“Good choice and value in Nazare - rooftop pool and terrace”
Reviewed 28 September 2011

Based on reviews here, we asked for and received double rooms on the 5th floor with balconies, facing the beach. They're actually rooms on the side with quite large balconies, each with a table and two chairs that could have fit an additional table and chairs. From the balcony, you see towards the beach. Apparently only the suites are on the beach-facing side below the rooftop pool. The rooftop pool and terrace have sweeping views over the sea and of Sitio, the town above Nazare. Desk staff all speak English and are pleasant.

The rooms are modern and spare, but very comfortable and clean. The breakfast buffet is good (bus tours stop here and fill the breakfast room from 8:30 to 9:00, though we had no trouble finding seats, and the buffet was well-stocked when we ate at 8:30).). The pool is small and glass-covered and well-heated. The small hot tub was not too clean-looking, though they were cleaning it our 2nd night there. The terrace views are great at night, and there was seldom anyone else there when we used it - bring your own snacks - no bar on the terrace).

The hotel is 2 or 3 blocks from the beach. There are scads of restaurants and cafes. Nazare is nice for wandering about - there's a large town market across from the hotel. We never heard noise from other rooms, nor had to wait for an elevator despite the tour groups - a very pleasant experience.

I'd definitely recommend this hotel as a good value, comfortable, clean choice for Nazare.

Room Tip: Ask for a 5th floor room with balcony facing the beach. This is one of the taller buildings in town...

Well situated in the centre of Nazare, not too far from bus stop and close to beach. Clean and modern but breakfasts nothing to get excited about. Looks like the most well looked after place in town. Construction around it still progressing but the noise stops well before it gets annoying

Service was friendly. Thre's no room showing or luggage service.
The room was spacious and a nice view (not to the beach, but just as well).
The location is excellent and underground parking valuable.
Buffet breakfast is good: ioghurt, 2-3 kinds of bread, 2 kinds of cake, sliced ham and cheese, 2-3 kinds of cereals, scrambled eggs, fried bacon and sausages, fruit, milk, coffee, orange juice, butter and honey.
The roof facilities (swimming pool, jacuzzi and sun bathing chairs) have an excelent view and are very pleasant, but could use somre regular cleaning (the was sand on the bottom of both pools). We didn't use the training room.
For a 4 star hotel one doesn´t expect the fair price, but one would expect a more elaborate breakfast, with more variety and quality products.
For a 4 star hotel one wouldn't expect personnell to be vacuum cleaning the breakfast room during serving ours.
For a 4 star hotel... For a 3 star hotel one wouldn't expect threading and torn bath towels.
All in all a great value for money, though not up to the 4 star rating standard.

Having read previous reviews on the Hotel Praia, I was expecting the worst. However I was very much pleasantly surprised. The Hotel Praia has been given a makeover! Given we were a large group of 90 people, check in was organised and very speedy, my husband and I were in our rooms within 10 minutes. We were given a room facing the main road, and we did have a sea view, to our right side.. We did not have a table and chair on our balcony, so I called reception, and our table and chairs were delivered almost immediately. The room and the entire Hotel was sparkling clean and nothing was too much trouble. That evening we had a group Gala dinner and the food and service could not be faulted. I was given the vegetarian meal that I had pre-ordered and the staff were attentive but not obtrusive. Our buffet style breakfast gave extensive choice including a full English fry up.The area is very beautiful and quiet during the winter months and I am told the Town booms during the summer season, so early booking recommended. Catch the Chocolate Festival in Obidos during March, and a visit to the massive underground caverns called Grutas de Mira de Aire, an hour from Lisbon, is essential. The sparkling clean pool is covered in winter and open in summer, and an excellent gym, with view of the old Town and Beach. The local ladies still wear the traditional costume of dirndl skirt and brightly patterned knee socks. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Will definitely go back to this Hotel

Room Tip: None are sea facing, but ask for a pool view wheb.

I know this hotel for years. We were very surprised to know it had been completely renewed recently (a couple of years?) and decided to go there for a couple of days. Value for the money is great, but then it was january too -- just dont count on me to be near the seashore in summer! The renewing was indeed quite sucessful, although you won't have any meal during, at least, the low season. Which is good, as you have plenty of restos around, which you should try. Rooms are larger than usual, and you can have a desk to write. We felt so comfortable we simply didn't leave the room but to eat, which is unusual. Some personnel can feel superior, but that's not the rule. The free, large underground parking is definitely a major decision factor. It's ridiculous to have reservations, and get at the hotel only to know you can't park 500 m around. Couldn't be more central, and 100 m from the beach.

Now if you travel in Europe at 4 star hotels you may be critical of this hotel, BUT if you travel in B & B's, or 2 stars like budget minded retired travelers like us, then this is a slice of heaven. We thought we were over the top at this place when we paid Seventy Bucks CAD for a room. Clean, comfy and roomy with many modern conveniences, PLUS scrambled eggs & bacon in the included breakfast buffet! We had twin rooms with a view of Sitio and the beach and room to stretch out in. Off seasons rates were excellent and while the staff could have been a touch friendlier, they were fine. If you are here in the shoudler/off season, check it out, highly recommend it. We visited 7 cities in Portugal over a 3 week period and this was definitely one of our favourites! Lisbon was tops.
