eater the staff were very accommodating and we both really enjoyed our meals. Would definitely eat here again if in the area.

Spa and leisure facilities:

Pool area was really nice, benefitting from sea views like many parts of hotel. The fitness room was tiny, had only three pieces of equipment and one weights rack that can only be used by one person. 2-3 people would be the capacity in this small windowless room which was a disappointment for us.

We both had treatments in the spa, I would give it an average rating. Highlight was the relaxation room which shares the beautiful views provided by this hotel setting.

We has a really enjoyable and relaxing stay at the Cliff House. Views are terrific and quality of rooms are top class. After a slight mix up being brought to the wrong room which was swiftly sorted by the charming reception lady, we settled into our suite. Excellent design with the sitting and dining room separated nicely. Super comfy armchairs with foot rests. The food - well, while it might surprise some people given the reviews, I was a little disappointed that the selection of mains was very 'plain'. Chicken, fillet steak, fish. I would have expected something a little more different - even something with duck or wild game would have been nice. To be fair, reading a book on the Cliff House restaurant by the owners the following day, I got a better understanding. The restaurant customer base seems to be largely local. So the customer wants to see fillet rather than a cut of meat that may taste a lot nicer when cooked properly. The book mentions they have tried a lot of more unusual options but the market was not there. Well, I had the steak. It was fine. A bit overcooked for a medium order. But again, to be fair, everyone has their own option of what is rare, medium and well. Next time I would go for rare. The desert was exceptional - best my wife and I have ever had anywhere. The after dinner digestif list was a little lacking. Then again, perhaps they don't get asked for Poire Wiliam or similar too often. The lovely wine waiter did manage to drum up a tasty calvados. This seemed the only option apart from the more usual spirits. Sitting outside on the superb deck the following day with a locally brewed craft beer overlooking the bay, you really have to say it is one of the nicest spots you can find. Made all the better if the day is cool as you can ask for a nice warm blanket for your legs.
The leisure center is very good. Fine pool. Dont expect a gym though. Anyway why would you need one with the beautiful walks around the area. There is a bike, treadmill and cross trainer in a small inside room. But why walk on a treadmill in a small room when you can do a cliff walk! Outside Jacuzzi was nice. Took me a while to figure out how to turn it on. Hint: on switch is inside the door before you go out, not at the side of tub.
The hotel also has an interesting golf option that you see on cruiseliners. Golf balls filled with fish food that you drive into the sea. Advice to hotel - get a left handed club or two. There were none there. Not that i minded. But if Phil Mickelson calls in to stay, might be handy to have one :).
We will most certainly come back. It was a top class experience overall.

Room Tip: If your budget allows, and you are there on a special occasion, go for a suite rather than a regular...

Our recent three night break at The Cliff House coincided with a spell of lovely warm weather in this quiet corner of Ireland. The sunny south east lived up to its reputation and the daily sunshine enhanced the wonderful views from every vista of the hotel. What a treat we had, from impeccable and friendly service of every member of staff, with nothing too much trouble. We have dined in many leading restaurants across the UK but the Tasting menu at The House restaurant will remain long in our memory for quality of food accompanied by spectacular presentation.

The bedrooms were lovely and quiet, in fact, I had some of my best nights sleep in the comfortable
rooms. We are already planning our return trip and wish to thank Adriaan and his team for making our stay so memorable.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views!

Such an amazing location and setting, excellent and friendly staff and the sun shining made all the difference. We had the tasting menu and wines to match. The attention to detail with each plate was outstanding. My only complaint would be that the wine servings were mean (might say more about me ;)) but for €50 for 5 small glasses I felt it wasn't good value and as there are more than 5 courses there were a few courses where we had no wine (we actually ordered an extra glass for one). Overall a very special place though.

This hotel is great! Amazing rooms, great restaurant and nice views, of course, of the ocean.

I happened to be here with a friend and it's almost a bit odd - such a nice, luxurious hotel in what seems like a small old town at the end of a dirt road.

Seems like a great place for a weekend mini vacation, just to relax and get away from it all...
