Description: Located in a former distillery and inserted into the surrounding space of the Quinta da Pena, in Vila Caiz - Amarante, the "Pena - Restaurant & Bar" results from the rehabilitation of a historic space with a contemporary language. In a familiar environment, the space is divided between the living room set in the very mill, the bar-cellar suitable for a winter afternoon by the fireplace and a large terrace that invites you to taste the house cocktails or dinner on the patio and under a candlelight on the hot summer nights. The gastronomy of the house will take you to the flavors so characteristic of our region, coupled with its outstanding creativity. In a refined place in its rusticity, the customer finds the flavors of the house and the region and also enjoys the tranquility reflected by the surrounding space consisting of the manor house and its gardens, the woods and several secular acre farms. More than just a meal, we want you to live a unique moment. Make yourself at home ...

“Best in area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2014

This is a beautiful modern restaurant with good varied menu. Very comfortable with log fire. Our favourite dishes were the Beef Wellington and the beef carpaccio. Wines were excellent and food and wine very reasonably priced.
A bit hard to find, but definitely worth the effort.

“The poetry of taste”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

Pena restaurant is definitely a poetic place to experience, the restaurant himself has an environment so captivating that you almost have the need to dissolve yourself in a silence hite cloud and lose your senses between the striking vision of landscape that the horizontal windows give you.
The food is simply amazing, tasteful, full of sensitivity... desserts are amazing ;)

“Pleasant Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2013

We visited this restaurant during our stay at the Casa Calcada which was a pleasant experience. The food was well presented and interesting although some of the most delicious sounding dishes had to be ordered in advance and were for a party of people. Our main courses were spoilt by the meat being over salted but the desserts were especially good.
It was a Wednesday night and very quiet which caused the waiter to be over attentive constantly pouring wine and water to fill his time. His English was very good and we reached agreement on the amount of pouring.
The value was reasonable although when you factor in thirty euros for a taxi from Amarante we would rather have eaten at the restaurant at the hotel which was excellent.

“Lightening strikes twice !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2013 via mobile

I reviewed this restaurant recently. Thinking it must be a dream and it couldn't have been as good as I wrote we returned tonight we some discerning Portuguese guests. It was FANTASTIC! If I can say it's SO GOOD if was great to be back. If you are within distance of going there it is a MUST. The wines were excellent and different to the other local restaurants. Don't think twice go there!

“In the words of Tina Turner 'Simply the Best'”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2013

Having lived in Amarante 5 years it was a DELIGHT to have discovered this restaurant last night. Not the easiest place to find, but I can tell you that now having been there I would have climbed Everest to eat there! Classy restaurant with both dining inside and outside. We dined outside and had a pre dinner drink on the terrace. The menu, although small was different and slightly international from the usual Portuguese dishes and broke the mould of all the other local restaurants. I had a chicken Caesar salad followed by Beef Wellington. Perfectly cooked and very tasty. The inside of the restaurant is stylish and not typical Portuguese. Good wine list but you can also take your own wine for 7 euros corkage. For those with a sweet tooth, the desserts are inventive. Very busy and appeared to be favoured by the young and trendy. We WILL be regulars here and recommend it whenever we can. Our young waiter Rui was well trained, spoke good English and attentive at the right level.
