Travelled on a Travelzoo deal with Fleetway travel (as did everybody else it seems!) which included free high tea and lunch (upgraded to dinner) in their Michelin star restaurant. We drove from Porto (Sado rent a car, Audi A1 for 3 days for £45. Recommend!!), nice easy drive and into the valet parking outside reception ( quite tight turn into the entrance, easy to miss). All of the front of house staff are excellent, welcoming, helpful and friendly. The restaurant is excellent and the hotel facilities are good, games room, swimming pool etc). Amarante is a quiet town on the river and a useful base for travelling through the Douro valley.
For the price we paid, the quality of the trip was remarkable and certainly worth twice the money. The hotel restaurant is clearly the best in Amarante but can recommend Faustino as very good quality for reasonable cost. For something a little "earthier" try Adego Kilowatt, a narrow stone lined establishment selling hams, port and beer! Lamego is a good day trip to see the monastery but a very tiring hike on a hot day.More
